Why Limit Dairy?

Hello. I eat alot of dairy as in Greek yogurt 0% fat and 12g carbs per serving and Silluette Yogurt 0% fat 5g per 100gram serving. Tons of yogurt I eat along with cheddar cheese a few times a week. I occassionally eat low fat sour cream too. Why do some people think we should limit our dairy? Am I eating too much dairy?

Some people don't tolerate it well. If it causes you no trouble then its fine. Many people have very good success on a high dairy diet. You can find plenty of evidence for and against it....so my vote, if you like it...eat it :)
  • It doesn't work for some people. I did one of those whole 30 things where you don't have sugar, grains, legumes or dairy.... And I found that it hour dairy I don't poop.... Actually. I ate tons of veggies and tons of healthy meat like fish and chicken. I wouldn't poop for 3 days sometimes.... And I know it wasn't the sugar or grains that made me do that... I find a healthy amount of dairy in my diet keeps me super regular. I'm talking two poops a day.

See what happens when you ask questions regarding preference? You get a response to my poop preference.

Personally, I limit it mostly because I can't tolerate very much dairy. I'm usually ok with yogurt because the bacteria cultures help digest it. I also limit dairy because it's a source of saturated fats and cholesterol, and even at 28 with a pescetarian diet I have high LDL cholesterol (but high HDL too).

I live in Canada, and the Canada's food guide recommends adults to eat 2-3 portions of milk and alternatives (depending on age and gender). One portion is 1 cup of milk, or 1.5 oz of cheese or 3/4 cup of yogurt. I don't see a problem with your eating if it's recommended by Health Canada!

I think because many people have the tolerance problem. I have read that it really is a good source of protein and no reason to limit it unless you have issues with digestion. I eat greek yogurt quite a bit. If your making good choices don't see any problem with it!

I don't eat/drink dairy period. Ever since I found out it was cow breast milk when I was a kid. To me, it just sounds like common sense that a cow's breast milk is for her babies, not for humans.

I"ve only ever felt "weird" about eating deer. Not quite sure why but I could only think about the cute deer jumping over fences and stuff and it tasted odd too.

And I think I have 2-3 servings of dairy a day so i guess that fits into the meal plan for sure. Greek yogurt is heavenly...

I like dairy too, but if I were trying to restrict carbs, I might want to avoid the sugar that is in unsweetened dairy products.

That's how I ended up with lactose intolerance! I stopped drinking it as a kid when I realized where it came from. Now, everyone pays if I drink milk or eat ice cream. Bad news. :explode:

The good news is almond milk and coconut milk are delicious substitutes for us lactose challenged folks, or those of us more ethically minded. (Sorry, cream cheese alone is *the* reason I was never able to be vegan!)

I limit dairy because I find that after a few days without it, I realize how flat and pain-free my belly is. The other day, I made a smoothie with cow milk because I ran out of almond, and got bloated after a couple of hours. That being said, I tolerate goats cheese a lot better than cows cheese.

See how you go without dairy for a couple of weeks, and then reintroduce. Then you'll know how well you digest it.

OP asked why to limit it, not why to consume tons of it.

Yuck. Milk from a bean or a nut might even be worse than from a cow.

I limit my dairy intake because of hormone issues and I get pimples from milk. And, no, organic milk makes no difference because the cows are pregnant while they are producing the milk. I take a supplement instead to get my calcium.

To each their own  And do be honest, I don't drink it straight really ever. I put it in porridge or oatmeal or cold cereal, coffee, tea. And coconut ice cream is heavenly (to me, anyway. My fiance says it "has no *kitten*" compared to the "real deal.")

Do you substitute something for your dairy? Like if you drink coffee, do you use something else as a "creamer"? I take you to don't do any dairy then? (I'm asking purely out of curiosity, not snark).

lol, umm how is "milk" from a bean or nut any different to fruit juice?
So you add a little extra water to it......

I've thought about the whole "why is one mammal drinking the milk produced by another" argument, and I've also thought about the "how come we''re still drinking milk (from ANY critter) far past the age when, as mammals, we're supposed to be weaned from it?!". I'm also quite familiar with the environmental and ethical implications of feedlot farming and dairy operations given that the county where I live is the #1 milk-producing county in our region.

All that said, the truth is, I just don't particularly like the stuff. I've never been a big milk drinker-- even as a kid.And I just never really got the hang of eating yogurt, either. I have friends that eat it by the case. Me? Maybe twice a year. It just doesn't turn me on. I also detest most soups and cream sauces made with a milk or cream base--but again, it's really a taste and texture thing, not an aversion made in the name of deliberately limiting dairy.

I do like a couple of tbsp of skim in my daily coffee, but that's about it as far as my regular milk consumption goes. I also like ice cream and cheese--but avoid large quantities of either simply because they have too many calories.

Because of my love for my fellow human beings... dairy makes me fart. A LOT.

Well in fairness it's mainly milk that does that so I don't drink it. And not drinking milk automatically limits my dairy.

Personally, I hate milk. The only time I consume it is in my coffee if I am out and a dairy alternative isn't available.

At home, I either make my own or buy almond milk. I still don't drink a glass of it, but I use it in cereal or coffee or on the (rare) mac and cheese.

Over all I limit my intake of dairy because I am lactose sensitive. One could argue I became that way because I stopped consuming milk on a regular basis. I love cheese and cream sauces and ice cream, but they don't love me back. Sad for me.
