No goal weight...BF goal is 18%
I don't care what the weight...more muscle means a heavier weight... BF is the culprit that I need to get rid off:-)

^^smart way to approach - in my experience the number is skewed as it's different "optimal" weight depending on muscle and structure. When I was 20 I weighed 145LB, I wore a size 12, and I felt "fat", I was "round" lol. When I was 32 I took up Whitewater kayaking (extreme core and upper body strength) I shifted my focus on strength training and built up a strong physique, my fat % was extremely low. I wore a size 6-8 and weighed 160LB - I was obsessed with the number and thought I still needed to get down to the suggested weight of 135-140LB (I'm 5'7) Now I've gained 80LB and when I think of a goal number, I'd have to say it really depends on what my muscle structure is. I'd rather be 160 -170 and have low body fat and muscle than 140LB just to fit into a number category. I'm planning on losing 70LB

-- I do not think anyone can say if it seems like too much. It's your body and you know it better than we do! :) I think it depends on your build, frame and musculature. I think you should aim for your goal of 180 and if you're not satisfied then you can keep going. But it seems like you're doing fantastically so far and I'm sure you'll keep it up!

^^This!! You are such a wonderfully positive person! :)

I have a small frame and an kind of an apple shape, so I store everything in my belly. It's funny how much bigger I look than people who post a higher weight. Frame (and muscle) really makes all the difference.

Hour glass shape so a lot of weight in my boobs and hips! I don't mind being curvy as long as I'm also toned. Also - I really want to weigh less than my 6'2" 154lb (male) friend...yes he is a beampole but he also has 7 inches on me!

Medium Frame, didn't really have a figure to speak of until I had kids. Now I have hips, thighs, butt...however the boobs really have always passed me by! LOL Thank goodness for Victoria Secret!

My goal really is to feel great and be fit. If that happens at 140lbs that's fine too!

    Feel free to add me!

As part of my company employee wellness program, I also had my BF measured. Currently it's, 30% even at 140 with all the cardio I do. But that's just it, I haven't been building muscle and probably have been losing it. Even though it's not my favorite way to work out, I'm making myself go to body pump classes. Ladies, we HAVE to lift and keep our BF low. The dietitians said to shoot for 20% to 25% as a healthy range.

Keep up the good work everyone!

  • Hi!
I just started REALLY using MFP about two weeks ago.
I am 5'8 and currently weigh 159 pounds. My goal weight is 135.

I currently eat 1200 calories a day and exercise off about 700 calories daily. My uncle is a fitness trainer and says NOT to eat those calories back that I burn, but that only nets to 500 calories a day which is ridiculous. Everyone else on here is saying I'll go into "starvation mode" if I don't eat more. But doesn't eating back calories defeat the purpose of exercising? I'm a little torn on what to do. Any advice?

    Thanks :)

    I'm 5"8, so pretty close.
    SW: 147
    CW: 133
GW: 125-130 (I wouldn't even mind if it is a bit higher, I just want to be all muscle!)

I've been stuck in this plateau for months, I just want to start losing this last bit of late however it is stubborn. :(
  • It DOES defeat the purpose! The thing is, even though you burn of 700 calories, you don't necessarily burn those that you ate that day. You're burning storage. unless you're very underweight. So even if your net is around 500, you still ate 1200 calories a day, and that shouldn't put you in starvation mode :)
    Good luck! x

That goes against everything else I read, but I am looking to build muscle and tone up. Someone below mentioned you will use stored energy but eventually that "stored" energy will run out if you do the math. Striving for a well rounded diet now, while you exercise will help you keep the extra pounds off. You won't be able to maintain a 500 calorie diet if you didn't exercise. Research is your best bet. Everyone is different and it will take trial and error to find what diet-exercise balance works for you. Good Luck!!

I started out aiming for 130, but now I'm thinking I might eventually aim for about 125. I have a relatively small frame and I'm definitely pear shaped.
