Sorry, meant to add, I live in a very remote area, so I buy most of my foods at Safeway, and a small local grocery store/health food store, and occasionally on-line.

This was a tough question for me. I always have a mental struggle with (1) Cost vs. (2) Health vs. (3) Weight Loss vs. (4) Convenience/Flavor vs. (5) "something my great-grandparents would have bought/grown/hunted & eaten". Those five factors often seem to be at odds. So here's the five I would recommend from my own diet for others to add to theirs if they're switching from the S.A.D. to something healthier:

    avocado
    cottage cheese
    berries
    tuna
    oats

Edit to add: these are available at every grocery store in my area, if you're willing to pay for it (maybe only frozen berries and canned tuna at some stores, though, instead of fresh)

    Avocados
    Carrots/Cauliflower
    Yogurt
Mini Carrot Muffins (great little snack at 75 calories, helps me not feel tempted to cheat)
Mini Whole Wheat Pitas (to make easy low cal "pizzas")

And coffee, but that's not a food. :P

    All from Fortino's.

Fresh or frozen fruit and veggies makes up the majority of my food. Otherwise:

    Lean Protein:
    Egg Beaters
    Low Fat Cottage Cheese
    Fat Free Greek Yogurt
Frozen Chicken Breast (comes in a big bag at most grocery stores, the store brand is usually very economical)

    Healthy Fat:
    Olive Oil
    Raw Nuts
    Avocado

    Carbs:
    Brown Rice
    Steel Cut Oats
    Dried Beans

    1) water (not really a food)
    2) chicken
    3) eggs
    4) spinach
    5) broccoli

It was tough to narrow down to five foods honestly. Chicken is interchangable with any lean protein meat. Spinach and broccoli can be any dark green veggie. I use eggs because its cheap and a good protein source. Water is essensial and it's extremely rare that people drink enough water. Water is meant by it's purest form, not Crystal Light, Koolade, or iced tea.

    Coffee.

If I don't start with that, no other decisions I make will be of value.
