It's sure not what I've been using, I'm broken out like mad and I'm 48! There's a law against having wrinkles AND zits!

A couple of years ago I signed up for a website that had consumer reviews. I believe it was called "Makeup Alley." I would go there and search for facial sunscreens.

Aveeno. I'm super acne prone but I swear by it. I use the tinted moisturizer but there are several no tinted SPF 30. Great for sensitive skin,

I also like the nutrogena dry touch, highest spf I can get for this pale and freckled girl when I'm doing outdoor activities.

Philosophy makes a good high spf for daily wear, they have an oil free spf 30 (I get it from Sephora)

I have very light skin also. I have clear skin, but it's oily and spf usually causes a blemish (on my chin). I can barely use moisturizer. But, spf is important!!

I used to have a problem with SPF ingredients until I stopped eating wheat. Don't know why, but my skin went from relatively oily to somewhat dry now. I found a moisturizer that I love and use year round. Got it at the health food store. It has vitamin C in it and there is supposedly some protection factor in vitamin C creams. No problem now.

@onwarddownwar - I bet your hormones are out of whack. Staring at age 40 my hormones went absolutely crazy and I started breaking out *worse* than when I was a teenager. Sooooo upsetting. I did some research (on my own as the derm I saw was no help) and asked my GP for a prescription for spironolactone. Within 1 month I was soooo much clearer! Within 6 months I stopped breaking out. I have been on it for almost 2 years now and very *rarely* have a pimple at all. When I do, it lasts maybe 3 days which is waayyyyy less than the 2 weeks ithey'd hang around before. Go ask your doctor!

To the OP - Due to my previous skin issues, I have always used the Neutrogena oil free/alcohol based spray sunscreens. Doesn't clog pores or cause breakouts.

Every moisturizer/sunscreen I ever used made me break out, except Usana's line of skin care. Love the cleanser and masques too.

I'm really appreciating all these replies, so I can try stuff out and find what works (and is available).

For drugstore brands I would recommend Olay SPF 15 daily moisturizer or Aveeno positively radiant. I have used both as primer under makeup without breakouts, and my skin is breakout prone due to dryness. You could also get foundation with SPF for a little extra protection. For higher end brands, I recommend La Roche Posay hydraphase UV moisturizer and a product by Makeup Artists Choice (probably my favorite online skincare store) - the name of the product escapes me but it is like SPF 46! It goes on very matte and is not even the least bit greasy.

    Great options!

I was using La Roche Posay and that was what caused me to get a blemish and prompted me to post this thread (it's been on ongoing search). But, the videos posted above explained that La Roche Posay makes products for different skin types. Perhaps I got the wrong one and can check to see all the options.

    Thanks for the continued recommendations.

I just want to say that I do not consider my skin to be oily in a negative, dysfunctional, or pathological way. My skin is perfect, and as a result it is not dry and is very well moisturized and supple. But, that means that applying lotions, creams, and especially sunscreen which is intended to be thick and blocking and to leave a film on the skin upsets that perfect balance that my skin has on it's own (especially when out sweating in the hot sun, playing in the dust and dirt and stuff).

I'm 46 and used to think that too :grumble:
A couple years ago I finally went to a dermatologist and was diagnosed with rosacea.
He started me on an oral antibiotic and facial gel.
It has made a difference but I still break out more when I'm sweaty or stressed- which never happens during peri-menopause

I use Elta MD UV Clear. My dermatologist recommended it and I love it! I used it all last summer, I spend a lot of time at the pool, and my face didn't burn once. It doesn't feel like I have anything on my face when I wear it, I wear it year round daily. I get it online.

Just to add what my Dr explained to me. This product has 9% zinc oxide which is a natural sunscreen as opposed to most sunscreens which are chemical sunscreens. She explained that any sunscreen with zinc oxide in is starts protecting your skin as soon as it's applied, where the chemical sunscreens take about an hour before they start protecting your skin. And for having zinc oxide in it, this is a very very light sunscreen and not pasty at all.

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if the sunscreen of your choice won't cause breakouts. They can be adverised as non comedogenic all they want and you can still have a reaction.

If you can get samples... that would be perfect.

Yeah, I agree. They all say non-comedogenic, but they aren't for all skin types.

I've ended up using Vichy. Capitol Soleil, Ultra Fluid, spf 30. I got it from the regular drugstore (in Canada). And it has been working great for me. SPF 30 is really the ideal level to use.

    http://www.en.vichy.ca/Capital-Soleil/Face-Protection/Ultra-fluid-Sun-protection-SPF-30-FAST-DRYING-FORMULA-p950.aspx

This does have a mixture of titanium dioxide and some chemical sunscreens. I know some people have said that chemical sunscreens are not good. I am still unsure on how big the risks are. But, being out in the sun for long periods of time without a good sunscreen is a bigger risk. So, I am using this for now because it works for me. I'll continue to look into the risks and options.

My dermatologist gave me some samples of Cerave. It's a drugstore brand found at Walmart, CVS, Walgreens etc. I like it, they have a day formula with spf and a nighttime one without.
