    2. Get some sun! Pure vitamin D is essential & many are deficient! Skip the sunblock - healthy bodies don't have cancer!

Healthy bodies DO get cancer. Limit the sun exposure and be sure to use sunblock after a limited time in the sun. Also wear sunglasses as you can get melanoma of the eye as well. Take this from a healthcare professional...

Those who get cancer are not healthy in all aspects of life. There must be a deficiency or an imbalance somewhere for the body to allow cancer to take over. The body is very resilient and will continue to heal as long as the environment is correct. Either rest, water, exercise, or nutrition is jacked up. Sunblock contains many chemicals which actually cause cancer so either use an all natural/organic one or just skip it and stay healthy in all aspects of life - this is hard but not impossible once you get the hang of it.

I am not sure what kind of training or teaching your have, but what you are saying is far from the truth. You might need to do some research or talk to a specialist about skin cancer and how it comes about and how it is prevented. I feel if you are a internet research taught novice with no medical training you really should not be guiding people on a subject such as this.

I am not holding a gun to anyones head to do anything I say. This IS just the internet and if someone reads something and follows it without doing their own research then I'm sorry but there are cautions all over this site stating that what you recieve here should not be taken as medical advice. However, I have been to Natural Hygienic doctors who have all agreed that the chemicals in sunscreen do cause cancer. As I stated before if you need to use this because for some reason you spend ungodly amounts of time in the sun and you burn easily then use a product without the chemicals that cause cancer. Its really very simple.

If anyone would like to speak to Dr. Graham, he gives free medical advice. http://www.vegsource.com/talk/raw/ He is a holistic/nutrition doctor and doesn't get money from pharmacutical companies nor does he get money from random procedures such as unneeded surgeries & radiation.

You can also find information here regarding this subject: http://www.rawfoodexplained.com/air-sunshine-and-natural-light/

I guess my thought patterns are a bit different as I don't really believe anything a normal doctor would say. Today's medicine is incredible at putting you back together after an accident or saving mother/child during labor. What they are not good at is preventing disease. We have the highest rates ever of heart disease, cancer, and other terminal illnesses but yet we pour billions of dollars into research. So I look for other answers.

I never said go outside and sit out there all day long until your skin is falling off. If you haven't been in the sun for awhile then you should start with 10 minutes every day and slowly increase that time. You should not be out in the sun all day long. If you become overly hot then listen to your body and retreat to the shade. If you must be out in the sun for longer periods then use a sunscreen without the added chemicals or cover up with clothes or a hat. If you end up burning then it was too long. Someone had mentioned wearing chemicals on the skin or having the sun beat down on your naked skin - well what about chemicals on the skin with the sun heating them up on your naked skin? I personally don't put anything on my skin that I wouldn't eat. The skin is your biggest organ and no different then your stomach or liver or heart. Sunscreen also inhibits the absorbtion of Vitamin D which prevents cancer. Honestly, this is all common knowledge.

I mean come on.....here is a google search for "sunscreen cancer" not a biased search as sunscreen should prevent cancer....well these are regarding sunscreen causing/notpreventing/increasing cancer risks.

It would seem like the majority of the world already has this figured out.

Has anyone read the book from this guy? it sounds good.

I haven't yet although it is on my endless list of books I want to read. Let us know if you check it out...would love to see if he touches on the use of sunscreen (just joking :D ).

Ok so SUCCESS STORIES!! I wanted to share a couple people with you all that have changed my life.

The first one is Jinjee, Storm & their 5 amazing raw children! This was the first story I had read during my first raw journey many years ago. Storm has been a raw vegan for 35+ years and Jinjee has had her struggles but has been raw vegan for 20 years on & off with 5+ consistently. She has had 5 children some raw pregnancies and some not. They have documented so much and have put together first hand accounts and success with raw foods. Jinjee's ebook about raw pregnancy is truly amazing. You can find their main website here http://thegardendiet.com/ and then just click on the link under Jinjee's pic to go to her story....must read for any raw foodist!!

The second one is Freelee!! Freelee's story really lead me into redefining how I thought about food. She follows 80/10/10 low fat raw vegan and never stops glowing! She worked directly with Dr. Graham when she went from gourmet raw to 811. She looks absolutely amazing, extremely athletic, and helps so many people. With this diet she cured chornic digestive problems, candida, and chronic fatigue. You can find her story here http://sweetjuicyfreelee.com/2009/11/18/i-have-lost-28pounds-read-what-it-took-to-get-here-part-1/ (there is a second part just scroll to the very bottom for the link). She also put together 30bananasaday.com

The third is Angela Stokes!! Love this woman! She lost 156lbs on raw foods!! She gained her life back and is a shining star - just look at her! I linked directly to her before & after pics but just go up to the story tab to read her journey. http://www.rawreform.com/content/view/16/30/

To add a guy to the mix we have The Raw Food Trucker, Dave!! Talk about hard situations to pull off the raw food diet! If this man can do it any can! He has lost 178lbs with raw foods and no longer takes meds for diabetes and has cured colon cancer and kidney disease. WOW!! Life regenerator posts his videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/liferegenerator#g/c/C7516B19F319C466

If anyone has another that truly inspires you please share with us all!!

    You inspire me.

Well thank you Ummbinat!! You inspire me as well! Everyone here inspires me because this is no easy task and takes a lot of guys. The journey isn't always easy and sometimes even confusing but its definitely worth every bit of it in the end. You keep me going!

I had a wonderful morning and thought I would share the great post-workout smoothie I enjoyed while I sat outside and watched The Beautiful Truth (amazingly well put together documentary about holistic healing - highly recommend). Anyway here it is:

    Minty Carob Shake
    4 dates, soaked
    1 1/2 cup water
3 cups bananas (frozen for a frosty treat!!)
    1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
    1/4 cup raw carob powder

Blend the water and the dates until smooth. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend well. You may need to add more mint & carob - just depends on your taste - 1/4 was enough for me. This was so delicious and refreshing!!

So the first week is coming to a close....how is everyone doing? What type of challenges have you faced and success have you experienced?

My major challenge would have to be dine outs. Being a pastor's wife, its hard turning down dineout requests. I ordered a salad but the dressing was honey mustard but now i know to order lemons instead. Am not 100% raw,(getting there) but i was successful as getting in more fruits.

This can be a problem for many. The best thing you can do is make the most of it when you do have sunny days. Your body will store the sun's energy. So during the summer get your tail outside!! Stockpile the sun's rays. Even if the sun isn't hitting you directly you can still benefit from being outside during daylight hours - as long as your not in downtown & sucking in all the traffic emmissions. Head to a park even on cloudy days. Or you can move....we are meant to live in tropical climates but I know that is really unrealistic for many. Make sure when you go on vacation you head to sunny destinations.

In my last post...."Everyone here inspires me because this is no easy task and takes a lot of guys". I meant guts not guys - I'm a dork :D

I'm in, I have been eating raw for about 5 days. I have already lost 2 pounds.

Today I had some cereal, banana, veggy salad, yogourt, pecans, and some green juice. Now is cereal and yogourt considered raw food? And what do you eat for proteins?

I'm so happy to have found this challenge.

Dining out is very hard. Try to eat before you go and then get a fruit cup and salad. Many restaurants will even have a veggie side dish such as carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli - just ask for this uncooked. Then I order a salad and throw those veggies on top. Ask about items such as guacamole, salsa, and pico de gallo, these items are made fresh at many restaurants and you can add them to veggies or salads. Ruby Tuesdays has a guacamole platter that is completely fresh and has fresh pico de gallo on it. We order that and I get the salad bar - just throw the guac & pico de gallo on my salad and my husband eats the chips with salsa (thats even vegan!!). Also don't be afraid to take along your own dressing!! I do this all the time. Raw dressing are easy to make....just throw in cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, raw apple cider vinegar, agave nectar, and then what ever else you want: garlic, fresh herbs, hot peppers, nama shoyu (soy sauce), raspberries, mustard seed,...unlimited combinations!! Tuck this away in your purse with some raw sunflower seeds or almonds to top your salad with. No hidden ingredients and harmful additives plus everyone will be intrigued with your homemade dressing!!

I have also made up a dining card that I will give to the waiter and tell them about my diet - they give that to the chef and they usually are very happy to accommidate. Once while vacationing in Hawaii I did this and the chef came out to ask about my meal and diet. He had brought me the biggest most amazing salad I have ever had - completely raw. Its just a pocket size card which explains that I only eat uncooked fresh items, I am requesting a salad made from any of the following and has a list of veggies and fruit most restaurants stock.

Great job Mammakisses!! No most cereal and yogurt isn't raw. You can get both raw but usually only select healthfood stores carry these items this way. You can make your own cereal out of nuts and sprouted grains. There are tons of recipes for this sort of thing at the sites I listed a while back. Raw granola was always at my side when I first transitioned to raw foods.

Protein. First of all if you are getting your amino acids (the body makes protein out of amino acids) from unprocessed uncooked sources then you are going to be able to use all of it. So you don't need as much as other people because the RDA is based on the average person and the majority don't get it from usuable sources. Raw nuts and sprouts are excellent sources. You can sprout quinoa, mung beans, alfalfa seeds, buckwheat, even rice. If they are raw they will sprout. Sprouting lets the seed awaken a magnitude of enzymes. The following are "complete proteins" (contain 8 amino acids): banana, tomatoes, dates, almonds, young coconuts, sunflower seeds, NUTS, quinoa, alfala sprouts, bean sprouts, carrots, broccoli, corn, cabbage.

There have been studies on many different civilizations who eat primarily vegetarian diets with some fish every once in awhile and continue to do hard labor day in and day out (japanese farming districts/tribes in the Pacific). These people consume about 15-35 grams of protein a day and flourish. Our RDA is like twice that....strange if they have eaten this way for generations and have no problems. Contrary to what people may say excess protein is harmful, the body can only process so much at once and then it becomes toxic because it raises the levels of nitrogen in the blood (causing chronic fatigue - how many people do you know that eat a lot of meat but are always tired?). Protein poisioning is much more common than protein deficiency.

Personally I have been consuming between 20-30 grams of protein a day. I know I am getting stronger. I wasn't able to do one pull up when I started eating this way and now I can do 2. Only 2 but hey its a huge improvement for me and in a short amount of time.

ideas for meal plans would be a big help to me right now.

Here are some of my all time favorite transitional raw meals...these would be for dinner as for breakfast and lunch you should be having simple fruit meals and maybe a light salad/gazpacho for late lunch. If fruit is not filling you up and you want more than eat more...you need to eat a lot. If you are not doing 100% you should be eating the non raw food last because it makes different acids in your stomach and the digestion takes much longer.

Breakfast: Blender full of bananas & water=banana milk, minty carob shake (listed in previous post), juice of 5-10 large oranges, papaya, pineapple, watermelon (eat half for breakfast & half for lunch)

Lunch: same as breakfast and/or make a fruit gazpacho (tomatoes, cucumber, mango)

    Dinner: Huge salad or....

    -Pesto stuffed mushrooms:
    14 button mushrooms
Pesto: (keep this on hand & use for a variety of meals)
    1 cup walnuts
    1/2 cup pine nuts
    1/4 cup olive oil
    2 cups fresh basil
    3 garlic cloves
    1/2 teaspoon salt
Blend the stuffing up in a food processor and top the mushrooms with it. You can eat just like this or dehydrate for a couple hours to warm them up. Serve with a salad.

    -Pasta
You can cut zuchinni into small strips or if you have a spriralizer you can use that to make noodles. Then either top with the pesto recipe from above or make a marinara sauce.
    Marinara Sauce:
1 1/2 cups blended tomatoes (2-3 medium tomatoes)
    1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons nama shoyu (acceptable soy sauce)
    2 tablespoons chopped yellow onions
3 garlic cloves, peeled (I only used two as I was afraid the taste would be too strong)
    1 cup sun-dried tomato
    1 pinch sea salt
Combine all ingredients in blender or food processor and pour over zuchinni noodles

-Gardenburger - keep a lot fo this on hand and stuff nori, cabbage wraps, mushrooms, use as a spread or dip for veggies or raw crackers
1 cup walnuts (or your favorite nuts)
    2 carrots, chopped
    1/2 medium onion, chopped
1/2 tablespoon raisins (also suggest honey or very ripe bananas)
    1/2 tablespoon oil
1/2 tablespoon poultry seasoning (or other seasoning)
Process the nuts first and then add the rest of the ingredients. Optional ingeredients: dill weed, dried garlic, dried onion, dried parley, nutritional yeast, psyllium husk powder, or ground flaxseeds.

    -Cauliflower Korma:
    Sauce:
    1/2 cup carrot
    1/2 cup onion
    2 tablespoons water
    2 tablespoons mild curry powder
    1 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 cup cashew nuts or almonds (soaked)
    1/4 teaspoon turmeric
    1/4 teaspoon cumin
    1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 chopped tomato
    2 dates
Base: (you can really use any veggies here)
    1/2 head cauliflower
    1/4 cup golden raisin
Process the sauce and pour over the veggies

Make your dressings ahead, put into an old dressing container or jar, and then its easy to throw on a salad anywhere

    Snacks:
    Dates
    Figs
Almond/Date balls - just process almonds & dates together then form into balls & refrigerate until ready to eat
Two amazing juicing recipes to try: apple/carrot & cucumber/coconut

    Energy bars on the go:
    1 small apple, cored
1 cup dates (if using dried be sure to soak)
1/2 cup soaked or sprouted quinoa
    1/4 cup almonds
    1/4 cup ground flax seeds
    1/4 cup hemp seeds
    2 teaspoons cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
    sea salt
Process all ingredients and then form into bars.....you can take these along anywhere - makes about 12 bars.

Just take a day & make the pesto, marinara, salad dressing, energy bars, and almond/date balls and the sauce for the korma or the gardenburgers and store it all in the fridge. Pull out what you want, chop some veggies if need be and you have a weeks worth of food other than your fruit.

Okay so lately I have been having trouble with the raw diet. I'm trying to put together a cookbook full of raw recipes. I can't possibly eat only salad and fruits.

It's hard to be on a raw diet when your husband isn't following it himself. I actually haven't even told him about it since I know he wouldn't understand. Which is why I want lots of recipes so that he doesn't ask too many questions. Once I have some great big results it will be easier to tell him how I did it and how good it makes me feel. And the bonus is that he will end up eating more raw food himself since I'm the cook in this house. haha Eat your salad honey!

These are things that I am either having trouble avoiding or things that I'm craving: coffee, bread and butter, yogourt, cereal, and pasta. Do any of you have any ideas of things to replace these things with? I am replacing my coffee with tea in the morning but when my kids wake up earlier I can't help but take a coffee. Also what to you do instead of a birthday cake? My birthday is next month and I would like to be ready with a raw recipe.

So I looked up some info on sprouting and I am currently trying it with lentil. Hopefully it works well cause I would love to add it to my salad for some protein.

Anyways I'm looking forward to getting more tips and see how everyone else is doing. Have a happy raw day!

The great thing about this time of year is that fruit & veggies are coming into season and are cheaper. So that can be a way of easing your husband into this idea. Just tell him that you saw such and such at cheaper prices than you've seen and they looked delicious so you want to use them. Then when the season changes and your feeling amazing say wow- those fruits & veggies did wonders for my energy and I think I'm going to continue eating tons of them. I have slowly changed my husband's diet from cheesy potato & meat to salads & meatless stirfry (or something like that).

As far as birthday "cakes" you can always go with one of these amazing recipes: (and if your husband questions just say you saw it on this website & it looked delicious and fresh!!)

    cheesecake- wow!:

Fruit tart (simple, amazing & very pretty):

Ice cream to go with your cake:

    Raspberry Ganache Fudge Cake!!

    Chocolate CAKE & vanilla creme!!!
    http://shellyfish.wordpress.com/2008/05/16/raw-flourless-chocolate-cake-vanilla-creme-sauce-frozen-feet/

Your shopping list looks delicious! I'm headed out this weekend for a produce run so I'll share what I get when I return.

Replacement ideas: (once you are getting enough fruit carbs then these cravings should go away) Also think of it more as making new habits instead of a replacement for things you can't have - this will make it a more positive experience!

-coffee - warm lemon water in a mug (very cleansing), banana milk (pure energy), large glass of water (just think of the crash & dehydration coffee does to your body)
-bread and butter - apples with nut butter, raw onion bread, essene bread or mana bread (good for transition), top your bread with some unrefined coconut oil
-yogurt - banana pudding, frozen banana pudding, mango pudding, banana cherry pudding (just blend fruit up with a bit of water)
-cereal - raw granola!!! here is my personal favorite recipe: http://www.recipezaar.com/recipe/raw-granola-427472
-pasta - zuchinni noodles - my last post has a recipe for pesto & marinara for the noodles. Also I have used the meat of a young baby coconut cut into strips for noodles. There is a product out called Kelp Noodles which claims to be raw and many raw foodist use this product. However I think that it is highly processed (they are white/clear and kelp is green...not sure how that happens) BUT this could be a very good transitional food and definitely much better for you than traditional pasta.

Two weeks in! Who's sticking with it? I know I definitely need to stay focused on making time each day to workout - my goal for the last two weeks of the challenge is to do this everyday. I was thinking of maybe setting up a mini challenge for anyone that would like to go for 100% raw for the last few days of the month- anyone interested?

I have not been able to stop in for a while but I am still doing my best to stay raw. Munching on whole almonds and dates right now as I wanted to feel warmer and eat too. It's cool rain here in Canada right now. I need to go shopping again soon as my fresh produce is getting low. This is something like what my grocery list looks like. Please comment on no-no's for a raw food diet if there are any. I am leaving off DH's products for obvious reasons,

local unpasturised honey (only available at the health food store)
    whole almonds
    blanched sliced almonds (raw?)
raw almond butter (or maybe I will make my own with an unrefined oil if you have a suggestion which type of oil would be best let me know)
    pine nuts
sunflower seeds without the shell but no nasty oil (that's hard to find in regular grocers, maybe impossible so I will have to buy at the HF store)
    zucchini
    cucumber
cocktail tomatoes (I find them sweetest)
    baby spinach
mainly baby arugula & baby spinach mix
    baby romaine
    blueberries
    strawberries
frozen fruit (berries or other whichever looks best)
apples (are certain types better? Should I avoid them if I can't get organic?)
    peaches
    pears (which type is best?)
toothpaste without fluoride or alcohol (I better be able to find such, I already buy one without fluoride but I relised it has alcohol in it we don't consume for religious reasons (heath involved))
    red onion
    oranges
watermelon or honeydew melon or both
    raspberries
    raw sugar (is it raw?)
unrefined extra virgin olive oil (to stock up)
    tons of lemons
    limes
lots of bananas (DD, toddler, would eat three a day if I let her all the time)
    pomegranates
    gourmet olives
date molasses/syrup (middle eastern as well as health food store ingredient)
    quinoa
    parsley
    cilantro
    shallots
    ..
I really can't wait to try your muesli recipe I just need to get sunflower seeds and a good almond butter.

Wow thanks. It will take me a few days but I will through all those links.
