because you're not real. you are all figments of my imagination. and this is proven by the fact that i'm the first to say it.

OR maybe i'm just that tiny voice that means your new medication is working and YOU are the one who's hallucinating.

I Ben Spellman of Salem MA do not feel the need to hide behind my keyboard. I make myself very accessible. I am also very happy with my life, the results I get working out, my friends, and my family. However, I am very mean because it seems like some of the lowest in the gene pool can't wait to get on the interwebs and put up some of the stupidest things on earth, and then cry foul when people call them on it.
Do you seriously think that 3 day diet is the cure all? Does every damn picture need to go through instagram? Do you really think carbs are the reason you're fat? Does no one see an issue with everyone who is over weight now believing it's because we all have Celiac Disease? Have you really met anyone on earth who credits their 6-pack to the ab lounge?
It's cool though. People can keep bringing stupid things to the table and I will continue to flame, mock, and troll them until they decide accountability and common sense are the things they are really missing. If this is really a huge issue though you can feel free to e-mail me @ LogicEngage@aol.com and I will be happy to read all your e-mails asking why I am so mean or how I'm going to hell or whatever you think will all of a sudden make me see things your way. :drinker:

    ahahahahahahah OMG girl! I totally <3 u!!!

and for what it is worth I <3 u too Ben!!! for obvious reasons...

I guess I'm mean everywhere, I'm studying to be a nurse and I recently had a co-worker ask if I was going to change my personality when I get my RN because I say mean stuff now... :noway: One of my bosses said she wanted to be a fly on the wall when I start caring for patients because she seems me telling them to suck it up and get off their assets...:noway:

yeah, maybe if they could empty their own recycling bin I wouldn't have to be so stinking mean...

now, what were we talking about ??? wait, what? it wasn't about me? say wha?

    1. People who spend time getting involved in internet discussions are either really passionate about the subject of the forum or really bored, and if the former, they're going to let you know that they a) care b) know more than you and/or c) want you off their lawn. If the latter, they may just post something that passes for intelligent conversation and move on.

    2. Who can actually explain people being mean to other people? It might be depression and self-loathing, it might just be a way of asserting oneself, it might be a bad case of gas, it might be a poor upbringing, it might be that their best friend's favorite cat has leukemia, it might be that time of the month and there's no chocolate around... you CAN'T give a blanket rationale for everyone who tosses out a snarky comment. Some people, like the get-off-my-lawn-ers, probably suffer from deep internal scarring of some sort. Some people just really might not know how to express themselves in any other way. Some want chocolate and can't find any. Life sucks sometimes, and sometimes forums are the easiest way to ***** about it.

    3. On many forums, like here, anyone can comment on almost anything - which means that practically nobody knows the person they're talking to. A disconnect with other people is a very strong reason why a "mean" person might feel comfortable venting... maybe they can't vent to their real live companions. On other forums which are more private and people either are or are becoming "friends", hardly any meanness comes out.

    4. As for sarcasm: sarcasm is something I've almost always been able to interpret in text, and most people who have been around the interwebz as long as I have can do the same. For those who are newer to forum posts and online discussion/email, or those who are just not comfortable with it as a medium: if you seriously take a remark as hurtful, you might want to re-read it in context; you might see the humor value in it after all. Not everyone assures that their sarcasm is dotted with emoticons, but some do. Take everything you read with a grain of salt.

    Also,

See, I've used the net since the mid 90's, but I do not remember it being like it is now. Maybe I'm getting soft in my older age as time passes.

WHAT? I've used the net since the late '90s... and this place is still one of the tamer forums I've ever been on.

It may not be the worst, but that doesn't mean it's always a positive place.

Serious answer-- I think most of the time what people perceive as mean is really just snarky/sarcastic joking. Most of the time when I see someone complaining about meanness, and I go back and look at what they're talking about, I just don't see it.

    ^^^THIS!!!

There REALLY needs to be some kind of sarcasm font. Sarcasm just does NOT come off well in print, without the accompanying body language. My humor tends to be extremely dry and sarcastic, and mostly unappreciated. *sigh* I am actually one of the biggest softies that ever existed, and I care so much for people that I have to hide it behind a wall of introverted humor that doesn't always translate well...

I agree with both of you, but I'd say... sarcasm has been in print for CENTURIES. There were people who laughed at Swift, and people who got incredibly offended. It's not the text or the font; it's on the reader to be able to interpret properly. Hell, that's what most text interpretation is about!

It's just a shame that it seems like that (now that literacy is so high) there's more exposure to people who don't understand text.

I don't think sarcasm font is needed, it's usually pretty clear to me when someone isn't being serious.

That's what I'm saying! Yet... look at the response below you. ;)

Ok fair enough, maybe we need a sarcasm font. I wonder though whether it would matter. I think it's likely that even if people knew that a response is sarcastic, they might just think it was mean anyway.

Also I'd forget to use the font and get myself in trouble regardless. :)

People are expressing their opinions on the internet more freely than in person since in person you will not have the ability to gain the attention of hundreds of viewers at one time.

As for being rude and mean - it's not everyone. You just notice it more because on the internet you hear everyone's opinion.

Go to a restaurant. Listen to the couples eating. You'll hear some talk about how poor the food is - but not to everyone else in the restaurant.
