I would have paid the full amount without thinking about it. Now if my wife was there it would have been an arguement when we got to the car LOL. I would have to hear about kid college bill, car issue, expensive price of organic food blah blah blah lol.

I am honest to a fault and when stuff like that happens I make it right. When I see friends who take advantage of that kind of situation I never truly trust them again. Sure, I'm a friend and they probably wouldn't steal from me, but they do steal and you can't really trust a thief.

You can’t put a price on your integrity. There is no way I would trade it for $50 in free groceries.

Exactly, surprising how many people would.

I would had gotten an associate and paid the full amount. My luck, they would have gotten me at the door questioning my purchase.

I would probably pay the $50, but most of the time I'm not even paying attention at the grocery store, I get what I need, checkout, swipe and I'm out of there! It's usually packed.

I'm honest to a fault. I would have made it right.

I'm actually not shocked or surprised at the number of people who would just swipe and go....

So honest that I thought your topic read "how horny are you?". Lol. I'm tired, have a cold and my Cowboys are losing miserably. Honest mistake :)) dangdarnit!!' oh, and doing the right thing is always the right thing!!! Props!

You win for 'Most Honest'!!! lolz
  • If you did otherwise, it's petty larceny in most U.S. states.

How do you know it was not items on special.

Here in Australia that 3c would have been rounded up to 5c, your just lucky it was not 2c, then I guess under our laws to would have been rounded down to nothing (that being the nearest 5c, well technically that's not 5c..but I guess you follow my logic)

It's what's called a bargain. If I thought that they would miss the $49.95 I might say something otherwise I'd thank my little stars. I mean how many times have you been shortchanged but you only notice later. I'm not the sort to worry about that, so fair's fair in my book.

PS Many of the times I've been shortchanged are at fast food drive thru's. I'm hoping they will have less opportunities in the future

Yes. And me! I'd pay the $50.

I would pay the $50. Many times, if this error is found, it could come out of the cashiers check or ultimatly make her lose her job., Thats a rough price to pay. You did the best thing, your mama did raise a good girl! :)

"Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not."

    Oprah Winfrey

Let's turn this the other way around. If you owed $50 and when you swiped, it deducted $99.97 from your bank account, would you ask the store to correct the error? I'm betting 100% of you would say yes. So why would any of you decide it is ok to steal the $50 worth of groceries and walk out the door?

I don't believe in karma, but I do believe in treating everyone as I want to be treated, and it doesn't matter if it is Walmart or the local deli down the street. Pay what you owe. Nothing more, nothing less.

To those who would pay the three cents I would say one thing. When the mistake is found, it will be linked to your card - they know who you are. Electronic transactions are traceable (that's why here, in France, it is difficult to pay for anything major with untraceable cash). Sorry.

I would have paid the correct amount...I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing I stole from the store...which, technically, that's what I'd be doing if I paid the $0.03 and left.

I would pay the $50. When I was younger and just starting out I might have tip-toed out without mentioning it to anyone. Now I wouldn't think twice. I know that when things like that happen they end up costing us all more in the long run. I can tell you the specific incident in my life that changed my thinking on the subject.

Many years ago I spent three years working as a bank teller. One day I was counting down for lunch and discovered that my till was off by $1800. After a couple hours of carefully going over every receipt I discovered that I had incorrectly keyed in a transaction. A customer had made a deposit of $200 cash into his savings account. I keyed it in as $2000, which accounts for the $1800 difference in my till. I had to contact the customer and ask him to review his receipt for accuracy. If he had said everything was fine and there were no errors I would have been out of a job (the cameras were on a rotation, and there was no video record of the transaction). Thankfully for me he said the transaction listed on his receipt was not accurate, and that his deposit had only been $200. I was then able to have him verify this with my manager and correct the transaction. That situation was kind of a turning point for me. I realized how huge an impact that man could have had on my life. Honesty really is the best policy.

I would 100% pay the 3p and run. It's a dog eat dog world. And I would not have a bad conscience about it either.

Actually surprised how many honest people there are answering this.

It always pays to be honest. Once I was buying an applicance and I paid in cash, the lady gave me too much money back and I brought it to her attention. Well not long after that this lady just happend to come to my hall one Sunday, needless to say I was glad I was honest. You may get away with it but you can't hide it from the one above

I would have done the same as you. Once I was walking to the store, a lady had her purse on the roof of her car and it fell off. I grabbed it, flagged down the next officer I saw since she was long gone. I didn't open her purse at all, just handed it over to a police officer so he could locate her. I didn't want to invade her privacy.

THIS! We can't even compare that story with some old lady who lost her purse...

And, to be honest, i think many people that are here telling "i would do the right thing" would just pay the 3p and run too... ;)

Whenever I use those self-pay stations I am usually in a hurry and not even paying attention...I go on serious autopilot. I might not even have noticed!! and just swiped my card and left. If I had noticed I would have said something. Not just because I am honest like that but because I always use my customer card to to get the savings so the store would have known it was me eventually and got their money anyway.

Whenever a teller or cashier gives me too much money back I always correct them because I know they'll have to eat the cost, or get written up, or even lose their job. I can see how with a machine it might be tempting to say nothing because a person is not being directly affected by the mistake, but still.

AMEN... Completely different situation ... and they won't fire a cashier ...its the self checkout..

back in "the day" stores used to have pride in themselves and would advertise that if it scanned at a lower price, NO MATTER WHAT PRICE, you got the item at that price, now they just scramble to change it and they make you wait while they do it, no pride of ownership anymore. I remember when they used to stand by that instead of trying to screw you for every cent just to increase profits.

I'm situationally honest. I'd pay for the groceries as you did. vending machines are a different beast... those *kitten* are up at least 20 bucks on me if they mischarge or deal out an extra item for free I keep it and grin. :)

Right! I think EVERYONE does this...even the most honest person grins and keeps that extra quarter, or keeps the extra candy bar

To answer your question, I would make sure I paid what I owed...period.

I have gotten too much change back, even as little as 4 cents and given it back. I have also been given back over $60 in change (they thought I gave them a $100) and I've given that back.

I'm not in the business of stealing, whether their mistake or not. It's not mine, therefore I'm not taking it.

    To each their own, though.

Would you stop a hungry man from stealing bread?
I would if I caught him. Between charities, food stamps, etc... there are enough ways to get yourself fed that there is no excuse for stealing. There was no indication in the OP's post that poverty was an issue.

I've had to make the tough choice whether to pay rent or buy groceries a couple of times. I chose rent... and I'm too proud/stupid to go to a food bank or soup kitchen. A day or two of hunger is pretty easy compared to what some folks on this planet face daily.

Luckily for me, I was blessed by having friends who figured out my predicament (I said nothing) and invited me to supper... then sent me home with "left-overs" enough to feed me for a few days until my next paycheck. I've paid that forward often over the years.

I understand completely. I've had MANY low points in my life, including those in which my food supply was scarce. Of course there is no excuse for stealing, but the question was only intended to provoke thought. At the end of the day, which of us is greatly impacted by the hungry thief? I say neither really. In my opinion, the only reason he is stealing is because he's been told "no" everywhere else.

BTW, don't ever be too proud to ask for help!

But back to my original point. Yes, I would take the groceries for 3 cents.
Being too proud to ask was a lesson I needed to learn; it took a couple of tries before I "got" it. There is no shame in admitting you're low. Failing to do something about is the real shame.

Back to the original question, I wouldn't have the groceries if I couldn't afford them... I would have the error corrected.

I would do the honest thing. I was driving away from the local gas station today and saw something on the road. I was in a hurry on my way to a job interview, too, but I quick stopped because it looked like a book. I got out and picked it up, and it was a woman's wallet. It had ID and credit cards and I would guess it had money in, also. I grabbed it and quick drove back to the station and turned it in to them. I know I would be in a panic to find mine back. I walked away much happier than I was before I got my measly $8.00 of gas that I could afford today. :)
Hope you get a good job! If it's not this one, maybe it will be an even better one.
Thank you! I am not sure about that job, but I did get a closer job to my home, so I don't have to drive so far all the time.
