The girl with a dragon tattoo by Stieg Larsson is very gripping a thriller :-)

I'm late to this but The Shack by William Paul Young.
Mackenzie Allen Phillips's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.
This book seriously changed my life.0 -

'The Last Lecture' by Randy Pausch
edited to add the "Divergent" series by Veronica Roth. This is a great series for those still "hungover" from Hunger Games. She's only written two of the three books so far though, so take your time - the final book won't be released until sometime next year (I think...).0 -
Since you're a guy and seem like you want a "guy's book" I'llrecommend Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy.
No trilogy.
No recurring characters.
One and done - the entire story is encompassed in one book.
Granted, it's a lengthy book, but it has a multitude of intriguing stories.
It's especially thrilling if you're at all interested in the Cold War.
This is not to say that trilogies or recurring characters are bad (I'd personally recommended both Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series).
I just thought I'd post something different.0 -

The Count of Monte Cristo! A seriously twisted tale of someone who gets royally screwed over and how he settles the score. I have read it in different stages of my life from childhood to adulthood and it is the only book that I can see myself reading several more times in my lifetime.0

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Absolutely.
or, if you're a recovering Catholic, Good Omens (Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett). From my experience, do not read in a library, church, or funeral home - you'll get a lot of glares for laughing out loud.0 -
I am a BIG reader, I could never choose just one! Some of my favorites are:
"The Hiding Place" by Corrie Ten Boom
"The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak
"The Jacket" by Jack London
The Harry Potter series. No joke.
Intensity" and "False Memory" by Dean Koontz0 -
Band of Brothers - Stephen Ambrose or any of his other books. But that one was my favorite. Dan Brown's novels are all a good and easy read. If you like music you can get the biographies of your favorite stars....I loved Clapton's biography.0
