Benefits of Giving Up Diet Coke.

Honestly....I think the only difference is diet uses no calorie sweeteners like Equal or NutraSweet. Regular soda uses regular sugar.
Studies have shown that when you eat a low-calorie food that tastes like it has a lot of calories, the body ends up craving what it hasn't received, so your appetite may be stimulated, and cause you to eat more. So indirectly it could cause weight gain I guess if you want to justify it that way.
 Links to studies?

A press release does not constitute a study. Likewise, citing a single study proves nothing.
Most of these studies use a methodology known as Ames testing. Given your reliance on Google (and the internet is full of FUD), it is unlikely you know who Dr. Bruce Ames is, much less that he has repudiated both the methodolgy as faulty, and the uses to which it has been put.
So where would you receive your studies stating the healthiness or unhealthiness of something? Just curious. So for the future I know where to get my research from instead of a College Website.
Couldn't find your actual study just some article
 Here is a real study

I find I feel less gassy/bloated when I limit carbonated beverages in general, so I limit my diet cokes :-)0

I dropped Diet Coke in May, and I feel much better! Now, I am soda free. I don't even want soda at all. Also, my weight loss picked up after I kicked the habit. Artificial sugars do make you crave more sugar.0

A press release may not be a study but there will be SOURCES. I refuse to provide links on MFP anymore. I've done thousands of hours of research into nutrition and health issues. People are capable of doing their own research and coming to their own conclusions. I provide my opinion only, and people are free to take it or leave it. No argument required. If a person loves diet pop and will never give it up, that's their business. When people come on here asking for help, there are always those that try discredit good advice. I don't get it. :huh:0

I drink diet coke, or diet pepsi every weekend. Probably 1 or 2 Litres a week, which is a lot less than before. Eventually I will give it up, but right now it's my vice.0

Thanks for this! I wasn't aware it was that crazy on here about studies and sources! This is my first day on here, I'm not going to lie, I was kind of taken aback by it, why try to tear down another person when they're only trying to help. But oh well Love this post! 0 Love this post! 0

Check this out, they claim to have researched the effects (but it's the internet so who knows how verified this is!) Hope this helps 0 0

Somebody once told me (or I read somewhere) that the carbonation in all 'fizzy' drinks contributes to calcium breakdown in your body. I don't drink milk so I can't afford to lose calcium if it's true! And I prefer not to add the extra sugar and chemicals.
But I still love a good root beer now and then!0

So where would you receive your studies stating the healthiness or unhealthiness of something? Just curious. So for the future I know where to get my research from instead of a College Website.
My main starting points are PubMed and a nutritionist named Alan Aragon, who puts out a regular news letter discussing the most current studies that are being released on nutrition. What I like about Aragon is that he is able to quantify both the good and bad points of the various studies.0

Whenever I drunk diet coke it would increase my appetite, I'd always get so hungry and I dunno why.
Also when I had too much I'd always get dizzy and blurry vision, was like a warm feeling behind the eyes. Didn't read any official studies but just didn't feel right drinking it, so I stopped.0

ah yes, the diet cola is evil thread. very nice.0
-
IDK what the benefit is of quitting either. I drink 1 20 oz a day along with one cup of coffee, then the rest of the time I drink water most of the time. It makes me happy.0

You should give it up because of this: my dad had a feeding tube put in to receive nourishment while he had a bad stomach ulcer. One day the tubing got clogged. He ran hot water through it, nothing. He pushed a scrubber thing in, still clogged. He called the doc and the doc said to put some soda in it. He did and it immediately got unclogged. Yuck.0

I am a Diet Mt Dew fan. I will never give it up completely!!0

agreed on the bathroom trips! I had to give it up to help my bladder. I miss it though!!
I don't know about this....I was an avid Diet coke drinker with little to none water drinker. I now drink 1, maybe 2 diet cokes a week and I think I live in the bathroom ever more so now! (been doing this for 6+ weeks now so I think my body should be used to it by now)
I used to drink a whole lot of Diet Coke, but have tried to restrict it a little.
But since I started drinking 6+ glasses of water every day, I'm wearing a path in the carpet to the bathroom.0

Any kind of soda, may it be diet or not, is full of chemicals and hat is not healthy. Although drinking diet will help you keep your calories low, it wil still cause terrible bloating.0

I quit drinking coke zero last month. I would have leg cramps at night. After about a week of not drinking them leg cramps are gone. I'd have to start drinking them again to see if cramps come back, but I'm not gonna do that.0

I am a CLASSIC COKE drinker, well was! I found that Diet Rite Pure Zero is the best. It doesnt seem as sweet or have the after taste that others have... Uns might give it a shot! But water is a must, I know, I so dont drink enough water myself, I try to put lemon in it, ya know, make lemonaide:happy:laugh:0

Did you know that pop in general is more acidic than vinegar? So for the good of your teeth, try to avoid drinking pop.0
-
I'd recommend giving up *any* cola due to the phosphoric acid in them. (it's what gives them that tart taste) if you knew what it takes to process the phosphate into phosphoric acid to make it safe for human consumption... yeah, I gave them up when I learned. You can google it.
As to the sodium content, not really a lot, at least not in coke or pepsi, something along the lines of 1%, I think.0
