So I tried it this morning. I couldn't complete it. Not because I wasn't pushing myself (I'm probably one of the most competitive girls out there), but because my lungs just can't take it. My asthma was killing me. My legs were about to give up but I wouldn't let that stop me. It's just the lungs. I mean even the 5 minute jog kills my lungs. But I'm gonna keep at it. Hopefully my lungs will get used to it eventually. That's a great workout though. It took me back to basketball conditioning in high school lol.

Listen to YOUR BODY! You have asthma, this isn't the workout for you if you are hurting and havingtrouble breathing. That's why you especially and anyone morbidly or moderately obese or new to working out and so many other fine points should consult a PROFESSIONAL-those professional should be your family doctor FIRST and then a licensced trainer or instructor. You can often get FREE guidance at your local YMCA or community center. Low impact and and strengthening and conditioning would probably be safer and better for YOUR Body. Not every crazy thing fits EVERYONE. Please don't do more damage than good. You are doing so great that whatever you were doing before was working and I assume you didn't feel like a bomb exploded 3 feet away from you after. :explode:
I just find it frustrating knowing that some advice isn't good advice and could actually cause DAMAGE or SERIOUS injury to a person.
Just a word of advice- safe advice-look at the profiles and see how the person giving you tips has progressed. Some people, in fact have done AMAZING jobs and done it safely and without PAIN. And it wasn't overnight. There is no overnight fix. What you will do is ruin your body doing a crazy high impact workout if you do not have the physical conditioning to do so. That would come after a year or so of eating right, mulitiple workouts, and TRAINING!!!!! PLEASE people THINK! If you just started working out do you think you should be doing a MILITARY style workout? First of fmost people who get into the military are in decent condition BEFORE, they have to pass a physical afterall!!!! A serious strict physical, DUH:noway: so don't think unless you have the six pack and the killer calfs already that this is a workout you should be doing for a week!!!!!!!!!!!
Please be careful everyone and take everyone's advice with a grain of salt, even my own.

Thanks for being so concerned  But I did listen to my body which is why I didn't complete the workout. I guess you have to know me to know what I'm talking about but when I played basketball, I would have asthma attacks all the time. I knew when to tell my coach to take me out because I knew what my body could and could not take. I am now a coach myself and I see my players go through things and I know when to take them out. I completely understand what you're saying. This workout definitely isn't for everyone. Yes, what I've been doing has been working great. But I'm always looking for new workouts to add because I don't want to get bored. I tried it this morning. It was hard. Yes, maybe I'm in denial about not being as fit as I once was. But I'm not giving up. I said I'm gonna keep at it, which to me means that I'll slowly add a little bit every day. I won't rush myself. I know what I can handle. Maybe I'm like the only one, but workouts like these are fun to me. I'm a very competitive person. I'm sorry if I took this a little personal but I've always had people try to handle my asthma for me and nothing they suggest works...even inhalers. The only thing that works for me is slowly getting my lungs stronger by continuing to push myself every day. Sorry for venting a little.

Good work Smilin. As long as you know your limits and are comfortable with them (I assume since you have had Athsma for a long time you have already spoken to doctors and know the limits and consequences to what you are doing) I'm comfortable with what you are doing.

I have to ask, Phatmomma, is this an attack on me and my post? Because it sure looks like it. I mean, you just unloaded on it. I don't easily take offense to things, so I'll wait for a response, but really, you need to clarify.

I think you could have asked me privately. I don't take things personally either. My concern from reading some of your posts (and the feedback both positive and questioning) is that perhaps you seem to take on an authoritative position to most topics. So I am politely disagreeing and stating that I think people should consult professionals BEFORE embarking on a serious workout that could HURT even the most fit person. Which is precisely what happened to me. I worked out all of my life and I pushed it to the max. My parents were very health conscious and my brothers are both physically fit. My eldest a body builder and my middle made the olympic track team and owns a running club-so we grew up pushing the limits. You know no pain no gain. I feel (and this is my opinion although it is backed by research) that you do not have to experience pain or push your body to exhaustion to experience excellent results in physical fitness or in your personal health. I didn't think i had to agree with you to post here:smile:

Dear you misunderstood my post. It was a GENERAL statement and WARNING to anyone with health problems or new to working out or obese to morbidly obese to use caution. I am not trying to manage any aspect of your life and that is a personal issue. I'm simply stating that if a person (ANY PERSON) says their lungs and legs were giving out then whatever you are doing is probably medically unwise. The last thing anyone who is having weight or health issues needs is to htink that anything unsafe is necessary to become better.
I do recognize that you stated you get your lungs better slowly and you like to push yourself.BRAVO:flowerforyou: . I was merely stating that as you do yourself, LISTEN to your own body and that is for ANYONE, not specifically you. Just me or anyone. Pushing doesn't mean hurting. To me it means doing an extra set, or an extra few yards, or that extra 5 minutes, you know. Not screwing up my joints any more than they already are lol. Now that's me venting:mad:

I didn't see any need to ask privately. On your post you stated publicly that
Not every crazy thing fits EVERYONE
    and
I just find it frustrating knowing that some advice isn't good advice and could actually cause DAMAGE or SERIOUS injury to a person.
So I wanted clarification. You have given it, which I thank you for. I don't necessarily agree with all your statements, although I do agree that you don't need to feel pain to see positive results.
If you go back and re-read the original post, you'll see that I never made this out to be the end all, be all. If you don't agree, that's fine, but there is just as much documentation out there about training using military type routines and very intense workouts as there is about less strenuous cardio training. I realize you had a personal tragedy that put's you firmly in the camp against it, but with any strenuous physical activity, there is a risk of injury.

I dare say you mentioned that you politely disagreed. I would like to disagree with that statement, citing the above quotes as examples. I have no problem with disagreement, and in most cases welcome it if it is in a good light, but to imply that this post is "Crazy" and that my advice is "bad" is not polite, IMHO. Saying something like "Wow, this is a very strenuous workout, just remember there are other methods for working out besides this method" or something to that affect would have been fine with me.
As to my comming out with an authoratative position. Fair enough, but if you read more of my posts you will see that most of the time, if there is a question of possible medical complications or physical injury, or even questioning about nutrition and diet that could lead to health issues, I almost always refer the poster to a doctor or physical therapist or certified trainer.

  • Hey dudes,

Tried it again for the second time this week, couldn't do it

My groin is still strained, i'm so anoyed with myself, i'm going to have to take the weekend off and try again Monday :grumble:

I love this work out, i'm just gutted with my recovery time.

Once i'm able to do this twice a week i'll be uber in no time, but as i'm 20 stone and very driven, i certainly need to allow enough time to recover as once i'm in the zone...

    Awesome workout Banks matey!!!

Wish me luck for Monday

This post is a suggestion to those who can do it. Or a great thing to start working toward. It is not forced on anybody. People should know that they need to listen to their bodies and know that they need to talk to their doctors.
All the posts are suggestions, advice, experience, support. They are not you have to go and do it.
This is an awesome workout that works for banks, and many others. You do need to push yourself to the next level to lose the weight.

I'm just getting to read this for the first time today and I love it!!!

I had the most hilarious thought Banks..... I workout at a HUGE college rec center. LIke imagine a super Walmart, make it two stories high and add an olympic size pool in the back and thats it. Anyways, when I walk in the mornings there is usually a good size group of military guys there doing this kind of training (they are in college/military at the same time)
Wouldn't it be hilarious if I just joined in the back of the pack and pretended like I was supposed to be there. Here's all the buff, fit military college guys and the fat old lady in the back!!!

Stoooop that talk! My wife is the same age as you, she does this kind of work out (though not with me). I wish you guys could meet her, she is an inspiration! You know I bet they would be glad to have you. We had a girl ask to join our football practices one year, we welcomed her in (she didn't want to play, she just wanted to get in shape for herself), course she didn't put pads on and hit, but she stayed for a week or so, I never got to talk to her much (I'm sure the coaches would have LOVED that), but we were polite to her and I think she enjoyed it.

Anyway, one thing you can take out of this thread is, it is mega hard on the body, so if you've never done it before but you want to try, work up to it, and by all means, get checked out to make sure your body can handle the stress.

I had an incredible dose of reality last week as my father (63) had a massive heart attack and subsequent triple bypass. He is doing well and is home now recovering.

HE ID NOT CONSULT A DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING HIS EXERCISE PROGRAM!!!! The warning is there for a reason! If you know that you have not lived the healthiest lifestyle (overweight, smoker, couch potato, high cholesterol) PLEASE I BEG YOU - GET YOUR HEART CHECKED!! I saw the results of DENIAL this week and it was not pretty. His cardiologists words to his family were "He dodged a bullet. " He stopped smoking 7 years ago, he is active, he was exercising but it was too little too late, if he had just had the right test he could have avoided a very scary situation.

    thanks for listening!

I am really feeling like some of these posts are so silly. Banks gave us a new workout as a gift. This was no different from someone posting their favorite recipe to share with the group. If someone posts a recipe with onions, and I am allergic to onions, I don't cook that recipe or I leave out the onions. I have yet to see someone freak out because of some crazy recipe. It's a solid and incredible workout for those of us who can do it. It's too tough for others. End of story. We are all adults and you are responsible for what you choose to do with your body, not Banks. If you choose to do it, make it work for you. If you don't or shouldn't do it, then leave those who do enjoy it alone. I for one am grateful. This has been just the fun, new kick I needed to restart my passion. I know I am 28 and fairly fit and it's something I can do without hesitation. This might not be the case for you, easy....don't do it!

    Silly! :noway:

I agree with you jesusgrl. I read over all this last night and was waiting to see how it all turned out. I would hope that when someone reads any of the post on this site they know that it is someone else's opinion and someone else's trail and error. You have to take what you can use. I have seen things on here I don't agree with, but I don't get too involved. We are all different, so we think different, our bodies are different, and in trying out things on this site our bodies will respond different. Remember...We are hear to encourage. I love reading what ALL of you have to say. Happy workout to everyone today!
  • Well, my opinon is that this exersice is awesome, so much so that i now believe my gym sessions are to suppliment my main training, the 'Banks program'

I've not done anything like this for a few years now and of course my first time back to this sort of training will result in me needing to take a longer than normal time to recover. The whole aim of this excersie is to push the bodies limits.

I can't wait for the time when i can do this everyday  give me a month and i'll be there lol

Ohh and Banks I've rubber stamped your program

Thank you guys for the kind words. I appreciate all of it. And yes, this program I put together was meant for people who have already done some workouts and are now at the stage that they feel they can "up the ante" a little. Sometimes people just feel passion about a topic and things can be said that might be read out of context or seem hurtful. I don't pain easilly mentally (I've had enough that something like this saddens me but not for very long), and I'll take this and learn from it.
I won't stop posting because of this, although I may write more specific warnings in the future (that's the learning thing), but I will continue this program, and as a matter of fact, I'm now to the point where I need to start thinking about adding and additional exercise into it (yuck!).

So keep going all (if you enjoy it that is!)! I hope this is the end of the line for the subject matter of the last few posts. I think everything that needed saying was said.

Oh and, phkelley, I'm sorry to hear about your father, I hope he makes a full recovery and is back out there becomming healthy again in no time (under a professional's observation this time I hope:flowerforyou: )

So I switched it up a bit today, did a hybrid of sprinting and slower (but still fast) running on the track for 20 minutes today, and then did 10 minutes on the stairs (not a stairmaster, REAL stairs! LOL, rough stuff), It was too wet on the field. Then I came inside and did a pretty good 15 minute Ab workout with sport ball crunches, reverse sport ball crunches, Oblique crunches, wall squats, and a couple of different plank types.

It was pretty good, got my cardio (did about 500 calories with the sprint/jog), got my quad and calf work (stairs) and got my core work (my abs are killing me, just the perfect amount!). I did shoulders and arms on thursday so I'll do those monday. Wasn't as good as my original routine for my VO2 level (wind), but I think I'm pretty good there now as is. I'm not winded after 3 miles at 8.5 mph, so I think I'm ok with skipping 1 or 2 workouts there.
  • I'm going back at this either tomorrow or Tuesday. I'm going to do this. What I find best about this program is that it is based around short distance. Too often a workout program calls for a few miles, etc. I can't run distance; never could so I became a goalie in everything I did. This program is perfect because it works me hard without the distance.

and I'll be honest, although I understand what phatmomma was saying, I thought it was rude and was pretty offended by the tone, not the content, the tone. It's over for me now, it's dropped.

    Thanks Banks

So I just wanted to update you guys, seasons starting soon, and I'm running in a 5K a week from saturday (my first one in about 12 years, wish me luck). I have been doing modefied versions of this routine 3 times a week, I'm definitely stronger then I was, and I feel faster too. I can no longer become exhausted in the 1 hour by doing my routine (which is awesome), so I cut down the time in between different things, I also added 2 more frog jumps and 2 more sprints (to both sprints) and reduced my jumping jack time a little. I still get pretty winded, but not the way I did when I first started doing it. Hope you guys who are using it are still enjoying it. And please, if you can think of any other good things to throw in, feel free to pop them on here.

And please, if you can think of any other good things to throw in, feel free to pop them on here.

Not that I'm ready for this or anything, but there are always mountain climbers or those ones where you squat, then shoot your legs out behind you in a pushup position, then pull them back to a squat, then stand. Those really hurt!

I'm doing good with the workout you've suggested. I get pretty winded and I can barely walk to my car after the second set of wind sprints! My legs feel like rubber. But after the shower, when I'm sitting at home, it feels wonderful.

I plan on pushing myself extra hard for the next couple of sessions. I feel fatigued, but not falling over fatigued. I slow down tremendously on my second set of sprints. It's like I can't make my legs go any faster, or I'll end up face-down in the dirt!

Any suggestions for how to overcome "rubber-leg" syndrome?

And please, if you can think of any other good things to throw in, feel free to pop them on here.

good luck with your race and im trying this workout in about a half hour so wish me luck!!! and ill let uk how exhausted i am. if i can even make it to the computer.

Hehe, that rubbery leg thing is just how it goes. Eventually, it will feel less and less, and you'll notice you can do the 2nd set almost as fast as the first. When the rubber is just about gone, then you know it's either time to add more stuff, or run a marathon.
