    Oh that's so stupid!

They decided t orally eliminate fashion industry.

On the other hand there's no fashion in Israel, none, zero. Everybody who meant something in the fashion world already ran away to Paris, Milano or NYC. So Israel can put fat models on the runway, fat dancers on the stage, it's not gonna make them a better country.

see a higher percentage of slender women in the US than I do in Israel
    I find that VERY surprising.

Edit: I'll explain my question. While I've never been to the States, I have been to Canada and several countries in Europe. One leading problem: I'm usually too small for the clothes over there. My friend who's considered quite big here bought a size L pants in Berlin and had to get back to the store the day after and switch them for a size S because they were too big for her. As for myself, in several stores I couldn't find anything my size at all, and that was when I was one size bigger. It's not that different than how tiny I felt in Canada. So I find that hard difficult to believe.

I think it's a good move. Models are usually just skinny rather than fit, so BMI is an applicable measure of their body composition in this case, though I understand there would be a few exceptions.

Everywhere I've been in continental Europe I felt like a giant as a US size 4-6 (relatively small), I probably didn't stand out as a huge person, but I'm used to being smaller than most Americans, and the difference was palpable, to me. I have never noticed any perceivable difference in Canadians and Americans en masse, though I have only been to bigger cities and tourist spots that were probably equal mixes of Americans and Canadians anyway (Toronto, Montreal, Windsor, Mt Tremblant). I've never been to the middle east to make any observations.

You're a perfect example of the dangers of using BMI for anything other than a rough approximation of fitness. Many NBA players, who are some of the most fit elite athletes on the planet, have BMIs which place them in the "obese" range. So, to use it to bar employment seems a little misguided to me.

My take is that the fashion industry only uses models with body types that appeal to the customers (women). When women stop supporting these body types with their patronage, the industry will stop using skinny teen-age girls, and maybe the incidence of eating disorders will be reduced.

BTW, congrats on how fit you look.
My BMI is 18.3. And I am healthy. Should I be fired?

When I was anorexic and striving for lower weights, the models in magazines were actually a major motivation for me, and I was heavily influenced by them. My ED was additionally fed by seeing all these super slender, perfect looking bodies, and that was when you still had the less emaciated models such as Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista.

I know that I, personally, lost my periods if my bmi is below 18, and I am 5'10.

I also would question why someone who had a BMI of around 18.5-19, decided they needed to lose 4 Ibs, that sounds somewhat disordered to me.

I've said this before. I never decided to lose 4 pounds. I am not trying to lose weight. I am working on my fitness. As a result I lost 4 pounds, which is really insignificant and not an indicator of disorder. When I joined mfp, it set me at 1500, which I immediately saw was too low, so I found my TDEE and increased to 1800, still too low (I lost 4 pounds over a 4 month time frame, so did not even realize it at first). But, I did not know much about calories or how much I needed. I eat over 2000 calories a day, and actually track it such that if I lose weight I continually increase my calories because I don't want to lose weight and I don't want to be any slimmer. I am a dancer and a very active person. I have a husband, two children, and a wonderful doctor. My health is extremely important to me. And that is why I want people to understand that. I am the same weight I have always been for all of my adult life. I am getting older. And since joining mfp, I have seen an improvement in my current body composition (with minimal weight loss over a very long time frame). I do not find muscle gain to be as easy as some people are claiming. If someone were to post a thread about getting bulky, then we would hear pages and pages of chorus about how difficult it really is to gain muscle (especially for women). I also have injuries which cause me to have a slower progression in weight lifting. I do no cardio. Just my dancing (which is like yoga), yoga, walking (just to get from place to place, sometimes leisurely hiking (for fun), and strength training. My weight fluctuates so that some days the number in the ticker would be 2. It's pretty arbitrary. I just had to pick numbers to put in there. I could make the weight loss higher, by putting in the highest weight I've been (i have had 2 children).

Also, just want to say that I think this has been a great conversation also. Thanks everyone!

I just can't see how they will enforce this, seems useless to me.

It sounds to me like they're not planning on enforcing it strictly, except to opening the companies up to lawsuit liability. So I assume it will be voluntary compliance, or perhaps nothing will change. IDK.

Your question was where was it. In Italy.

In all my life, I have never heard it called Milano.

It appears only actual Italian speakers call it that. And, of course, people like GoGlam. :-)

Geeeez, and what makes you think I don't speak Italian? And made you the judge of the correct pronounciation?

FYI I speak 4 languages, and Italian is one of them. Get over yourself.
