Women - are you walking or jogging at 4mph?

I don't use equipment, but I use the WATP video at home-supposedly walking, but there's a lot more bounce in my step than that. I used to walk outdoors at 3mph, but that was a while ago. I know we go faster now because it takes less time to get to the same spot, so we have to walk further in the same amount of time. I don't think it's as fast as 4 mph, though. I'm 5'4" also and I think I will be walking at 4 in a few more months. Hubs says my stride has lengthened over the last year or so which could account for it.
Hope I never have to jog properly-it would kill my tired old bones and joints!

Funny...this is a bit disillusioning for me. I'm 5'5", and 3.3 mph is as fast as I can walk. Today I had to slow down and walk longer instead, because I had pain in my lower legs and in my right hip bursa joint. I can't imagine ever getting past 3.5 mph. Granted, I can swim 34 laps (although it takes me about 50 minutes). Anyway, kind of depressing. Almost like I'm not doing anything at all compared to everyone else.
Don't get depressed, everyone has to go at their own pace. You've lost 30 pounds - that tells me you're doing GREAT things. Hang in there and the walking will get easier to get up to a faster pace.0 -
5mph is where jogging starts for me....although 4 is at that awkward in-between stage so I avoid it. I do my fast walk at 3.8 and my jog at 5 and my run at 7.0

Hi! I"m 5'6", and the fastest I feel comfortable walking is around 3.8. If I walk instead of jog at any level faster than that, I feel it in my knees and ankles.0

I have no idea. Haven't been on a treadmill in years. I usually walk outside, at a 3.0 or 3.5mph pace (according to my Fitbit). Will have to try out the treadmill next time I'm at the gym and see where my threshhold is. I'm 4'11" with short legs so don't imagine it's much beyond 4.0, if that.0

I call that "wogging". I can't walk that fast for long, so I have to switch to jogging.0

I'm 5'4" and also cannot walk at 4.0. However, jogging at 4.0 is uncomfortable, like it is way to fast to walk (3.7 is my max), but too slow to jog. I have to be at AT LEAST 4.5 to feel right jogging.0

I started at a gym last week... I walk (holding on) at 5-5.5 on a 3.5-4.5 incline and im only 5'4 I didnt think I was a fast walker till I read this!! :happy:0

5'6 and 4 mph is a very brisk pace for me - if I went faster it would have to be a jog0

I'm just over 5' 2", but with pretty long legs for that height, so even 5mph is still walking for me. Anything above that and I switch to running because it's easier.0

I think it depends on the equipment..?
When I was on vacation and going to the hotels gym I would find myself jogging at 4mph.
At home and using my own treadmill 4 is an absolute crawl.
The machines in question are different sizes and definitely different ages (newer technology Vs. older) but I'm not sure how much those two factors play in the role of speed.
I just do what works for me and mostly ignore the number. If I want to walk, I slow it down. If I want to jog or run, I speed it up.0 -
I'm close to 5'4"... I am currently running between 4.1 and 4.4; walking fast for me is around 3.7-3.8. 4.0 is not a comfortable walking pace for me:-/0

I walk at an incline at 3.6 and sometimes 4.0. I don't jog till I am at 5.5mph.0

5'5" here and wear Vibram-sole shoes. If I lengthen my stride, 4mph is a walk. But I prefer a shorter stride because it's easier on my feet and knees... so 4mph is about where I start a nice easy jog. Walking at 4mph, I heel-strike pretty hard. Jogging at 4mph is sustainable for a few hours.0

I don't walk or jog on a treadmill, so my numbers are just guesses based on how long it takes to finish a known distance route.
I can easily walk at 3.5, 4 is a very brisk walk for me. Jogging is a toss up. I suspect I'm mostly jogging at 4.2 - 4.5 mph. I just started week 6 of C25K, so just starting back into running. Today we (son and I) finished a bit over 2 miles of walk/run intervals in about 25 mins. I've noticed that since I've started jogging, maintaining a brisk walk has gotten so much easier.
I don't worry about speed though. Never have. When I was running a lot more a few years ago (20+ miles a week), speed came naturally as I got stronger. Since I've always focused on distance vs speed, when I feel myself getting faster I slow down and go further instead.
Oh, I'm 5'4" with sadly short legs. If only I'd grown another inch or two!!! ????0 -
I'm 5'5" and I jog at 4 mph & run at 6 mph0

Around that pace is what my trainer call NFL player running !! - he said if a coach tells a player to run laps they run at a pace where it actually becomes easier to run that walk - Once of the well know running coaches - Hal Higdon I think - wrote a great piece about the calorie burn at the cross over point - you can burn more walking than running in that range0

I think it depends on your height/leg length and if you are in a gym incline of the treadmill. I am 5ft 9 and enjoy Powerwalking fulls top. I walk at 4 mph, fast Power walk at 6 mph. I start jogging at 7 mph.0
