Why Limit Dairy?

I don't eat/drink dairy period. Ever since I found out it was cow breast milk when I was a kid. To me, it just sounds like common sense that a cow's breast milk is for her babies, not for humans.
That's how I ended up with lactose intolerance! I stopped drinking it as a kid when I realized where it came from. Now, everyone pays if I drink milk or eat ice cream. Bad news. :explode:
The good news is almond milk and coconut milk are delicious substitutes for us lactose challenged folks, or those of us more ethically minded. (Sorry, cream cheese alone is *the* reason I was never able to be vegan!)
Yuck. Milk from a bean or a nut might even be worse than from a cow.
lol, umm how is "milk" from a bean or nut any different to fruit juice?

I restrict it so I can poop... one serving of dairy and I'm backed up for days. To make matters worse, not only am I backed up, but from the moment that slop hits my taste buds, I end up with really bad breath and bad gas. Dairy and I simply aren't on speaking terms... and, well, boobie juice is for babies0

Ok, random factoid- One of the ways they test for lactose intolerance is with a hydrogen breath test. Bacteria that feed off of the un-broken down lactose (a disaccharide sugar) ferment it and produce methane and hydrogen gases, which cause the god-awful farts us lactose-challenged folks get, and bad breath!0 -

Some dairy has a lot of fat and alot of calories from fat, obviously not if you have fat free dairy like you said. Others it makes them sick. I can have greek yogurt barely but beyond that it's not a wise choice for me. I switched to almond milk and vegan cheeses.0

I live in Canada, and the Canada's food guide recommends adults to eat 2-3 portions of milk and alternatives (depending on age and gender). One portion is 1 cup of milk, or 1.5 oz of cheese or 3/4 cup of yogurt. I don't see a problem with your eating if it's recommended by Health Canada! :happy:

Yeah, it's pretty much the dairy industry and recommending this, not so much the government. Meh. I stopped eating dairy a while ago. I find I have more energy and less stomach aches.0 -
I"ve only ever felt "weird" about eating deer. Not quite sure why but I could only think about the cute deer jumping over fences and stuff and it tasted odd too.
And I think I have 2-3 servings of dairy a day so i guess that fits into the meal plan for sure. Greek yogurt is heavenly...
I have eaten deer and it was very lean and tasty.
I don't tolerate dairy very well when it is millk or yogurt. I feel bloated from those for hours. Great for staying in my calorie goals but now so great for my stomach. I don't eat much cheese unless it is on pizza or in lasagna. I love cheese though and ice cream. I don't have those very often.0 -

I like fruit flavored whipped cream cheese. I can eat that plain out of the container it is so good.0 -

depends on the type.
It is much better to be breastfed. while correlation does not mean causation there is alot of benefits to being breastmilk fed than formula fed.

To each their own And do be honest, I don't drink it straight really ever. I put it in porridge or oatmeal or cold cereal, coffee, tea. And coconut ice cream is heavenly (to me, anyway. My fiance says it "has no *kitten*" compared to the "real deal.")
Do you substitute something for your dairy? Like if you drink coffee, do you use something else as a "creamer"? I take you to don't do any dairy then? (I'm asking purely out of curiosity, not snark).
I use whey mixed into almond milk...three scoops of Tera'swhey Grass-Fed Organic Whey and a little less than 1/4 cup of almond milk in my Magic Bullet for a second, gives my 15 oz cup o' joe a luxurious creamy taste and 34 g of protein each morning. I also add a teaspoon of extra virgin, cold pressed coconut oil to it. It is so yummy and an actual benefit to my food goals, as opposed to being a guilty pleasure or "cheat".
EDIT: Had to re-read the question I quoted. I see you were looking for *non-dairy* ideas. Sorry that I suggested whey, but I just really love it.0 -
Hello. I eat alot of dairy as in Greek yogurt 0% fat and 12g carbs per serving and Silluette Yogurt 0% fat 5g per 100gram serving. Tons of yogurt I eat along with cheddar cheese a few times a week. I occassionally eat low fat sour cream too. Why do some people think we should limit our dairy? Am I eating too much dairy?
Ah yes, that fat free zone. You eat a lot of chemical thickeners too. Tasty!
No reason to limit dairy unless you are:
1. Lactose Intolerant
2. a PETA member
3. Strict Vegan (Why would you do that?!)
That's it. Some people think it should be limited because it can be a significant source of empty, sugar carbs. Which is primarily the problem with the non and lowfat versions. Additionally, many of them are bereft of any beneficial flora. Drink raw, drink live stuff, don't worry about it, and go be awesome.0 -

depending on the time of the day that I eat it, I get excruciating stomach pains. It's not worth the pain0

Honestly, whey wouldn't be an issue for me because it's derived from dairy (lactose is my problem lol), but I'm just not a fan of protein powders. The coconut oil sounds good. I already use that (mostly on my skin, but I've started eating it too -today actually haha). I'm really interested in finding a truly *good* lactose-free cheese that doesn't taste like plastic. Even vegan would be great. It's just too expensive for trial and error, and honestly it's usually more error.. :sick:0 -
I eat a lot of yogurt and cheese. Don't see any reason whatever not to do so.0

Because my entire digestive tract becomes the epicenter of violence and brutality when I eat it. I can handle most medium to hard cheeses and Greek yogurt, though. I just don't have a desire to eat it all the time.0

I limit my dairy intake primarily because it's very calorie dense unless you're doing low fat/no fat...which is just a waste of time and money IMHO. If you're going to do dairy, do it right and enjoy all the flavorful fat..but I have to limit it to avoid turning back into a big fat *kitten*.
I used to drink about 1/2 gallon of whole milk per day and 1/2 Lb of good sharp cheddar cheese just for a snack.0
