Fat-Shaming May Curb Obesity?

but a 99% tax on all those over 12% BF... two things will occur, the will lose weight themselves, or they will be so heavily taxed they will not be able to eat those loose weight that way...no excuse to be fat its a personal choice a poor one that that. being fat is like being a drug addict you choose the lift style if you dont like the way your treated change yourself not others.
Being under 12% fat is not ideal for many women.
lol notsureifserious.jpeg inform me oh wise one what BF should everyone be?0 -
The only reason why I chose to be proactive before I actually became overweight or obese was the fact that boyfriend told me that I need to lose weight and run. So I did. I think it's pretty ****ing ridiculous for girls to get offended when their S.O tells them they are chunky and need to lose some.
Get the **** off the couch, stop being lazy and browsing the internet for eight hours a day and go outside and run. That's what I did and I lost nine pounds already. Light, tough love constructive criticism is FINE, but bullying and calling others a fat piece of **** or disgusting is just cruel and inhumane. There is a line where it's love, and where its just bullying.
THIS!!!!! What I really want to tell people is not that their fat, but to stop being a delicate flower, and get off the couch!!!!0 -
Yaaaayyyyy, another "obese people are lazy slobs" thread. Because the one yesterday wasn't enough.
We slow, panting, sweaty obese people are on this site, losing weight, and trying our best. How about some respect instead of name-calling?
You see that ticker underneath my post? I'd say I'm doing quite well, and anyone who wants to refer to me as a land beast should 1) take a biology course and 2) apologize straightaway.
I figured out what my issue was (insulin resistance + too many carbs), cut my calories, lowered my carbs, started taking medication to regulate my insulin, and started exercising.
So, basically, bite me.0 -

There's no reason everyone should have the same BF%. For women a BF% in the 20's is healthy so it would be ridiculous to tax them for being in the heatlhy range.0 -
I don't think we need to shame people but I do think we need to quit making excuses for obesity being accepted as the norm. Stop adjusting sizes so the overweight can feel good about themselves, making allowances on public transport, ***** footing around the word fat by using chubby, fluffy, etc, making adjustments to the work place to accommodate the obese.
There's the odd special snowflake out there who has some genuine medical problem that causes a weight issue but for the 99% it's a matter of getting your head in the game. Pretending it's alright is not helping.
Edit: Seriously? Another word for cat is deserving of censorship? SMHI'm fine with not vanity sizing. A number is a number. But stop making allowances on public transport? You mean seats big enough to accomodate people who need a place to sit. Sorry, that's straight up sizism. You're not human enough to deserve a seat if your *kitten* is a certain size? **** that ****. People are people. We need to treat each other with a basic level of respect and dignity regardless of physical appearance.
People are people but when your *kitten* is too big to fit in a normal size seat then you have the problem. It's not the responsibility of the rest of the world to go out of their way to accommodate your oversized rear. Try sitting on a plane for 7 hours with a morbidly obese person beside you who needs a seatbelt extension and is overflowing into your seat. Why does my comfort have to be compromised because you can't get a grip on your eating? I don't want your fat laying on me!0 -

People I love and care about are considered obese and never in a million years would I call them fat. Especially since they are very active and eat very healthy. So there is also an assumption that the person is a lazy unehalthy slob, which is not the case either.
How can one "eat very heatlhy" and be obese? Certianly you could eat too much foods that are generally considered "healthy" and become obese from doing so, but that would not be "healthy eating". A heatlhy diet is one that would be expected to improve or maintain health. Obesity would not be expected to do either.
Saying someone eats too much and/or moves too little is not the same as calling them a lazy unhealthy slob.
I don't know. They have always been big and their kids were big from even an early age. They eat well because they cook homemade dinners for a family of 7 everyday and there are 4 kids in the home which keeps everyone busy. The father works fulltime and does a lot of outside work (gardening, wood working). The mother had been on weight watchers for YEARS and has lost a lot of weight. I just know they have been eating healthy and exercising and are active for years and year (in their 50s now) and I just picture someone "shaming" them, when really... what else would they be doing differently?
And aren't you being a bit contradictory? If we don't consider obese people to be lazy and unhealthy then why would shaming be involved?0 -
If that happened to me, you'd find me in the closet with a couple king size snickers bars. I call BS.0
-
Two things surprised me. The first that this is just a plan, not a study. I might have been interested in a study.
Secondly, this guy doesn't already believe that this is happening? When we all watch movies where the "fat" girl is still within a healthy weight range? When people are afraid to call fat people fat because of all the negative associations?
We need to get over the culture of silence. Obesity is plastered all over our media, but it is practically taboo in everyday conversation.0 -
Wow if this actually worked I would be thin right now.0

you cannot encourage or reinforce behavior with shame.0

This is supposed to be a supportive site. And there are a lot of people on here considered overweight or obese for whatever reason. This is a place where people come to get support and make changes.
This is a site to count calories, to many people rely on the crutch of internet friends telling them how awesome they are. People need to learn how to stand on their own, thats when the successes will come.
It is supposed to be a supportive environment. Give up the crap.0 -

Obese people have a much greater risk of being or becoming unhealthy. That has nothing to do with being lazy or a slob.
You gain weight by consuming more calories than you burn. That is not the same as being lazy. It's the same as eating too much for your lifestyle. Being overweight raises your risk for disease, so IMO it seems illogical to ever say that eating enough to become overweight is a healthy diet.
None of that has anything to do with being a slob. A healthy person of an ideal weight could be a slob.0 -
Most fat people can look in the mirror or stand on a scale to know they are fat. They do not need a-holes telling them. Bullies tant shame overweight people should be shamed themselves.0

I'm not calling anyone a slob. I just don't understand why you are okay with shaming but do not think they are a slob. So what would you be shaming about? Because you "think" they are unhealthy. Did you know that people who are overweight are more likely to live longer than those underweight? Let's shame underweight people then since they are "healthy". Don't BS me. People LOVE the skinny underweight models yet they are MORE unhealthy and undernourished in a lot of circumstances. So if you were so concerned about "health" you'd shame that too.0 -
My daughter was bullied in school (high school). She was a size 4 and was not over weight at all.
I had to send her to the family physician, nutritionist, psychiatrist, and enlist the help of friends. \
She was well on her way to anorexia. She went from around 132 to 106 in a month or two and is a size 00 now.
I have her maintaining at 108 and have set a minimum weight that is she passes I have to have her committed to a program.
Bullying made a perfectly fit girl become very unhealthy. It is a dangerous place to go and I strongly recommend against it.
Instead of saying your fat or obese or overweight, how about saying hey how would you like to start hiking with me on the weekends. Or hey I am trying to eat healthier, it would much easier if I had a good friend do it with me. Positive motivation if persistent can go a very long way. Some people just will not change and you can't make them. Laying out your concern on their behalf can. My daughter expressed her concern about me being around when she is older, asking me to work out more and eat better. Well here I am, posting on MFP and watching my calories and what I eat i.e. the types of food etc.0 -

its ridiculous to think that. go to a doctor and ask what is healthier 20% or 12%. that thought process alone is the reason why the US population is at a higher rate then anywhere else. why strive to be what you should when you can argue being fat is ok. please stop trying to argue being fat is ok0 -
I didn't see in the article where he was suggesting teaching our kids to poke fat people with sticks yelling names. What I took from the article is a shift in they way people as a whole think and act towards obesity. People react strongly to peer pressure and obesity has become socially acceptable. Instead of telling people they are fine and perfect little snowflakes just the way they are, maybe we should be honest with each other and ourselves. We eat too much. We don't move enough. It makes us look unattractive. It hurts our health.
And sometimes tough love works. Everyone should strive to be better than they are. Instead of living in an "I'm perfect just the way I am" bubble putting on blinders to reality.
I would also like to add, there's a fine line between shaming and honesty. Being deliberately hurtful to someone in order to make myself feel better (or make them feel bad).. I call that shaming. If I tell you something that is hurtful but true out of concern for your health, is that really shaming?
We are way too quick to take offense at every slight, to nurse wounded pride and to react negatively to new ideas.0 -
I think a much more effective idea is to make it harder to get health care/welfare if you are obese.
That's cold. I hope you don't work in healthcare.0 -
Huh. Cool article, thanks!0

You also have to take in to account those who are emotional/stress/bored eaters. I am one and even if I eat "healthy"...I have gone on a binge when I've felt too down..and not on junk food either. Salad, grapes, etc...and I still overate on this (calorie wise). So you wonder How can one "eat very heatlhy" and be obese? - quite easily. I knew a vegan that was bigger than me and she was also a emotional eater.0 -
It is an interesting theory. I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Fat people were shamed much more than today back then. There were far fewer fat people. But I'm not sure that shaming was the reason. But the author is correct that shaming smokers did cause a dramatic drop in the number of smokers.
And for those talking of bullying, shaming and bullying are the same thing.0 -

First of all, I never said I was okay with shaming. But even if I had, what does shaming someone for being obese have to do with being a slob? Your rant about the models seems off topic and without a point.
People who are overweight live longer than those that are underweight because so many people become underweight just before they die due to sickness. Again, a bit off topic and somewhat pointless for the topic at hand.
Perhaps you should read the article.0 -

For a woman, 12% is pretty low and reaching into ranges that can affect reproductive health, especially when combined with intense exercise. Even professional trainers and athletes are often in the low teens.0 -

I assumed your original post was sarcastic. Now I'm not so sure.
You do know that for women 12% body fat is considered 'essential fat', right? You know, the stuff that protects your organs, that you need just to live. So you are asking that they be not only ripped, but ripped to the degree that it would pretty much be a full time job just to maintain it. Forget the 99% tax, they'd have no time to work anyway, unless we re-tool our entire economy to be based on female bodybuilders. The acceptable (from a medical standpoint) BF% for women is 25-31%.
For men, it's a bit more attainable, but still a hell of job. You are advocating that all men have to be in the athletic category - think six pack and good muscle separation. The 'acceptable' (from a medical standpoint) BF% range for men is 18-25%.
Here's a couple of image of different BF% -
