Exercise equipment from Walmart

Hi all!

I got a $50 gift certificate to Walmart for Mommy's Day! I want to get some equipment or tools to help in my journey. Do you have any suggestions?

I was looking at this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Drive-Medical-Deluxe-Folding-Exercise-Peddler-with-Electronic-Display/12248733
but not sure how great of a work out I'd get.

The only things I currently have are 4lbs weights and a 4lbs kettle bell.

Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks!

They have a fair selection of items. Lots of resistance bands, gloves, jump ropes, weights, HRM's, one of those things that you strap on your arm to put your Ipod/iphone into

How about some really good exercise DVDs? Those are good! Biggest Loser are always good and I hear the walking ones with Leslie Sansone? are good.

Honestly, you might be better off spending that money on something else. Better quality fitness equipment can be found used on craigslist for less money. Why not check it out?

I'm a big fan of the Leslie Sansone videos- they range in difficulty and it's kinda like "hey it's crap weather but I can go for a walk right now." Which is a useful thing some days!

the peddler thing is too one dimensional, IMO.

I'll have to think, and get back to this, the best equipment is something you can use for years,
outlasting the initial excitement re: getting healthy. hopefully useful for the other people in your house too.

Foam roller to stretch IT band and yoga mat? I've never heard of a high end yoga mat or foam roller. Some other stuff at Walmart might be a little iffy in quality, though. Such as their Gold's gym weight lifting belts.

Hmm. I'd like to get fitness equipment but I know I need to find that on craigslist. I have to wait until I have the extra money for that which won't be until June and by that time I might be ready to use that money to join a gym (hubby won't let me join one yet since I joined one a couple of years ago and literally did not go the whole year, sobby).

I do already have 3 different Leslie Sansone DVDs, I love them!

The only thing I could really think of for that price range was maybe heavier weights and a mat of some sort. The resistance bands are nice but I would think since I am lifting weights (albeit small ones now) that would be just the same? I do have all tile floor here so a mat would definitely be easier than doing planks on a pillow

i'm all for the punching bag, especially the standing bag variety. you can transport it and it's cheaper.
    I love ours.

totally understand re: your husband's stance, i'm in the same boat.
I really feel serious this time, but getting a squat rack is no cheap purchase.

in the meantime, there is tons you can make yourself too. like sandbag training.
instructables dot com has tons of ideas on projects for many things, workout equipment being
one of thousands of tutorials you never knew you wanted to learn, but now you do,
many of them from recycled materials or things you can pick up for free.

always heavier weights is good, but prob. not a good idea to buy them brand new, better to get those from CL or goodwill if you can. we've gotten lucky a few times there.

check out convict training, their website is under construction now, but you can check out his you tube videos.
you are your own gym and nerd fitness are also popular, body weight workouts can be really advanced too.

I have some $15 "golds gym" lifting gloves from walmart that have really kept the callouses at bay when I lift freeweights....Im not a metrosexual or anything, but the callouses on my hands were getting out of hand.

I haven't been in a Walmart in years, but they used to have a good amount of exercise clothing.

A yoga mat, some hand weights and a few more DVDs. That way you can get a full workout. That pedal thing looks pretty one dimensional, like someone said.

My husband got me a fancy workout watch. I think it was 40 bucks. I really like it.

I'm looking at getting a rebounder (mini trampoline). I need a yoga mat too and I just bought two 5lb weights & the 30 Day Shred DVD (only $7!), so I guess that's what I'd buy!

I have one of these and love it:

    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Iron-Gym-Total-Body-Workout-Bar/17435150

I only use it for pull-ups. There are cheaper options on their website, too--I don't own them so cannot recommend, but I'm sure they are okay as well.

I don't believe she can do pullups. While it's a good purchase for the future, it's not a good idea for her to purchase now. (I have this one as well, but I got it for $20 without the straps.)

If you don't have a gym membership I would highly suggest:

    A balance ball: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-75-cm-Fitness-Ball/21666175?findingMethod=rr
    Dumbbells: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-40-lb-Vinyl-Dumbbell-Set/21672513
    Yoga Mat: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Shock-Athletic-3mm-Yoga-Mat-24-x-68-Pink-Blossom/15436067
    Running Shoes: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Danksin-Now-Women-s-Gelly-Gel-Running-Sneakers/22224625
(None of these are specific branded requirements, but give you an idea of price.)

You can find a whole host of workout videos online. There is really no need to buy them:
    http://www.fitnessblender.com/
    http://www.freeworkoutsguide.com/
http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD0nBMLdq_KbIK9u-mzpNkA (Has Jillian Michael's 30-day shred and a bunch more.)
    (And many, many more sites.)

Walmart's where I get all my yoga mats for Pilates & my exercise clothes. They have pretty awesome yoga shorts there. I also get all my weights there too.
  • Exercise bands are always a good option. Very useful suckers, those.

I genuinely don't think that cardio equipment will help you. Walking outside is far more effective and free.

Try to find some heavier dumbbells - those are versatile and can be used in a lot of compound exercises at home. Lunges, squats, bicep curls, deltoid lifts.

Another vote for dumb bells - it really doesn't matter that much where you get them.

and here is a vote against self appointed grammar police - get over yourself!

You are correct, sir  Trying to do a pullup now would be pretty comical to watch.

I love all of your choices, aak. You seriously are the best. You even went as far as picking me out girl stuff :flowerforyou: I love the pink blossom mat. I also REALLY like that dumbbell set! Checking for availability now on those two things and heading to the store very soon or I will just order them if they don't have them local.

I notice you suggested a balance ball. I have seen these for years but have never tried one. I kind of always assumed I'd fall off lol. What good would this do for me? The only thing I have really seen done with them is sitting on one at a desk and laying on one to do sit ups.

    I couldn't do pull-ups a year ago, either. Now I can. Whatevs.

Balance balls are a baffling piece of equipment. I never understood why people bother with them. They remind me of those 80's aerobics videos where people would just make up exercises.

Balance balls focus heavily on your stabilizer muscles. A very excellent tool for strengthening your core if you're using it right. And yes, you fall off the ball quite frequently when you're starting. Just make sure you're not exercising near sharp objects.

Yeah, but you could just do yoga... more functional and does not require a gigantic, uncollapsible piece of equipment.

What a great gift! I say treat yourself to something special, workout clothes or some such. Then use the rest for other expenses.

They have a big plastic plug you can pull out if you need to deflate it for space purposes. The air goes out in maybe 15-30 seconds.

However, I do agree that Yoga is excellent for your core, flexibility, injury prevention and about a dozen other things. A big blue bouncy ball would be less of a need, but still functional if you're willing to use it properly.
