OMG! Home food pump for obesity, medically assisted bulemia?

On the Doctors today, they had a new device which I think is a really bad idea! Basically, a tube is installed into the stomach like a feeding tube, but in reverse. The idea of it is that the obese person can eat all they want of whatever they want & then just pump & suck out the excess. After pumping the stomach out, water is pumped in to decrease the acid. How is this a good plan? It's not like you can selectively suck out only the junk & leave the nutritional stuff. I rather agree with Dr. Travis who said Isn't this just medically-assisted bulemia? Would this ever really be a good idea? How is this possibly healthy?

Seriously...? The very concept is disgusting.0

That is absolutely horrendous. Bypassing the obvious bewilderment with the concept, it wouldn't teach discipline, or force the user to research and learn about nutrition to better themselves. Always trying to take the easy route... disappointing.0

Crazy. And wouldn't work on me anyway. My cravings and binges have to do with brain chemistry. Chemicals in binge foods never reach brain=what's the point?
Or maybe they hope it will teach people to disassociate junk food with the brain buzz it gives you?
Better to teach them to replace that buzz with an exercise buzz instead.0 -
That's just gross!0

My face is all like this: :noway: plus a little more horror and disgust.0

^^ This, I was going to say the same thing.
Great minds think alike!0 -
I was totally disgusted by it. I am surprised any medical professional would recommend or do this.0

That is such absolute mindf***ing madness that I thought this was a joke thread.
ETA: and it breaks my heart what people are willing to do to themselves instead of taking a slow, sane, loving approach to changing their bodies. There's a self-loathing happening there that honestly makes me sad.0 -

I'm sorry to say, this is NOT a joke thread. I couldn't believe when I saw it on the show this morning & I have since Googled it to read more of the awful details. This is already being used. See e.g.,

"One female patient lost 38kg over the course of the 59 weeks she used the system. She "aspirated" after every meal: "the patient uncapped [her] tube, connected a 60 cc syringe and extracted food from her stomach twice. This resulted in a siphon effect, which permitted the subject to freely drain the stomach by allowing the open tube to empty into a bucket."

Ugh! I think I'm about to aspirate my breakfast into the toilet after reading that. Bleh!0 -
Ya its a dumb idea, but sadly the people using it will have wasted money and time before they realize that this isn't the answer and be left even more defeated. I am learning that to lose weight it has to come from a change in habits, and in thinking. The fact that weight loss is big business and makes people alot of money is why things like this are created and so called health professionals endorse it for the same reason.0

That really is gross! I'd rather chew my food, taste it and spit it out than to have my stomach pumped after each meal. Not that I do, just sayin... Whoever invented this needs a good slap in the head.
Then again, if they used clear, plastic tubing, maybe the person would be grossed out by seeing all the food they just ate go by.. idk, it's just gross.0 -
Except you wouldn't have the esophageal damage of vomiting. You could still have the malnutrition though. I've seen a couple of MFP posts about this and I must say I have mixed thoughts on it.
If someone is desperate enough to try this, then I think it is absolutely better than vomiting or laxatives. One reason is less damage to the digestive system, but another is that you would be required to see a doctor. Hopefully it would be used only as a tool in a multi-step process leading to a healthier relationship with food. Though, I'm sure not all doctors will be so scrupulous.0 -
