Black Team Week 8!!!!!

Hope everyone had a great week and did well with this last weeks challenge.
For this week we are looking at a pretty common problem.
Night time snacking.
Most of us know that the worst time to eat is at night. Food is the LAST thing your body needs before shutting down for 8 hours. Your metabolism slows when your at rest so it's even more difficult for your body to burn those calories you ate right before bed. In fact the word "Breakfast" was derived from the concept that the meal is intended to "Break" the "fast" that you have endured since dinner the prior evening. And you guys know as well as I do that when we give in to "late night" cravings, we very rarely reach for an apple. So for this week we will not be eating after dinner. NO FOOD between dinner and breakfast. This is a challenge that we should really try to make perminant as I think it's so very important and a huge challenge for alot of us.
Now this of course is easier said than done so I wanted to share some tips that might help.
- Make sure your eating your calories during the day. At least three good meals and two snacks or 5 small meals. One of the biggest pit falls you can have is not eating enough. Try to make sure you get your calories in by dinner.
-If the urge to eat comes along try drinking some water, or better yet make some decaf tea. Warm beverages can be soothing and will help fill you up.
-Keep junk food out of site. Out of site out of mind. Better yet would be to not have it in the house, but not everyone has that luxury so don't leave it out on the counter where it will taunt you.
-Have a piece of hard candy or sugar free gum. It's not the best option but a small piece of candy will be a much better choice than a bag of chips.
-STAY BUSY- Keep busy with a hobby. Find something to keep you occupied. Try not to watch to much TV. It lends itself to snacking and lord knows the advertisements are designed to make you hungry.
-Might sound odd, but brush your teeth. Alot of folks feel like their mouth is "Closed for business" once they brush. Their are several studies that have shown this is often an effective trick.
I am pretty sure that many of us should take a close look at this one. Good luck this week guys!

Good challenge! I mostly don't eat after dinner, but for real, if I do, it's fruit. I have a rule for my kids that if they HAVE to eat after dinner, as in a snacki, that it's fruit or veges. Of course they never pick veges, but they eat apples, bananas, grapes, grapefruit or oranges. So if I'm hungry, I do it too.
Naturally, after like a year of doing this, they still ask almost every night 'What can I have for snack?' I guess they are hoping I will say ice cream!0 -
"Fat" Skinny" and now "Fat" again...My Story
I don’t think I have ever shared my story and I don’t know why I haven’t but I’m feeling inspired to do so after reading Beth and Lori’s post in the last thread. Ten years ago my sister approached me with a Christian nutrition class that was starting at her friend’s church. I really didn’t want to join because I was embarrassed to admit that I needed help… until I saw my sister and a friend actually start losing weight. I joined and without the accountability the group offered I don’t think I could have lost the weight. I started at 199 ¾ pounds and got down to 121lbs in 8 months. I never was a runner and really despised hard work so when I ran my first mile I was thrilled. I signed up for my first 10k and was truly hooked on running. I have a couple of half marathons under my belt as well. I was featured on the cover of a National Christian Magazine and in our local newspaper. Even after my daughter was born I was still able to complete a half marathon but did not lose all my weight (I was around 141 lbs).
Now, after my second child I am struggling to manage being a “supermom” to my kids a caring and loving wife to my husband and boyfriend(just joking seeing if your still listening LOL), A+ student, part time counselor, exercising and eating healthy.( FYI I hate using the word “diet” it implies restrictions that I don’t want any part of). I taught a nutrition and exercise class. I was the “fat” girl that became “skinny” and “fat” again. I have sizes ranging from size 16 to size 2’s, even little girl sizes. I can remember when I first started losing my weight and saying “I’ll never gain it back!” Boy was I wrong. Amazing how your prioritize change in life and how as much as we want to be in control of certain things in our life it sometimes doesn’t work out the way we thought it would. Sometimes I avoid people who knew me when I lost the weight, because I am embarrassed I gained it back (not all I’m proud to say) but I do worry about who I’m going to run into. Losing weight isn’t as hard as keeping it off believe me. I have been there twice and now working toward keeping it off for good. I’ve come to realize that this is a lifetime journey that will take every ounce of obedience and discipline that I have. So, to wrap “my story” I wish all of you great success on your journey and may yours bring you peace of mind and…skinny clothes.
Thanks for listening0 -
Jan, thank you for your timely story!! I got on the scale today and for the first time saw a real increase in my weight. I jumped on here to read the challenge for the week because I knew I have to be accountable. My friends here love me and will not judge..........but will whack me upside the head outta love too!!
So I read your story.......one of success and of regression..........and I remembered the times I lost weight only to gain it back and feel like crap about myself.
I really needed to hear that while it is 3 pounds and not 30!!
You WILL do this!!
As for the night time food....Andrew, do you have a camera in my house:huh:
Never night snacked before but have gotten into the habit of a bowl of sugar.....er I mean cereal now. I am snooping for snack cakes and candy bars.....WTH is this....
Tomorrow is a new day!!
Thanks Black Team!:flowerforyou:0 -

Oh that is GREAT Bobbi!!! WOOT!!0 -
Jan-- so glad to hear your story. And it's unreal how quick people are to notice and "tsk, tsk, what a shame" when we see people regain their weight. We were watching "Huckabee" the other night, and I hadn't seen the guy in forever. First thing I blurt out to my husband..."He's getting fat again-- what a shame."
I know those that don't understand will feel a sense of satisfaction seeing people regain their weight. I felt so sad for him. "Mike, old buddy, old friend-- I know how hard it was to lose that weight-- you took off 100 pounds, I've only taken off 40 and it was brutal-- buddy, don't gain it all back-- pleeeeeease!!!!!!!!"
But it happens-- so glad to have this group to hang with who will knock me, as Jeannie said-- love you all.
Tamara-- I guess it was hard for your "real life" friends to see you "brag" for lack of a better word about the calorie burn on facebook. They don't get it, and I'm sorry you got your feelings hurt. Doesn't mean they don't love you, but they're just not in that world-- they don't understand it.
I think you're wise to keep that here. Tell us-- we'll crow with you, cry with you, brag with you, encourage you, kick you, comfort you--
Andrew-- I'm not much of a nighttime snacker, but occasionally I will indulge-- this is good-- thanks.
Busy day today-- wow-- need to scoot.
12-16 inches of snow forecast-- go figure.
Love to all--0 -
Andrew thank you for this!! Last week was a total melt down. I would eat really good all day and then after dinner I couldn't get enough food in my face! so this week I am going to start eating dinner a little later and see if that helps.
Also the gym membership is coming this week so you might not see me anymore. :bigsmile:0 -
Good Evening everyone!
Jan - thanks for sharing your story. I get so inspired with everyone's stories. Would love to see that magazine cover. I bet it was great!:flowerforyou: Andrew, sorry for not posting to you. I'm ok with that though, it didn't move much.. It will look better next week.
Marla - expecting that same accumulation my friend....soooooo sick of it! We've have had our fair share already....geez...
Tamara - I am truly amazed when I see all of your lbs lost along with Jeannie, Roni, Shuntae. Andrew and all of you in double digit losses. It is what keeps me going. When I hit 10 pounds lost I am going to scream from the mountain tops!
Lori - Can you send your DH to my house? All the "honey-do" projects you have are unbelievable....now a deck? wow!
Jeannie - Sorry to hear you're under the weather. I kept feeling like I was catching something. I ran on the treadmill at work at lunch today to try and shake it. Felt good.
oh and the challenge? good thing I didn't read this thread until after DH and came back from the girls playoff bball game. we made a detour to DQ for a cookies and cream blizzard! Yikes! Going to log it now!
Good night to everyone else! have to catch up on previous threads!

Thanks for the chart and the challenge, Andrew. I usually end up eating way too much before bedtime, especially if I watch TV. It is actually better for me if I have to type late at night. Off to bed now. G'night.0

good challenge......Jan, Thanks for sharing. Life change........that what I need to do.0

taf for later just ate my frnech toast and now off to the gym, I am so ready for this workout, then work today...not so ready for that workout!!!0

My honey and I both like to 'do'. We love doing stuff around the house and are both pretty handy. When he's deployed he says I don't need him because I will tackle all sorts of stuff. I woke up thinking decks plans.... it's on the brain! I informed him last night that the next level of deck will be built in benches and a fire pit. He looked at me like I had horns.0 -
Good morning!
Wow, this challenge is going to be a killer for me Andrew. Six months ago I would have looked at it and said oh....easy peasy. But these days...not so easy. Lately Ive been waking up a couple hours after falling asleep and having a strong taste/craving for my peanut butter and syrup:ohwell: Ive been doing that lately on average about 2-3 times a week. Not good, I know. Mixing syrup into a small bowl of peanut butter was always my go-to food when I was stressed. And when it started happening again, I was thinking oh its ok, I dont do it all the time anymore. Ha. Its progressing into happening more and more often. So, I think this challenge will be the kick in the pants that I need to snap back out of it. Thanks Andrew:flowerforyou:
I will try to check back in later...Im running a bit late this morning and need to get my booty in gear Have a great day everyone!:flowerforyou:0 -
Poping in quickly, Thank you for the challenge and table.
Got to dash Thomas has hurt himself at school and waiting for dh to collect him and then dashing to A@E. Will check back later xx0 -
I know I'm not supposed to, but I'm not doing this week's challenge. We eat dinner between 4 & 5 pm & I don't go to bed until 10-11. 6 hours is a long time to be awake without some sort of food in my system, especially when this is when I sometimes exercise.
I WILL however, keep it healthy. No ice cream, no cookies, no junk...I will reach for the apple instead. :bigsmile:0 -
Jan - I needed this right now. Thank you for your story! I was on MFP & lost 50 pounds...from 196 to 146. Stopped logging, thought I had it under control. Came back in January at 170.6. YIKES! But like you said, it is a life time journey. Some people are naturally skinny...the rest of us have to challenge ourselves & keep ourselves in check on a daily basis. Good luck to you reaching all of your goals!
Bobbi - EEEEE! Baby girls are so much fun! Baby boys are awesome, too...but you can't put bows & junk in their hair.
Lori - I love home projects, too! Built in benches & a fire pit sounds PERFECT! Love it!0 -
Thanks Andrew!
The past few days have been junk food crazy at our house. Add to that Girl Scout cookies have arrived and I'm trying to fight off a cold. I've been a bottomless pit. Cool Ranch Doritos, leftover birthday cupcakes, fritos, Dove V-Day chocolate, skittles...sigh.
Jan - I call DH my boyfriend too. Thanks for sharing your story!
Bobbie - Sugar and Spice....
Tanya - Hope Thomas is okay.
Lori - I would love to have an outdoor kitchen area, including a fire pit. DH is quite the handyman too. I love the ideas, love coming up with them, but I have a horrible time finishing projects. I am pretty sure I have adult adhd and since I know this about myself, I try not to start too much. Case in point: flower beds. I love them, love the idea of them, love the thought of doing it myself. Got started last spring on the one out front. I got bored, started to do it half-a$$ed and DH ended up darn near doing the whole thing by himself. It's shocking that he knows this about me and loves me anyway.
Gotta get some work done. Have a good morning friends!0 -
Good morning team...I got some housework done this morning and am now starting typing. Today is gym day so I'll head there after I finish working. I have to go back to the thrift store and pick up my rocking chair today. It is an adorable old chair that has springs instead of rockers and has been recently recovered. I got it for only $35. It will go in my office. I hope you all have a great day.
Lori...That sounds neat. We put in our hot tub last year and built a fire pit near it. We love to sit out there in the evenings. My hubby built a small pond near it with a waterfall. We are on 1/2 acre in a subdivision so it makes a nice retreat.
Tanya...I hope Thomas is okay.
Bobbi...Congrats on the new baby girl!
Jan...Thanks for sharing your story. It is so similar to mine. I have lost weight and gained it back more times than I can count. I hope to reach my goal and stay there and get off this crazy yo-yo ride.0 -

Awesome challenge - I'm in..
I may have to grab a piece of fruit though on the days I swim (we swim 7-9 pm). I don't think it is possible (or wise) to swim laps for 45 minutes and then just go to bed. I would begin sleep walking to the fridge..
I will, however, bring a piece of fruit to eat right after I swim - so it is not more like 9:30-10 when I finish eating for the day..
Time to put away the bad stuff..0 -
Jeannie, Sara, Kati, Tammy..Thank you ! I love my little Alex man to pieces but the thought of a little girl. My daughter is and always will be a little princess. You can ask her... Last night I bought new little grand daughter her first tiara. Hehe...I'm lovin it.0
-
Bobbi- That's awesome about the tiara!
OK, so I owe Marla a post about yesterday's MFP and Facebook statuses. Here goes:
1. Common sense/courtesy = not at all common
I went to the water cooler yesterday so I could make some hot tea at work only to find out that the damn jug was empty. This happens reasonably often and I HATE it. Apparently it's that hard to be grown-ups and fill it when we empty it.
2. Portion control = humor?
I opened a can of soup for lunch on Wednesday and had a salad with it. Went to heat it up and encountered a gentleman that I don't know, etc, etc. I didn't eat all of the soup because I was full. Took the remaining soup in the kitchen to heat it up yesterday and saw the same gentleman.
Him: You didn't eat all that soup yesterday?
Me: No, I had a salad and didn't want to eat it all.
H: Well, that lunch was pretty weak already - I can't believe you didn't eat it all. *chuckle*
M: Nope.
H: Well, guess that's why I'm fat and you're thin.
That sentence alone made my whole damn day. I didn't even need to say anything else.0 -

Shuntae-- love it !!!!!
Hubs and I ran into a guy today we haven't seen in almost 5 years..... and 40-something pounds ago who commented on my weight loss. It was awesome!
Best news-- fingers crossed everybody--
An excitement has been just born-- my husband just got a call from somebody regarding potential sponsorship for my daughter's golf-- she's officially a pro but we have presently no money to get her into the tournaments and pay for travel, and sponsors have been nowheresville.
Not sure if it would be prudent to tell you with whom right now-- but loreeb especially (and I think Mrs. Beans, if I remember correctly...or Sam? Shuntae?? Or all of the above-- can't remember all of you) will find it very interesting. You'll drool over it-- but until then, I won't say a peep.
But, it would be totally cool.
I'll tell you more if/when it's either final or a no-go--
Everybody-- good sponsor vibes.0 -

YAY fingers crossed for Sarah. But so not fair to not say if it is drool worthy!!!0 -
I just have to say that I have found a "diet" snack that I like and I think I can make it at home. There are no diet aids in it just puffed wheat and some other stuff. they are Full Bars.
I should have 2 wedding cakes and the first wedding cake bride/groom saw my Mets cake and said that they wanted me to make that too for his sisters birthday! I have a excel spreadsheet set up and I am giving them a great deal way lower then the spreadsheet says but they are friends of friends and her parents are both unemployeed so they don't have a ton of money for their wedding. Hope they decided yes.0
