Good morning, all! One more day off for me thanks to MLK day. I've done all my running around for the weekend but have a long list of things I'd like to get done here at the house. Good news is that means I won't be sitting around thinking about food!
Lucy - so sorry to hear about your FIL. We lost my husband's dad 10 years ago in a pretty similar way and I know it's hard, even if everyone felt they were prepared. You just never are. My prayers are with you and your husband's family.
Lin - I signed up for the walk across America and logged a couple of miles last night on the treadmill (who is it here that calls it the "dreadmill:"? So funny). Anyway, thanks for the info on the site. Not sure how the "partner' part of this works quite yet but my email inbox is full of messages telling me that people have added me.
Renny - thanks for sharing what was in your heart yesterday. I'm lucky to still have both of my parents but they are 1,000 miles away so I appreciate the time that I do get to spend with them.
Michele - here's the link to the spinach and kale turnovers. They were really pretty good but a little more labor-intensive than I like my dishes to be. That's one of the things I am working on, though. Now that both of my very active girls are off to college, I'm trying to push myself in different ways, including trying new things and making dishes more from scratch and less from a box. For many years, we have been just go,go,go and had become kind of a Hamburger Helper family but those days are hopefully gone. :bigsmile: I just finished my breakfast (an Isagenix chocolate shake with almond/coconut milk), I've logged my walks from yesterday on walk across America and two threads on MFP,, the dogs have each had their short "business" walk, and now I'm planning to bundle up extra because the temperature is below freezing, grab my flashlight because it's dark and foggy and head off for about two hours with the dogs......they don't mind that we walked the same roads and trails yesterday and I don't mind that I listened to the same music on my mp3 player yesterday......Jake is still asleep, but when I get home he'll have a cup of tea made for me and we'll plan our day.....life doesn't get any better than this:bigsmile:0

Lucy- So sorry to hear about your FIL. I still miss my FIL. He passes away aver 30 years ago, but was a special person.
Barbie- Your day does sound wonderful. I get a strong sense of peace and contentment coming from you every time I read one of your posts. I am so happy that you have achieved this. It is also my goal and I am definitely making progress in that direction. I am in the process of reading The Happiness Project. Great book!
Lin C- -39 is very cold!! I don't mind going out in the cold. In fact I love to walk in it, but I think I would have to stay inside at -39!

Good morning!
What a beautiful weekend we had here in Va... DH and I went to Charlottesville to visit DDs and go to a basketball game. We so love Cville... but it's always great to be home. We are starting to look for venues for our oldest daughter's wedding next year! Very fun but daunting as well. Yesterday was DH's 60th birthday. He was very introspective and quiet, but he's back to his old, delightful self today! We had a beautiful dinner at Ruth's Chris last night and I actually managed to stay on plan...
That being said it is really frustrating seeing my 50+ body not respond to all the extra exercise and careful monitoring of intake... I've tried eating back some of those exercise calories, but not sure that it is helping to fuel the ol bod. I always hear you have to eat to lose, but it's not working very well.
I'm staying with it because I know that it is really about good health, but I really, really want to lose some of the "middle aged woman look."

:flowerforyou: Lucy--So sorry to hear you lost your father-in-law. Prayers to you and your family. Sounds like you were really lucky to have gotten to know him. I know your mother in law will really need you and your husband in the days ahead. We lost my FIL 13 years ago... my MIL is still with us, praise God and a delight to spend time with. She still misses her sweet husband though.
Everyone else! I've read your posts and you are an inspiration to me. Thanks for keeping the positive energy radiating and lifting the rest of us up.

Thank you everyone for your condolences and prayers. Besides the stroke, my poor FIL also had altzheimer's, so he didn't even know what was happening. It must have been so scary for him! I'm sure he is now at peace.
:grumble: I am bummed to be back at work on what they are predicting to be the coldest week we've had this year. I was SO ready to be on a beach! But of course, family comes first.:brokenheart: Oh well, there's always next year!:ohwell:
Linda - You are so right! It could have been worse. We still will be able to use our tickets as long as we book before October of 2013. Of course, we are going to be charged an outrageous exchange fee ($150 each ticket!), but they said if we give them a death certificate, they MIGHT wave the fee.:huh:
I was ready to pig out on vacation, but I am back on track today with MFP, although we ate out all weekend (we already had gotten rid of all perishable food). Guess we'll have to go shopping and get some healthy stuff in.:embarassed:

Went up town got my sister fixed up financialy. For those who wonder what this is about. I take care of my sister who is by polar. I receive all her checks pension and those little ones and when she needs money she calls me. Or I would never have went up town in this cold. But can't leave her stuck neither.
While there bought 2 green peppers going to stuff them with sgaghetti squash mixed with bravo sauce beans and rice from last nights supper and grated cheese sounds like something no one would eat but I will. No meat but nothing but good carbs and cheese has some protein.
Well going to check what's in the chat room in diabetic talk.

Good morning, everyone – cold day for an inauguration but yesterday was pretty glorious here. DH and I got out for a walk in the morning and then spent the rest of the day prepping for pizza and football. I found a lite recipe for the German chocolate cake that I tried out – it came out pretty good. The cake wasn’t as tender as it might have been – a little too much flour I think – but the frosting was phenomenal. The best part: instead of eight egg yolks it had three eggs, and instead of three and a half sticks of butter it had six tablespoons total. I’ll probably tinker with it a little and keep it for when I need a birthday cake :laugh:.
Tammytylerjon, I love Charlottesville. DH’s bff lives there, and they all went to school there. It’s a fabulous city with great wineries in the area. One of the wineries is on a large estate and is used for weddings a lot (although I think it’s been bought by the Donald). You have a really good attitude about the whole weight loss/health journey. You’re right, keep doing what’s healthy for your body and it will respond. Sometimes it just takes a little longer. So long as you’re exercising enough and eating right you’ll see changes. Have you been taking measurements? Sometimes the changes come in inches first.
Barbie, you’re right, life is pretty sweet . I also agree that walking is so relaxing and meditative – and something I love too.
Sandy, good for you for logging more miles. I’m going to sign up today and log the 4 miles I got in yesterday. I’m not sure when I’ll get out again – it’s going down to below freezing here as the hard frost hits us – at least no snow or rain. Ooh, cleaning – I got some in yesterday, so I’m hoping today I can just relax and watch movies.
LindaC, we have some little people in the house who are allergic to cats and do the same thing – keep them out of the bedrooms. DSD is the same way in that she’ll insist on holding the cat, then she’s all puffy-faced and teary-eyed with allergies. She’ll figure it out. And you’re right – today’s a new day.

Sunshine, depending on your size and age, you probably want to eat somewhere in the 1200 – 1500 range. If you have more to lose you may need to eat more calories, but you don’t look like you do. It may seem insane but as millions of people will attest, you do need to eat enough to fuel your body, and that’s at a minimum of 1200, not a maximum. Otherwise your body thinks it’s starving and hoards its calories, stops working properly and stalls any weight loss. It might take a little time for it to adjust to the new normal of enough calories, but it will, I promise. (hopefully I’m not repeating what JB told you .)
Gail, that is terrific news about your son. You are blessed indeed. LOL at the wanton woman for the weekend :laugh:.
Michele, I’ve found that a lot of recipes for desserts will be touted as healthy, and they probably are, but they are still high in calories. If I’m going to indulge I just am sure to include that as a snack and try to keep it within my snack allotment. How can you make a ½ cup of popcorn? Isn’t that like 12 kernels or something ?
Renny, I’m glad you have such fond memories of your dad. I’m also glad your mom will get to celebrate her big birthday.
LizM, mom to the rescue! I would love to be close enough to do that for DD. I hope your DH feels better soon – and hope the game turned out the way he wanted it.

SueBDew, doesn’t the “fall” season seem to go on and on? :laugh: One thing about the exercise calories – unless you’re wearing a HRM or something that is measuring how much energy your body is actually expending and not just estimating I wouldn’t give yourself more than three hundred extra calories/hour when you’re working at an aerobic pace (breathing heavily, sweating). I find the calorie estimates in MFP are quite a bit higher than what my heart rate monitor shows – I have a slow heartbeat and low aerobic rate, so I just don’t burn that many calories. MFP is an estimate but it’s not true for everyone. Having said that, I’m with Michele in that I tend to know what I’ve burned on exercise and eat back some of the calories but usually not all of them, especially if I’m working out a lot.

Hi everyone, good morning. Thanks for the compliments on my pic. It's an old photo from 1995. Not sure where all of that hair went! The women in my father's family were decked with long, thick hair. And not just on their heads. :laugh:
Sunshine, as far as I can recall, the MFP members who wrote about exercise calories were eating back between 10% and 50% of what they'd burned. However, I believe most of them were exercising like mad and burning 1000+ calories every day. I agree with what Meg said, that if you're only burning 200-300 then you probably won't need to eat back any or all of those calories. Bottom line is this: listen to your body. It will tell you when it needs fuel. I don't like having hunger pains, not at all. But if I wait to eat until I feel my insides slamming together, and eat very nutritious meals with plenty of beans, greens and protein, I feel satisfied with meals between 300-400 calories and my body reacts with weight loss. Of course this doesn't always happen and I don't always wait until I'm hungry to eat. There are several different schools of thought on this subject, I know. I might have to experiment again.
Here are some things I always have to remind myself:
-Be careful with carbohydrates and get them mostly from beans & vegetable sources instead of processed foods or flours.
-Hold off on the sugar unless it's a small amount in a recipe, or a piece of fruit, or occasional piece of dark chocolate.
-Eat beans or legumes daily. Go low on grains.
-Heaps of salad greens & mixed vegs for lunches with added protein.
-Get enough good oils every day from avocados, nuts and olive oil.
-Limit dairy to milk in coffee, fat free yogurt, light sour cream, bite of cheese, reduced fat feta, maybe 1/2 c. of light ice cream.
-Water, 8-10 glasses daily, always a glass or 2 before meals.
-Very little added salt.
-Keep your paws out of the chips!
Oh goodness, time's flown by and I must go get started with my day!

Edited to add that M is absolutely correct, 1200 is a minimum, not a maximum. I know many people eat under 1200, and I've heard it's ok once in awhile as long as ALL of the calories are from good, nutritious foods. But it is not smart on a regular basis. You'll get too hungry and tend to binge.0 -

Thanks. I'm 5'6" and have quite a tummy roll .... in the picture the photographer had my put one on the grandkids on my lap so you can't see it. It's quite depressing. Oh well, working it off hopefully. And I have been making my "1200" a maximum, not a minimum so I will try to do better with that. The last thing I need is to get stalled right now. :grumble: I have a feeling though that since we are spending 2 weeks in Italy that it's going to be VERY difficult keeping it around 1200.0 -

DeeDee you have more gremlins than anyone.
I had a busy weekend. Of course, I always have a busy weekend. Despite the cold I was actually able to ride a couple of animals. Yesterday I just rode in the pasture which is always scary because I just know if one of the loose horses takes off at a gallop then the one I'm on is going to bolt from under me too, and usually with a few twists and turns and bucks thrown in. And sure enough the loose ones were a total pain in the kister. The youngest one kept rearing up at my horse and trying to bite him. They are buddies and play constantly in the field, but I could not make him understand that he couldn't play when I was on top of him. then the other horse kept taking off and kicking out at us. After about 10 minutes they settled down and I was able to get a 20 minute ride in.
It was only 10 degrees while I was out there but I have to say with my long johns, flannel lined blue jeans, a shirt over my long underwear shirt, a sweatshirt over that, a flannel over that, and covered by my down jacket, I was not cold for a second (oh, and the extra warm socks from Bass Pro Shop helped too).
A few years ago I accidently bought a mink coat (put the opening bid on it and expected to be outbid). Well, when I went home with it I told myself that if I was going to spend thousands of dollars on a coat, then I was going to wear the darn thing. And wear it I do - every really cold day. I am so grateful to have this coat now. You absolutely can't get cold with real fur!! I want to find an old raggedy one for cheap so I can clean stalls in it0 -
Sunshine- I am almost at goal, but still have the belly fat that I would like to get rid of. The bariatric specialist I see suggested doing intervals of fast jogging/running with a 1.5 to 2 minute brisk walk cycle repeated for the length of your workout. She also said to be sure to get protein (for me 30 g) right after the workout to give the muscles what they need. Just started doing this. It feels like a great workout. I'll let you know how it works.

Ok ladies, I have participated in Renny's fruit and vegetable challenge all 3 Saturdays so far and I have to tell you, it has really made a difference in how I feel and what I eat the rest of the week! I am now a big fan of my hummus and vegi wrap that I came up with and I have been amazed at how much less hungry I have been on the days that I am extra careful about empty calories! Yesterday we had a big reception at our church and I ended up eating a piece of cake (I had already eaten my lunch). I was STARVING by the time I got home. I realize that we all need a treat now and then, just still can't believe what a difference this has made!
I was asked by someone (forgot to take notes1) if I was diabetic. The short answer is no. But, since Type 2 diabeties is on both sides of my family, it is a very strong possibility. Not only that by my son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 25 (a very late diagnosis, usually found before teen years) and is currently doing 4 shots a day. Because of all of this and the fact that I work in pharmacy, I am very mindful of things that diabetics deal with.
Someone else asked me what part of Missouri I'm from. I live in the country outside the small town of Rogersville. It's about 20 minutes east of Springfield and for those of you not familiar with Missouri, I'm also about 45 minutes from Branson. EVERYBODY seems to know where Branson is (population about 4000) and nobody knows where Springfield is (population about 160,000)! It always makes me laugh!

I had meant to mention before: yesterday DH bought some sticky buns for his breakfast and I wound up having one (hey, it was my birthday). Literally within 10 minutes I felt like I needed to lay down and have a nap, the sugar rush hit me that fast. DH pointed out it means my body is reacting much more efficiently to food - but also a huge indicator how far I have come from eating sugar all the time.
For a year after high school I worked at a call center for Best Western. I could not believe how many people would call to get reservations there - I didn't know anything about it, but it sure was popular, possibly the most popular place we had. Still haven't been though .0 -
Onto Part 3 of January! It's all good.
Two of my nieces (no they are not sisters) each gave birth to their second child. Little baby girl on Saturday, and little baby boy today. Wow! Both babies were born about 3 weeks early, and both families now have a boy and a girl. Wow again. All are doing well.

I shopped all weekend for the perfect interview outfit,,,finally yesterday I got it..ended up all I needed was the perfect jacket and added a new pair of shoes :blushing: Excited thanks for the positive thoughts..interview is Weds.

Anyone on Pintest - I also made a recipe yesterday I got from there...roasted brussel sprouts with garlic aioli..I made the aioli with light mayo...I hate brussel sprouts and everyone loved the dish me and the kids included!!!! Dad enjoyed having us! WE had a good time and the kids helped me cook and clean up. They make me crazy but they are really great!! I am looking forward to my 18 yr old son getting alittle older though..he is sending me to the hair dresser alot to cover my gray hairs!!! :laugh: It could be soooo much worse!!!

:flowerforyou: For those of you who are newer to this thread and have noticed how much I walk, I thought I’d tell you a little about my walking history. I have always walked and danced but not like I do now. About fifteen years ago I read a tiny article in the quarterly publication of a professional journal about a couple who had lost weight by walking four miles every day. Every other article in the journal made me feel inadequate rather than inspiring me to try harder but the challenge of walking four miles every day seemed like something I could do and I got a pedometer and started paying more attention to walking. I ate healthy with total disregard for portion control. This all helped me keep my weight under 200 but never really contributed to weight loss.
When I retired I walked more but still made no changes to my eating. When we moved to Washington in 2004 I found my first line dance class which gradually became three classes a week. I walked our one dog occasionally and walked in the neighborhood almost daily but generally struggled to reach the goal of 10,000 steps a day. In 2009 my husband found Isagenix and I found MFP and I began logging food and paying attention to calories. I added a bit more dog walking (by now we had two dogs) and we bought an exercise bike and placed it in the middle of the living room facing the TV. I rode the bike a lot and took the dogs to the dog park and walked while they played but still struggled to reach 10,000 steps a day.
When the exercise bike broke and I had no early morning exercise, I decided to walk the dogs for the 20 minutes I had been riding the bike. Since then, the dog walks have increased gradually (today we walked for two hours after breakfast). As I became more mindful of eating I realized that too many calories were being wasted on restaurant meals and too much time was being spent sitting at tables talking and I began suggesting to friends that we meet for a walk instead of lunch or a seated visit.
None of this happened overnight. My journey is both unique to me and universal…….some of it will resound with you and some will suggest a different approach, but no matter what, if you’re moving, you’re losing and it falls to each of us to find ways to move more.

Fell short this weekend on my goals. I only dreadmilled for an hour each day. instead of two and I sat at the computer way too much booking things for our vacation.
Back on track today. :drinker:
I am so excited about heading to Vegas at the end of the week for Olivia's first birthday. then the interview and then in two short weeks off Kauai with one or our sons from Sacramento meeting us there and my daughter from Minnesota meeting us there too! It will be an awesome vacation and much needed to recharge the rainbow cloak.
Lots of hiking and active adventures are planned but some downtime reading planned as well. I am hoping to get over 20,000 steps per day.

To eat or not to eat Exercise calories...that IS always the question, isn't it? I agree that if you burn major calories you need to eat some of them to get adequate nutrition...NOT junk, but real, whole foods. But, some days you just need to eat more of them than others. As always, we need to do what works best for ourselves. I try to only log part of the calories that my HRM says I have burned for a couple of reasons. Mainly so I won't be tempted to eat more than I need, but also, in case I report some foods calories incorrectly...it gives me a a bit of a cushion.

Tigress- Congrats on your sons graduation from Basic. I remember attending all three of our sons graduations ( 2 Army and 1 Air Force). It was such an emotional time for us as we watched our three sons grow to manhood.

Eating back the calories....well I have to admit I don't usually eat them unless I have a lot of extra then I will eat a bit more. Really it all boils down to what works for each individual.
My Saturday was a day of indulgence. We had lunch out with Son #2 & DIL to celebrate her birthday. I had a salad and soup both of were masquerading as "healthy". But it really was the evening that got me ... Son #2 was playing at the Brown Palace in the lobby with a quartet for 3 hrs and then in the Ships Tavern (solo) for the rest of the evening. We dressed up, had dinner reservations, met our friends there .... and those that wanted to could get up and sing with the piano....after three glasses of wine :drinker: I went and sat with my son and sang while he played:blushing: Of course I had to drink a lot of water to wash away all of my Saturday night. I did make a good choice for dinner had the trout and it was very good.
Spent Sunday prepping our food for the week and cooking a lot of chicken for hubby and his diet. It is time consuming but worth it when I can head to the frig and know that there are all those good choices just waiting for me. I also made some sugar free jello, some low fat, low carb, low calorie pudding and my crustless, sugarless pumpkin. So we are ready for a good week.

Beautiful day for a walk. Barbie - enjoyed reading about your journey so far. I've had an Ah Ha moment this morning. After reading jb and Barbie's posts, I realized it's not the # of calories you eat that is the utmost importance it's the quality of those calories. You could eat 1200 calories in Ding Dongs (before they went bankrupt) and not be getting any of the nutrition you need for your body to function.I've only been here since the first of September and I've been reading and tweaking calories, exercise calories and not really focusing on what those calories are.

Lucy - so sorry about your FIL's passing. Hope you can reschedule your vacation soon.
M - I have a program on my iphone called Map My Walk and it tracked miles, minutes and calories. I agree that MFP is way too high. If I add in the calories burned, I can't hit the 1200 net! I also have a new toy the Nike Fuel Band and it tracks energy used, calories, steps and it's a watch. Lots of information but I still think it's the nutrition I need to be more mindful of.
Joined the virtual walk and my two DD in CO and going to do it also. Hope we can partner up and do it together. I've walked 14 miles so far. They will catch me in a few days.
Have to go think of something nutritious for dinner. Have chicken breast defrosted and 1/2 of a cauliflower to use up. BBL

Well, the best laid plans and all that..... I intended to tackle some housekeeping chores today but received a call from oldest DD, who is about 45 minutes from here in grad school. DH and I had to go there to help her as a part of the trim on her car had broken on one side and was hanging by a thread. She had called two dealerships; they both wanted to keep the car for a day or two and she is too young to rent a car. We went there to trade cars with her but the part is an easy one to switch out so we came home, ordered the part and we will meet up sometime soon so DH can put the new one on.
We took her to lunch but there was nothing but junk food places near her school. We went to KFC but I was as good as I could be there - one piece of grilled chicken (no skin), green beans and water. Two weeks ago, that would have been original recipe fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and Dr Pepper. After we got home, I put Leslie Sansone's 4 mile Power Walk in the DVD so I feel pretty good about the afternoon!0
