go buy her a bottle of fat free ranch.....lol.....

    Bleh; can't recommend it.

The kind by Bolthouse Farms made with greek yogurt is really good, not light tasting at all.

Seems like a "no *kitten* Sherlock" type of realization, but I had assumed they were relatively healthy. The marketing is really misleading. Basically learning that things advertised as "healthy" as very often the opposite of that.

This. So much stiff here you think is healthy, or at least vaguely light, and it's marketed in such a way. You really have to check the ingredients and calories on everything!

Yep, pasta and bread and mayonnaise!
  • I've dieted before, so I had a fair understanding of the calories in the foods that I ate day to day. I DID misunderstand how many calories I needed to maintain.

That's the mistake I made this go-round as well. In the past I'd gained weight from not paying attention to what I was eating, or from not adjusting for my activity level after surgery, and then I lost weight like crazy eating 1800 calories a day. But for whatever reason (age, fibro, who knows?) that's now enough for me to gain, and it was hard coming to terms with the fact that I really needed to eat less than that because I was still gaining at 1800.

As far as what foods were shocking to me, I agree that watermelon was a surprise, and so was pie crust. It seems like the crust is a tiny part of something like a quiche, but calorie-wise, it adds quite a lot!

Have you looked into buying a hot air popper for popcorn?

I've just started seeing them available online in South Africa but I haven't found them in any shops yet. Our postal service is notorious for "losing" packages so I'm waiting to see it in the shops.

I'm going back to the US for a few months in 2013 & I'm excited about the availability of all the things I can't get in SA. :)

Well, she said that she can't find paper bags where she lives (South Africa).

I agree about processed foods with the fat and calories. Also, the variation in different foods among brands. I'm used to the regular box of Annie's macaroni and cheese that we makes for the kids, and then my husband brought home a frozen macaroni and cheese thing that had been on sale at the grocery store. The package had 2 side-dish servings and each serving was 4 times the calories and fat in what we normally use (granted, we buy the whole-grain, not-healthy-but-less-evil kind). Yikes.

Grains in general throw me off. Quinoa is healthy and has lots of good stuff, but a small portion still packs a caloric punch.

I'm sure this has been mentioned: but put the kernels in a brown paper bag and pop into the microwave for 1.5 - 2 minutes. You have to watch it carefully, or it WILL burn. Works like a charm.
  • A frozen coffee from DD with any flavoured syrup...Had one from work last night to keep me awake and then had to look up the nutrition on it to add it here....640 calories! I won't be drinking those anymore. (The only coffee I like too, iced/hot coffee is too bitter for me and adding in skim or flavours and sugar adds up the calories since I have to make those sweet too) QQ

I think I may just be the reverse of most of you. At the height of my ED everything shocked me and was scary. Now no food or drink is off limits...I just don't overdo anything.

Muesli and tortilla wraps! When I started 'eating healthy' but wasn't yet calorie counting I'd have a big bowl of Alpen for breakfast and a ham salad wrap for lunch... then I realised how many calories are in them!!

Caesar salad wraps from Chick-Fil-A I used to work there and man I figured out exactly how I liked the food. But those wraps with caesar dressing is around 800 cals!

Large fries are 520! It's crazy,

Poptarts. Not filling at all, but so calorie-dense. I know they aren't the healthiest thing ever, but it's like 210 calories apiece.

Also, mooncake with yolk. 300 calories per bite, no joke.

Had a family dinner with my "just starting to be a little chunky" 9 yr old niece over the holidays and a funny thing happened.

As I sat down across from her, she examined my plate and then asked me why I didn't have any salad dressing on my salad. I explained that there was only ranch on the table & I can't have ranch. She inquired why, and I told her ranch has too many calories for me. She then exclaimed in a loud, horrified tone "Is Ranch fattening!" I told her that most of it has a lot of calories and it depends on how you want to use them. She moaned then, and said she would always be fat then, because she loves ranch on EVERYTHING! LOL Everyone in hearing laughed, but I was struck by how devastated she seemed.

We are all adults here on MFP, but I can think of a few things that I get a little depressed to know how bad they are for me.
Anyone else have a food that they were shocked to hear the calorie count on???/ I would love to hear the good & the bad!!

taste just like ranch but its WAYYYYY better for you!!!

I completely agree on nuts and granola. I expect dressings and cheeses to be high so no shock there. But crackers, ridiculously high for something baked not fried. They're almost as bad as potato chips! The whole grain isn't as bad but still high in calories and fat. And anything buttery or light in texture like Ritz, forget about it! (Special K makes a whole grain kind that would be a decent substitute for wheat thins but it isn't what I was looking for.)

    My Cobb salad at TGIF...
I seriously thought it was healthier than the burger I wanted.
    Burger doesn't have 1,280 calories though :(

Ranch was probably my big one. I knew it was bad, but I didn't realize it was THAT bad. Same goes for butter and heavy cream. I still use butter and heavy cream very often (several times a day), but I'm much more careful about making room for them and measuring them very precisely.

Mayo also shocked me, but not because of how "bad" it is. I actually thought it was way worse than it actually is.

My almost chubby 7 year old niece looked at my plate piled with salad a few weeks ago, frowned disapprovingly, and asked, "Aunty Melba, are you sure you need all that?"

    Yes, yes I do. Nomnomnomnom.

No, but it made for a nice opportunity to talk about how healthy and low calorie vegetables are. It was a good moment. Even if my adorable niece called me fat :P.

Flour shocked me. I used to make myself many flour based snacks at night, and I thought cutting back on sugar and grease would be good for me calorie-wise. Only after joining MFP did I realize 1/2 cup of White flour is around 220 calories alone! Forbid you add anything else to it.
  • Freakin PopTarts... 200 calories per tart... that is soo not worth it to me. I basically stopped eating cereal a long time ago bc of all the sugar, calories, and lack of protein (had my first bowl in years just the other day bc I was craving it).

We try to eat low fat and good protein.. I gave up alot of yummy breakfast foods b/c that is not how I want to start my day... 1/2 Cup of Low Fat Cottage Cheese and an Apple is perfect... or 2 eggs w/ Feta... Fills me up until lunch!

Butter is actually healthier for you than margerine because it doesn't have the artificial trans fats. Just have to use less.
