Seeing a lot of rude comments about 1200/cal....

So I'm kinda new here. I made a profile, and filled out my information, and MFP came up with 1200/cal day as my goal. Now I had no idea if that what considered very low, or average, or whatever. But I have been trying to stick with it. And I'm actually finding that I need to make myself eat MORE that I want to just to get to 1200. And I have seen several nasty comments from people on here about "those 1200 calorie people". Why? I have lost 5 pounds so far and I feel really good about my progress. What am I missing? I feel like I'm missing the joke.

Do what works for you, don't waste your time with the "haters". I've noticed lots of women say that MFP figures they should eat 1200 cals a day...hmmm...sounds like its more than a coincidence.0

Maybe they are struggling and it makes them feel better to make others feel worse. Sorry for their comments. We should be encouraging one another. I also have a 1200 calorie diet. Today is my 1st day but not my first time losing weight. This isn't my first rodeo. I hope you keep up the good work, you should be proud of yourself.0

Hi cj, looks like we joined in the same month. I've noticed the comments also and have wondered why ppl think that's too low a goal. Something they don't understand is when we're short (I'm 5'3") we naturally need less calories.0

You're fine. Don't mind the "my way or the highway" people. Do what works for you. None of this crap is an exact and proven science; there are a ton of different roads to walk and everybody's body is different. Good luck on your journey!0

Some people are so stuck on the fear of going into starvation mode that they don't realize everyone is different when it comes to how many calories one should or should not eat to maintain or lose weight. (run on sentence anyone?) You will find there are a lot of judgemental people here, a lot of people who think they know EVERYTHING about nutrition just because they have lost some weight here and there. While they might know what works for them, they fail to see, again, everyone is different.
You will see a lot of people disagree on a LOT of things here. For example, eat back work out calories or not, if starvation mode is real and when it happens, eating too many carbs or too little, eating breakfast or not, some will even say you HAVE to eat a certain thing to lose. It peeves me to no end when someone says "add lean meat" um, what if you don't eat meat?
Stick to your goals and your plan, figure out what works for you. Be open to advice but also don't take it too close to heart and get discouraged if your goals are different than others.0 -
There is some debate as to whether the 1200 calorie diet is too low for some people. It seems regardless what information you put in, if you select that you want to lose 2 lbs per week, MFP sets your goal to 1200. It's generally not considered healthy. Do a search for one of the threads titled something like "In place of a road map 2.0" and it should answer your questions.

CJ -- You'll see a lot of folks on here talk about 'starvation mode' and how going below 1200 kcal a day will put you at risk of that. The research I've seen indicates that going below 1200/day can be done without engaging starvation mode.
In more extreme cases, it seems, a radical reduction in intake combined with low body fat (<10% for women) starvation mode can occur.
Keep your diet balanced and if you feel like you've got pretty good energy you should be alright.0 -
It's sad isn't it that we can't all just support one another? I am also on the 1200 calorie plan...some days I spend my extra (my exercised calories) others...I'm struggling to simply consume 1200 calories. If it's working for you stick with it. I began my journey on May 25th...since then I've lost 29.2 lbs...more importantly, I've gone from a very tight size 12 to a 6! Yes, I'm shocked every time I put on pants with a size 6 on the tag and they fit.
If 1200 calories was too low, this former tub-o would be dying by now...I'm not. I rarely feel like I'm very hungry (unless, I'm approaching snack/meal time). I feel great, in fact!
Keep up the good work. If 1200 is working for you...GREAT! Important thing...keep moving and keep the good going in and the bad coming out.

The thing is that 1200 calories too low for most people, but MFP kind of uses it as the "default" for women who want to lose weight. MFP won't let you set your goals to any lower than 1200, but in reality, the limit should probably be even higher than that. I suggest you go to this website to find out your BMR (basal metabolic rate): http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/bmr/
Your BMR is the amount of calories it takes your body every day just to stay alive. You'll notice it's probably more than 1200. Therefore, you should probably be eating more than 1200; your body needs it!
Congrats on your progress so far! I lost some weight eating at 1200 at first too, before I found out about BMR and stuff. Read around the forums; there's a LOT of information available. After I got educated I started eating more like 1400-1500 calories a day, I lost weight just as fast and was much happier. Good luck!0 -
12,000 is the amount of calories I'm on too--Today I went way over, but generally it is a good number. As you said, more food than you would "normally" eat. I guess what works for one doesn't necessarily work for all, but since what you're doing is working, I would sure keep it up if I were you!0

stick to what is right for you is the best you can do. Some will bash you for 1200 cals..some will bash if you up it and say thats too high...if you feel good and its working for you...keep at it0

Not everyone is "hating". Some are just trying to share their experience. I eat about 1900-2300 calories/day. That's what works for me. I used to eat less, but have had more success with eating more. Everyone has to make their own decisions based on what works for you. For most people 1200 is actually the bare minimum they should be eating and many can comfortably eat more and still lose weight.

Confused. I was set at 1200 myself and I am doing well, thank you. I'm also having issues meeting this goal too; always seem to be under. I actually thought this seemed low for a daily count based on most plans. Ah well, there's always butter and shortening I guess0

Haters gonna hate.
Some people do better with more exercise allowing them to eat more calories and some people do better with eating lower calories. Some people think that their way is the best and thus ONLY true way to lose weight, when in fact everyone is different. If eating 1200 calories is working for you, keep on doing it! Best advice I can give is take all advice found on the forums (including the advice I am giving you now) with a grain of salt.
That being said, I have successfully kept a 1200 calorie diet since January and I've lost over 50 lbs.

I'm suppose to eat 1500 cals a day but I fixed my cal intake to 1200 cals, most days I eat under my goal cals and I feel full with all I eat.
Don't worry about what people be saying or the hating about the 1200 cals. If it works for you then do what you got to do.0 -

i'm also a 1200 calorie person, it it takes a lot of work to eat all those calories. i find myself full and i am not even reaching my 1200 goal. it just goes to show how much bad stuff and excessive calories i was taking in by not watching what i ate. let the haters hate- if it works for you, stick with it! your body will let you know when things are working out right.0

I, too, am one of "those 1200 calorie people." This is simply because 1200/day is the goal that MFP gave me for my height, weight, and weight goal. ( If MFP had calculated 3000, or 2500, or 1450, I would eat that much. I'm not fixated on a certain number) I find that this limit works for me. If, on an occasional day I feel I need to eat a little more, then... well... I do. I have lost 5 lbs and have plenty of energy to exercise while observing this calorie limit. Why the hate? Your guess is as good as mine... I think it's because many people assume that 1200/day is not sufficient to fuel your metabolism without sending you into starvation mode. For some people, this is true. Personally, it works for me. I don't speak for anyone else. I'd just let the nasty comments roll off my back.0

Im not calling people mean. I want the honest truth. I'm new to this. I have no idea what I'm doing. I came here for the same reason as all of you, and want the support of my fellow MFPers. I am not "stuffed" at 1200 by any means. I have a problematic relationship with food, and always have. All I'm asking for is insight. If you think that 1200 is too low, that eventually I will plateau, I want to know this! I want your stories to help me!0
