Do all of you distance riders take food along? What do you take?

it all depends on how far i am going and how hard i intend to ride. Less than 40 i just use water more than 40 i do the following. I take in calories on the bike in one of two ways. I either use a drink mix such as Heed to keep a constant trickle of calories going in or i use a gel or shot bloks at preplanned intervals. Typically at 45 minutes apart for me. Also my group rides tend to stop at some point at a country store to allow stragglers to catch up and refill bottles. When we do my go to snack of choice are reese cups and a can of coke. You would not believe the pick me up it can give you! I always thought it was funny watching the pros drink cokes while riding until i tried it.

All that said, you have to find what works for you and what you are able to tolerate. Nothing worse than being 30 miles from home and sick to your stomach....well maybe bonking if your tank runs empty is worse

Hi I just found this thread, funnily enough after coming back from a training ride! Awesome! Bikes are great!.

    Anyway...
For under an hour I don't carry anything, but I make sure I eat/drink when I get back. For longs rides I carry gels, a banana, a granola bar or some cookies. Then I eat protein when I get home.

95KM today! Had a great ride, we are enjoying some sweet fall weather in Northen Alberta.

    Keep spinning folks.

I always have some shot blocks in my bag just in case. Rarely ever use them for anything under 35. I also carry a small bag of peanuts. They seem to really give me a good boost. Maybe sometime I will try dropping the peanuts in some coke see what that does for me:)

Where do you buy Heed? I have looked for it at the big box sport stores and even the LBS but haven't found it yet.

I always take a Gu and a Clif bar on any ride. I find there are times I think I am only going to 5 or 6 miles and I will be out for 20. If I know I will be riding longer, I take a few more Gu and clif bars and also a banana or apple.
