Still think your 1200 or less diet is a good idea?

Here's what I think, and this is just a personal opinion. Feel free to respectfully disagree.
Why make a brand new thread to call out those people eating 1200 or fewer calories a day? Everyone who comes here posting "1200 calories, exercise, doing just what MFP says, no weight loss" should absolutely receive all of your advice. Why? Because they asked for it.
When you make a thread like this you are pointing a finger at every person who visits here saying "You should be doing what we believe you should be doing" at which point I want to point a finger right back and say "Who the **** are you to tell me what I should be doing?"
When someone asks for it, by all means offer your advice freely. I believe it's solid advice for someone who hasn't consulted with their own medical professional. But for heaven's sake stop calling out people who don't want or haven't asked for your advice.0 -
1200 90% of the time is fine for me. im a vegetarian so i eat lots of fruit and veg which keeps me satiated.
im sorry you have to eat lots to lose weight but care to get over the fact that it works for some people if you do it right? :flowerforyou: ttfn
You missed the point. We all could eat at 1200 calories and lose weight. The problem is, what are you losing? Lots of LBM for sure. The other missed point - what kind of body do you want when you're at goal? If you just want a "smaller version of the you today" and don't care about your health, the stress you've put on your body during starvation, or the lack of muscle? Go for it.
As someone just said: Eat more and lift weights. Easy.
Oh here we go the the starvation carp. Those on lower cals can still maintain lean weight by lifting0 -

I'm sure with only about 18 pounds to lose, you can do anything short term. A lot of people on MFP have more than that to lose. Frankly, I don't want to eat just 1200 calories for the rest of my life. I want to eat a normal diet for a person my age and activity level. Ultimately, you're an adult and can choose your path. I started out in my 30s dieting with very low calories. I lost a lot of 20 - 30 pounds over the years. It kept coming back and bringing friends. I've been at this for a year (a record for me) and know that it is working. Go, do your thing. I'll do mine. No worries.0 -
amazing post thank you0

Keep in mind that some of us are eating under 1200 calories per day under the supervision of a doctor. I am and making very good progress.
these people have a degree in MFP, you better abandon whats working for you and let these people dictate what you eat!
LOL now this is funny
However I"m sure most of them mean well, I just think they need to give advice when it's asked for, not come out telling us we're all wrong for our own choices or for following the advice of medical professionals instead of them.0 -
Being that I'm 5 feet nothing tall and down 32 pounds, why yes, I DO think it's a good idea!! Keep up the good work though, scout.
This. I eat TDEE - 20% = 1025 c.0 -

Yes it seems they lose some weight then suddenly think of themselves as nutritionists.0 -

While I'm being all "STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO DO!" I should probably say I've pointed a couple of people involved in the biggest loser contest at work toward checking out the BMR/TDEE formula and this website emphasizing checking out the forums, simply because I know they haven't consulted their doctor and are trying to live on a little bit of nothing.
However this was ONLY after they asked me "How are you doing it?" or "How are you eating every break and still losing weight?"0 -
Six months and 'chronic undereating' I have lost 34lbs and am now 20% body fat.

These are just a few threads I've put in my little "chronic undereaters" scrapbook. It's gotten to the point where I can spot them by thread title alone.
ETA: To make this post a little more useful, have a look at the thread below, to better understand how your calorie target should be set for the best long term success:

No, I still think it is a fantastic idea. I'm 6'3" tall, and for seven months have averaged 1,040 calories a day, under a doctor's and nutritionists' supervision. I couldn't be happier with the results.0

2) you were morbidly obese.
These two factors change the rules entirely.
Amazing work, by the way.0 -
Let's get this straight: for SOME OF US, this is NOT under-eating! Small women who do not have the LUXURY of being able to spend HOURS and HOURS working out, cannot eat more than 1,000 to 1,200 calories a day and expect to lose weight! Now - just mind your own business and we will mind OURS! DANG!
I'm small--I don't spend HOURS and HOURS working out..and I eat 2x 1000 to 1200.0 -

Why are you sorry that other people get to eat lots of calories? I don't get it. I also don't get what's desirable about only eating 1200 calories a day "if I do it right", when I can eat 1850 calories a day. If I do what right? If I eat just right I'll be able to survive on 1200 cals/day without any bad health effects? Why would I want to when i don't have to?
Sorry, I'm confused.
This x 10000000! :flowerforyou:0 -
I 'chronically under-ate' throughout high school. E.g. a normal day:
Bowl of Branflakes for brekkie
3 Pieces of Fruit for lunch
Tuna salad or stuffed pita or stuffed peppers or grilled chicken and veg
I maintained my weight (UK size 10) from age 13-18, even when I had to drop my workouts from 3x 1.5hr sessions at the gym per week to 2x 1 hour sessions via exercise dvd at home.
I went to Uni, literally ate CRAP - Mcdonalds, Subway, Carbs upon carbs upon carbs you name it. And I piled it on. I wasn't mature enough to make smart food decisions by myself.
Maybe it could work for me another way e.g. by eating 1750-1800 cals per day, but I also know the alternative DOES work and I CAN maintain it and still feel satisfied. I've been eating that way again for just over a week and have 1000 times more energy at work and am getting 100 times better sleep. I know that if I had 1800 cals a day to play with I would make the wrong choices.
But yeah, let the hostility begin, this forum has turned into a community of preachers and sarcastic school children.0 -

Ironically you probably fail to see that you are being what you've termed a "sarcastic school child" and/or "preacher" by responding in the way that you did. Why succumb to the temptation of name-calling?0 -

Because that's what these forums have turned into. People are plain out nasty to others who have chosen a different path. Get over it - do your thing and stop jumping on everyone or posting pointless threads that are pointing fingers at a population of MFP's members.0 -

He wasn't pointing fingers, was he? last I checked he posted links to the very threads where people were eating 1200 calories and left it open for all the thread viewers to decide whether this approach is a good idea. Seems obvious from the COPIOUS NUMBER of threads on this very topic of "Why is 1200 calories and X hours of exercising not working?" that the answer is 1200 calories is not advisable for MOST PEOPLE. What's wrong with answering that question before yet another one of those threads is started?0 -

There is a lot of hostility and angry words in this thread. I think that stems from people trying to apply a single principle to everyone. There are so VERY many variables when it comes to nutrition that you just can't do that. What works for one person may not work for others.
I know for a fact what works for me. I am 50 years old and know myself better than anyone.
That doesn't mean that what works for me will work for everyone else. To try to preach about what other people eat is ludicrous and unproductive. And actually sanctimonious.0 -
