Are you "unfiltered"?

I have noticed (in all my wisdom) that when I see all the cute little anecdotes on FaceBook and other places about how someone is "unfiltered" that they are bragging about it. Oh, I'm not a bicch, I'm just unfiltered. I say what I think, blah blah blah. But really, doesn't that just mean your rude, disrespectful and don't think about anyone other than yourself? Are YOU unfiltered? Why? Did you not get enough hugs as a child? Let's hear about it.

I associate "unfiltered" more with brutal honesty, but even that can be delivered tactfully.

Oh, I'm not a bicch, I'm just unfiltered.

anyone who says that, IS a bicch
  • I just call it "brutal honesty"
  • Saying what's on your mind is no excuse for being rude. I have no problem communicating my emotions - regardless of what they are - without being rude or insulting.

I'm so abrasive in my fight against ignorance that staff would nuke me in 3 posts if I went unfiltered.

My theory is if you have to start a sentance with "I'm not a b*tch but........." then, you are a b*tch.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Myself, I've got enough of a filter to make most people think that I'm really nice.

As I have had issues with mine today. I take offense at this! But then again, I can be an *kitten*, and you are all supposed to only tell me how awesome I am. Have you not read the terms of the site yet?

Actually, unfiltered is the exact word I use on the sub-title of my personal blog.

I used it on purpose, because, compared to my other blog, which is about building a small business from the bottom up? The tone is different.

In the business blog, I'm politically correct and overly polite in my writing, much as I would be at the day job.

I do drop some cuss words in my personal blog, which a lot of people might find offensive, so I kinda put that "unfiltered" in the subtitled as sort of a warning.

I think you nailed it. Society demands that we "filter" ourselves. Even these "unfiltered" types are still filtering. They're not walking around nude are they? Because society demands that we clothe ourselves (okay, it's February and freezing, and that may have something to do with it. Still.) These unfiltered folks still look to compliment the people they care about (or want something from). Everything that is said and everything we project into the world goes through our own personal filter. People with Asperger's Syndrome suffer from not being able to filter correctly, and this is a mental disorder. No one chooses to be "unfiltered". They choose to be rude, or condescending, or whatever. But not unfiltered.

Bingo. I file myself under the "brutally honest, but (mostly) tactful" category.

Agreed. Some people don't care and just say cause we'll that's how they are.

    ^^^ LOL ^^^

That is like when the girls in the office start a sentence with, "I don't mean any harm, but..." then out come the claws, and there usually IS harm...

I'll be the first person to tell you I can be a real b*tch. I'm not stuck on that setting, however...it comes and goes.

Honesty doesn't have to be brutal to be spoken. I have learned to stop before I speak and ask myself "Is it true? Is it kind? Is it helpful?" And if not, I try to just shut up.

To me, "unfiltered " shows laziness and a lack of impulse control. It's so easy to forget that our opinion doesn't really matter.

(And it's not lost on me that that is my opinion.)

I'm filtered. If I were coffee, I'd come out clear.

Best to not share with people what I think sometimes.

And funny how those that say this are the first to get butt hurt when I return the brutal honesty favor . . .

A little tact goes a long way.

I think theres a lack of understanding when it comes to vocabulary (this coming from somebody who speaks english as his 4th language mind you)

People say "I'm sarcastic" and then what they say are the most idiotic and most blatant insults. Wittiness never comes out of their mouth.

Then there are people who you're talking about. The "oh I'm just keeping it real". I think they're just keeping it real alright. Keeping it real dumb. Now if you stand up to a parent who's verbally/physically abusing their child or basically voice against any injustice, even though the convention is to stay out of it, then yes, you're keeping it unfiltered. And I respect that. But a lot of times, you're just a dumb b**** who should be finding other ways to use their mouth to please others (and possibly make some money too!)

    Filtration is akin to refinement.

So when someone says they are unfiltered, they are essentially saying they are unrefined.

They are unrefined and they know it. They could strive toward greater refinement but settle for crass vulgarity.

It's a scandalous state of affairs and reflects rather poorly on our cultural as a whole, if you ask me.

NOTE: This post has been edited to correct typographical errors and to add that I'm so fancy that I poop into a tophat.

    Unfiltered? I wish
I am honest but try to do it in a way that is non abrasive or put it as nicely as possible.

Don't get me wrong, I can be the biggest ***** you have ever seen, but I start out nice :)

    I am honest.

But I don't go out of my way to say things.

Like if my husband did something stupid at work and is telling me about it, I'll listen and nod and be supportive.
BUT if he asks me what I think I might say "yeah, that was really dumb, but what's done is done, time to get past it"

There is being honest, and then there is going out of your way to be a *****, and THOSE people are usually the ones that say "Oh i'm just being honest!"

Bit like that joke with the old guy that pees straight into the kid's pool from the springboard.... "What? Just 'cos I'm being honest?"
