It is an erotica... it's basically book porn... so yeah plot? sucks... but really when watching actual porn do you expect amazing acting and a super intense plot? no, well it's the same with Erotica books... Either way I'm an avid reader of Erotica and many other types of books from very well known writers and I really liked the series. Compare it to many other erotica's... it was great! Compare it to some Danielle Steel, Jackie Collins, Stephen King etc... sucks!! People need to compare it to other books from the same genre...
I would guess that most people who dislike this book and say bad things about it, don't read Erotica books, ever. Then they go and compare them to the books you mentioned.
That may be the case with some people who were not aware that it is erotica. However, I like erotica. I have read erotica on free sites on the internet that was better than the couple of paragraphs of this book that I tried to slog through...I also have a friend who writes stuff and posts it on fanfiction.net--her stuff is WAY better than this!0 -
I haven't literally laughed out loud that hard in a long time.0

Life is too short to read ****ty books.0

Hilarious!!
It sucked. I'm embarrassed that I read it. The "oh my"s made me want to stab my eye.
I was annoyed by the "oh my's" and all the inner goddess references.0 -
lol it's cracking me up reading this thread. I can't believe so many people are so angry about a stupid book. LOL I hope you guys know you're only making more people want to read it out of curiosity. I really wish people would put their anger, time, and energy into ranting about something that actually matters. This book hasn't hurt anyone. Don't like the book? Don't read it. It's SO SIMPLE!!!!0

I LOVED the first book. Second... was ok, nowhere near as good as the first. The third was even worse, but ok.
Yeah. The whole 'having a plot' part killed the book. And it was WAY more tame than I expected.0 -

So I'm reading that "50shadesofsuck" and I come across this:
"The strands of the flogger skim across my swollen belly at an aching, languorous pace.
Fifty Shades Freed, Epiloge.
chrisitian is flogging anastasia’s pregnant stomach. just wanted to make sure we were all on the same page with that. cool."
What. The. Eff.0 -
I managed a total of five pages of the book before the appalling writing got to me.
This was far better written.
That's how I felt!!! Worst written book ever!0 -

LMFAO!!! Love the video!0 -
I downloaded the free sample from Kindle. Between that and the excerpts I've read elsewhere...I think I'm pretty much cured of any desire to read this book in its entirety.0

I typed in "_____ reads 50 Shades of Grey" in youtube and found the best readings of the book ever.0

*kitten* 50 shades
You want hotness? Read JD Robb's "In Death" series.....good murder mysteries with just enough sex thrown in to make it steamy. And Roark puts Christian Gray to shame...............Irish dudes are way sexy.
True that. Roarke's hot! And even though he's also sexy and a billionaire (which in the case of Christian is a lazy writer's crutch to make people like her unlikable character), he has a great personality and is smart, funny, and supportive.0 -
Every thing she said is how i felt about the book as well.
Me too!!! Thankfully, she is much more eloquent and creative than I am.0 -
I endured the first book of Twilight because of all the hype. Then I endured the first book of Dragon Tattoo because of all the hype. I learned my lesson, and did not succumb to this book. After reading this review, THANK YOU JESUS I didn't. This sounds horrible!
I liked the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but the story arc that happens in Hornets Nest and Played with Fire is superior to 1 by leaps and bounds. But I can absolutely see how the first book might not be enjoyable to some, and how reading the others might not be worth pursuing.0 -

I enjoyed the begining of the book, but then trudged through the middle only to be horribly disappointed by the ending.
And those saying that 50 is erotic ROMANCE - I'm sorry, what? Who wants to be in a romance with a man like this Mr Grey? By what I'm hearing of, he's a freaking psycho. It's like wanting to be in a relationship with Charles Manson. a BDSM relationship, where two people are consentually in one, has kinky sex. There's set rules. But the relationship does NOT make the submissive feel like I'm hearing how Ana comes off in these books. Not to mention the fact that the writer didn't look into BDSM or M/s relationships at all before she wrote it doesn't do anything for me. Hopefully none of the women and men reading this book and thinking this is how M/s relationships are in real life go out looking for their own TRUE M/s relationship, because I'm sure they'll be surprised. There's Masters out there willing to just abuse you, but investing it in fully as a lifestyle takes a bit of research if you're a sm virgin.0 -
I've been in a BDSM relationship and can assure you that 50 Shades isn't one. The writer didn't do any research. So many people are copying this relationship thinking it's BDSM it scares me. Somebody is going to get seriously hurt. And E L James will get seriously sued. She'll need those millions for the lawsuits. And yes, I've read the book. It horrified me.0

OP, I think that half the people that replied to this thread did not read the review that you attached. Good lord, the books were horrible written and the review was freakin hilarious and right on. The word count at the end was the best.
Thanks for posting!
You're probably right, but if just ONE person has had the same joy from reading that review as I did, than I am satisfied. There's a review for each book, but for me, Bert in the beginning is the hands-down best part, and I don't say that lightly *shakes head slowly and seriously*0 -
Hahaha... that review was hilarious!
I haven't read Fifty Shades of Grey; at least not in its entirety. I tried to, but I only made it halfway through before I just couldn't take it anymore. What I read was just awful. Both in writing and the anti-feminist messages strewn throughout. Ana is pathetic; worse than Bella from Twilight. I thought I couldn't find a worse male character after Edward Cullen, but Christian Grey makes Edward Cullen look like boyfriend of the year. I don't understand how women can be falling all over him; he's an abusive stalker who has serious issues. He forces Ana into this relationship that she may or may not want to be involved in using the excuse that she'll like it so it's okay. Um... no, its not okay. Just because she may like it doesn't mean he can do it to her.
I don't know much about BDSM, but I'm pretty sure that what Christan and Ana have is NOT how a BDSM relationship works; at least not a very healthy one. Based on what I've read, it appears that their "relationship" is an abusive one using the guise of being BDSM in order to make all the crap Christian does to Ana okay.
And, it being an Erotic novel is NO excuse for it being poorly written with a complete lack of plot. I've read my fair share of Erotica (free online) and I've read several that were well written and had a good plot that doesn't necessarily revolve around sex. It can be done.
I agree in that I don't think this is a portrayal of a true BDSM relationship, but that it uses BDSM to illustrate the self-esteemless population's wet dream of being SO desired by another person that that person will DO anything. Being desired in that way (no matter how insanely unhealthy and criminal) is appealing because when you have NOTHING inside (self-worth, self-respect, in the case of Ana, brains, etc.) than having someone else seem to be so desirous of you that they will stop at nothing to have you, even if in every other instance they make you feel terrible, is very appealing. If any of this rings a bell for you, I urge you to put down 50 shades and pick up ANY SELF-HELP BOOK that's ever been written because even though 97% of it is garbage, at least the *heart* of it is in the right place...usually.0 -
Read them and loved them. Though I have to admit by about the middle of book three I was craving more of a plot. But overall I really enjoyed them.
I just have one question............Where can I find my own personal Christian Grey?
There are many Christian Greys in prison...just get yourself a pen pal...I'm sure you can change him too!
zing!0 -
 :laugh:Unfortunately, I'm one of those kind of people that, once I start a series, I am incapable of not finishing it. So I'm currently slogging my way through the third installment. At this point, I just skim over the sex scenes. After all, I've read the same scene 5 billion times already.
I do find the "Oh my"s super fun to incorporate into everyday life, though.
He touched my arm, Oh My!
He looked my direction, Oh My!
I ate chocolate, Oh My!
He touched my arm, Oh My! (orgasm - gasp)
He looked my direction, Oh My! (orgasm - gasp)
I ate chocolate, Oh My! (orgasm - gasp)
Don't we all orgasm and gasp if we eat chocolate?
Not me. A good prime rib, maybe...0 -
hahaha yes!0 -
hear its like soft-porn, looking forward to it! I hear its really good!
You've heard wrong. Actually, no, I'm sure you DID hear that, but you were mislead. VERY VERY mislead. Unless you also think scratchy wool on your eyeballs is good, in which case, have at it!0 -
My bookclub read the book! For most of us ,,,it was a FAIL!!! I had to force myself to finish this book! It did get better >250-300 pages in,,, if u can force yourself to keep reading !0

WOW, I thought that this was supposed to be a fun topic, not someplace to be rude!!! Oh well............
Sorry for the confusion--the topic was started by me for people to read the "rude" review of this disgusting book (I can say that as both a writer and a very open-minded woman who formerly had NO self-esteem, just like Ana!!!!!! See what I did there?)0 -
When I read the first one I imagined the writer was the woman in 10 things I hate about you, the secretary and her pulsing member.
allison janney! She made that movie for me!!!0 -
I thought it was a wonderful read, of course I'm talking about the review, the book was a piece of crap. The reviewer is obviously a much more accomplished writer than E. L. James, too bad she's not the one rolling around in her piles of money.
You win the topic!
No, I'm not being sarcastic.0
