You won't believe how I've lost weight...

It sounds strange, but it's true. I've-
Stopped going to the gym
Started snacking
Started eating dessert most nights.
Why is this working?
I used to "phone it in" at the gym- using the elliptical, not challenging myself really. I got sweaty but not like I do now! Now, I try to do something different everyday- zumba, Turbo Jam at home, bike rides, 30DS.
I eat every few hours instead of starving myself between meals and being ravenous when I did eat and then overeating.
I eat a small dessert at night instead of going to bed hungry, then waking up and overdoing it on cereal in the morning.
I have lost 8 lbs since April, really toned my waist, and I try to login every day to MFP

Great job! You have to do what works for you! Mixing it up keeps boredom at bay!!0
-
Glad that worked for you..
But 8 lbs in 5 months would never keep me motivated to make any sort of change in my life.0 -
I wouldn't believe you but I have followed the same path. I quit the gym where I was reading magazines while on the treadmill, and then I ramped up my workouts with both strengh and cardio exercises. I never starve myself or deem any food to be forbidden, just manage the quality and quantity.
Congrats and continued success to you!0 -

Perhaps I'm reading into this, but this seems a bit rude. You don't know what this person is trying to do. Perhaps 8 lbs is a large percentage of their body weight? Maybe it's the last little bit they needed to lose. If not, it's just good they are up and moving and doing something about it.0 -
I agree, 8 lbs in 5 months is great! As long as the trend is down, the length of time shouldn't matter. The goal is to make this do able forever, year in and year out, not do something extreme we can't keep doing, then it all comes back. Argh. I thought your comment was mean.0

congrats !! i think 8 pounds in 5 months is pretty good. i've only lost 7 pounds since april but i've lost 2 pants sizes since then. i also prefer slow and steady to killing myself with hours of exercise and being constantly in a bad mood, cold and my hair falling out because i'm eating like a bird
anywho, congrats again OP. as long as you're getting the results that YOU want to see then that's all that counts. keep up the good work :happy:0 -
you mean hours of non-challenging cardio aren't the fast ticket to weight loss?0

It is great that it works for you. Kinda slow progress, don't you think? 8LB in 5 months? I just don't know if your "diet" is sustainable and successful. If so, more power to you. But why would you stop working out? I find it pleasure of coming home from a gym. Maybe you doing physical work for a living. But still... Don't you agree you want to keep in shape? We are not getting any younger. Anyway, enough my my rant, and again - glad it worked for you0 -

I'm sorry, but I have to say that I agree, and feel as though it does sound rude  [although I'm not sure if it's intended to be that way, either...]; I sure hope not!! :noway: I think any amount of weight loss is progress and should be commended!!

the OP said"now, I try to do something different everyday- zumba, Turbo Jam at home, bike rides, 30DS. "
so how is that not working out ??
and they also said they toned their stomach, so I take it, the 8 pounds was all they had to lose and now are getitng the toned body they desire"I have lost 8 lbs since April, really toned my waist, and I try to login every day to MFP "0 -

OP did not say she had stopped working out. She has traded boring non challenging cardio for other forms of exercise - cross training etc. And with that kind of program, she will be losing fat and building lean muscle mass. I think her achievement is fantastic.....and most importantly: sustainable.
Well done! :happy:0 -

This is what drives me insane! People who lose 7 lbs & 2 pants sizes whereas I've lost over 40 lbs & am still wearing the same size. I am super happy for people who are making progress, but this is so frustrating =(0 -
It's all about balance and finding what works best for you! Way to go!!!0

i dont get why people are in such a rush to lose weight.
when i first decided to lose weight back in december, there were 3 friends who were going to do it with me. they were all about slashing and burning and getting quick flashy results. all of them have fell off the wagon and gained all the weight back they lost quickly (and then some). meanwhile i've been slow and steady not trying to get crazy results in as short amount of time. as a result i'm now a size 12 (was a 20)
my friends thought a 12-18 month goal was too slow and were going for 4 months. isnt it better to have results after 12 months than to have no results after 12 months?0 -

i think it's going to depend on how you put your weight on. if it makes you feel better i havent lost anything in the 1 main area i wanted to lose :ohwell:0 -
I've lost 20 pounds in about two and a half months doing this. I eat every 2-3 hours generally. I ALWAYS have dessert. (I love Skinny Cow or berries with a bit of whipped cream.) Of course I watch my calories and don't go over my goal, but my goal is 1800 calories per day, more if I workout.
Working out at home as been much more effective than going to the gym. I know everyone is different but I love not needing to leave my house for a workout and being able to push myself in the comfort of my living room.0 -
For me...this isn't just about losing weight. It's also about getting healthier and more active.
I actually do enjoy working out, and I like playing group sports, etc - but I don't work out in public or do those things that I'd love to do at the moment because I'm self-conscious and horribly out of shape. So even if it is "easier" to more manage the foods and cut out the workouts, I wouldn't. Eventually, once I get more in shape, I want to join a gym, work out with people and even participate in group activities But that is my personal thing.
Anyone that can lose weight - no matter the pace or whether or not you work out..and be healthy - I applaud you0 -
Glad that worked for you..
But 8 lbs in 5 months would never keep me motivated to make any sort of change in my life.
When one becomes leaner and has very little spare body fat to lose, 8 lbs in 5 months is a big deal.0 -
Think about it like this, y'all...lose 8 pounds over a few months while not even feeling like you are on a diet?
Or lose 10 lbs in a month trying to stick to an abitrarily low calorie number and be back where you started (plus some) when "life" gets in the way and you find it impossible to stick to so few calories forever? (That was me before.)
I was also one of those slow and steady losers when losing weight, losing about 2 lbs a month, taking almost a year to lose 30 lbs. My last 6 pounds were lost over a five month period...but that equaled a jeans size and my progress pictures in a thong were exactly the results I was hoping for! It works well for some of us!
Congrats, girl! :drinker:0 -
Glad that worked for you..

She only had 17lb to lose in the first place. You really need to put some perspetve on this.
OP: well done for finding something that works for you and that you find more enjoyable.0 -
Glad that worked for you..

I hear ya! I am the same way. I lost 8lobs a month before my wedding 2 years ago and was so disapointed with it.0 -

Like you, don't enjoy the gym, won't go there unless the weather is so bad that it prevents me from running outdoors I do all my exercises at home, at night, after work, after dinner weights, Nike Training, Yoga, Elliptical, Stepper. Do what works for you! And yes, don't deprive yourself of the food you love, the more you deprive yourself, the more you gorge, and seems like you are managing it well. just change what are bad habits, and you will get closer to your goal! Well done and keep it going!0

I agree! And I don't think she was rude at all.0 -
Really? Some of you are criticizing her because shes "only" lost 8 lbs? Get over yourselves, if you bothered to look on her profile you would see that she only had 17 lbs total to lose, so she's halfway there. Not only that, the changes she's making are OBVIOUSLY working. Slow and steady weight loss is PROVEN to have better lasting results that quick weight loss any day.0
-
Congratulations!!! Any weight lose is way better than weight gain....I bet you are more toned, fit into smaller size clothes, and feel great! Keep up the great work! Like the wise people say, "slowly but steadily....it is a lifelong learning process!"0

agreed. good job OP0 -
Well done OP. If you're happy with this (which I would be) then great.
Why do some people treat weight loss as a competitive sport? If OP were moaning about her own lack of progress after these changes then that would be failure.
It's not about, "who can lose the most the quickest". It's best not to compare ourselves to others.0
