Just for Today

I once heard a very wise person say that she was just one cookie away from being 300 lbs again (she was about 150 lbs at the time). I thought that statement was a little drastic at the time. However, I have come to realize the truth of it. I followed a very rigid eating plan to lose the weight after my 4th child. But when my baby turned one, that piece of birthday cake that I ate quickly turned into 20 lbs gained. I know now that if I don't keep control of the food, it will control me. That being said, I find the thought of eating healthy for the rest of my life to be a little (okay, a lot) daunting. That's why tomorrow has become my best friend. I tell myself that I'm going to eat healthy forever, so I will enjoy one last day of treats today. Unfortunately, today has lasted for several months.
So my new mantra is "For Today". I will not think about eating healthy tomorrow (until tonight when I plan tomorrow's food). I will decide to eat healthy "for Today". When I get through today, I will recommit tomorrow, and the next day and the next. Hopefully, when I've chosen the right enough times, I will forget to have to choose, it will just be my life.

I find I have to do something similar. When I come across brownies or cookies or chocolate that I know I don't have the calories for, I have to tell myself "Just not today"--as in, maybe tomorrow I will have enough calories for that, just not today.0

That's just the point... It's NOT forever it's just for TODAY...
For today I'm going to make the best choices I can even if those choices aren't perfect. I'll worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.0 -
You're right. The thought of eating healthy every day forever is daunting. Most things I have self-control on, though, and I don't lose that control. There are a few things I do lose control on, however, and I have to stay away from those things at all cost.0

This is the perfect way to describe how we have to approach eating. I really think of it as an addiction and taking it one day at a time is a great approach. I love the way you explained this, instead of I will start tomorrow (and then tomorrow never comes) I am doing it just for today! And instead of just for today meaning I am eating crap just for today, it means I am eating healthy just for today, I will think about tomorrow, well, tomorrow.
I think us food addicts totally get this. Thanks for the new mantra.0 -
Very nicely written. It is a nice twist of thought, I am going to steal it and post on my newsfeed as most of my friends stay out of the forums; for their own sanity I imagine, lol.
I generally don't think of eating/living healthy "forever", I look at my baby boys smile and know that I truly want to be more to him than just a memory as he grows up, and that is not going to happen if I continue to dig my own grave with a knife and fork. That realization allows me to make the better decision.
Happy Holidays!0 -
