OMG! Home food pump for obesity, medically assisted bulemia?

So whats the point I think the obese individual with an obvious food addiction will continue to eat they'll be on that machine for hours. Many times the process of digestion and absorption and the release of huge amounts of insulin is what helps to provide the brain with that rush of pleasure hormones it is seeking. I can see this happening though here in the states as soon as it gets FDA approval. You know people would abuse this too. Wouldn't that suck to have a permanent stoma too, yuck!
It's not a stoma, at least normal feeding tubes do not involve a stoma. It's a little port on your belly about the size of a dime. It's flat against the skin and virtually invisible under even tight clothing. As far as aesthetics goes, I think many people would find it as (or more) attractive than rolls of fat.0 -

Hmmmm I thought that was the purpose of PEG or JPEG to create a small stomata into the GI tract for feedings with a port of course to thread the feeding tube into. Am I incorrect is the definition of stoma not a opening into the body cavity? So you think that this method would decrease fat rolls?0 -
I've decided I'm fine with it. If anyone utilizing such a pump has to sit in a room where the walls are plastered with photos of starving children and the TV is constantly doing one of those send money, save a child infomercials.
If they can still dump the contents of their bellies into a bucket and flush it in those surroundings, let them have their bulimia.0 -
That is so horrifying, depressing and sad all at once.
Call me foolish but I'll take the normal way to obtaining the body I want to have...eating right and exercise.0 -

While g-tubes or stomas maybe permanent if needed, they often are not (though those who use tubes permanently sometimes need to have them replaced periodically). I would imagine that for weight loss the tube is meant to be temporary.
Edit: Yes, I think any type of weight loss would reduce fat rolls.
I found a medical definition of "stoma". Under this definition a feeding would not qualify as it is not kept open all the time and is not "mouthlike".
http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/stoma
stoma /sto·ma/ (sto´mah) pl. sto´mas, sto´mata [Gr.] a mouthlike opening, particularly an incised opening which is kept open for drainage or other purposes.sto´mal
Stoma resulting from a descending colostomy.0 -
i knew a girl who used to use her feeding tube (i forget why she had it but was really sick for awhile) as her way of throwing up. she knew she bulimic for doing that, she'd just push around it and what she ate would come out. her mom found out and it was removed.0

Sounds perfect. The Drs make money, the fast food manufacturers don't lose any trade and the obese stop being obese... Until the hole is closed back up at goal weight, the patient finds they haven't learnt how to eat sensibly, they regain all the weight and the cycle begins again.
Economic perpetual motion...0 -

^^^^THIS^^^^ It is really pathetic that we have come to this or that anyone thinks that this solves any problems (other than the problem of less-than-full wallets for docs and junk food manufacturers).0 -
It can save on the food bill. Buy food-chew-swallow-regurgitate like a bird- put in refrigerator. Next meal-eat regurgitated and now predigested shake-regurgitate. Anyone with this device want to experiment on how many regurgitations can be done? (I was fighting hunger pains- no problem now).0

Just no....:noway: :grumble: :mad:0
-
That's horrible. Were they promoting it?0

Just no....:noway: :grumble:
Yes, it is absurdly sad that anyone would consider such a thing.0 -
Imagine doing that on a date....0
-
Well that's gross.0
-
I just hope surgeons are against this and will refuse to allow it :grumble:0

This is not new. It was done a long long time ago but it went away!0

Arent they afraid of an infection? Or it tearing through the skin. I cant see anyone having a normal active lifestyle with that attached to them. And I couldn't imagine falling asleep comfortably with that stuck on my side. I freak out when my shirt crumples up and I can feel it between my skin and the mattress.
Feeding tubes are very safe and the risk of infection is small. Many people live with them for most of their lives for medical reasons, including children. There is very little restriction on activity with one.
My son lived with a gastric feeding tube for about 2 years, for about 9 months prior to that he had a tube in his nose, all for medical issue he was born with that are now resolved.
I can assure you, a normal life can be achieved while having a feeding tube in your belly. It didn't slow him down one single bit. As a matter of fact, it made him soo much healthier and gave us the time to work with our Occupational Therapist in getting him to accept foods orally.
He slept in all sorts of positions even when attached to his pump for over night feeds to get in more calories.
Also, infection rate is LOW. He had 1 the entire time, and even then, it is NOT normal to have one with a G tube. Of course grubby/grabby little hands that like to "fondle" tube sites can cause a pretty good infection. Kids are NOT the cleanest....LOL His 1 infection too about30 days of ABX to clear. He got 10 days, would take about 2 days off and BOOM I could tell it was coming back. Repeat for the 30 days.
That all said, using a feeding tube so that you can just eat whatever you want, that's just plain crazy.
And a pump would not take food OUT it would put food IN.0 -

If someone chose this as the only means to better health, i would not be against it. Plus from everything i have read, it sounds very, very safe with a lower risk of bad effects than some other procedures people are using now.
Why is everyone so against this, many children have acceptable results from a similar procedure, low low harmful effects...and it would be just one more tool to use safely until the person can get a handle on their eating.0 -

Feeding tubes can be used to pump food in or out of the body. Many chronically ill people who have g-tubes long term use it to empty the stomach at times to keep them from vomiting and damaging the esophagus.0 -
Sounds like a bad idea to me. Even if the patient lost weight using this device I am afraid they would be at risk of developing some really unhealthy habits.0

I think I will just stick to eating 30% less. But, that being said. It looks slightly better than having someone remove part of their stomach forever.0
