If its so bad, why was it such a best seller? I don't get it.

I've thought about reading just for research. But, then I read reviews and I don't want to waste my time. Why do bad reviews and sales not match up?

Peer pressure, media exposure and decline in quality education. Just look at all the people buying Dr. Oz suggested products. Also, take a look at the grammar and spelling on social media sites like this. The book got media attention, so people wanted to see what it was about. Many of them think it's good because they really don't understand quality literature.
You mean, like, VC Andrews books?

Try Harper Lee, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, E.B. White and hell I'd take Stephen King over 50 Shades and most the garbage out now.
What kind of stuff do they write?

If you seriously have to ask that, then your high school English teachers should be working in another field.

I think everyone's comments are funny. BDSM does exist in real life and you can incorporate it into your love life even if its just light hair pulling and spanking. No big deal, some people shouldn't act like it's completely unobtainable. Just ask the person you are with to do it!

I personally read all 3 and loved them and can't wait for the movie.

I followed the same logic that someone else on here had. I read the first 1, might as well read the 2nd, then might as well read the 3rd. I hated Ana and the writing, but I loved Christian after he fell in love with Ana (not enough to want to FIND a Christian Grey, unless he's wealthy and handsome, but ain't nobody got time to be in a relationship with an emotionally damaged man/woman). Although I do find myself loving male characters that are emotionally damaged, such as Christian Grey and Chuck Bass (Gossip Girl); I think that's the nurturer in me...
Same here! I couldn;t wait to see where Christian went with his new emotion of love. I could have cared less about Ana, she annoyed me and was nothing major in my opinion. I was bummed how the final book just sort of blew through Christians developement and ended. Hated it for that reason. Almost like the author was sick of writing and had no desire for his characters without the sex. I'd still probably eventually read them again.

I read them out of curiosity. Couple of scenes were kinda hot-ish, the writing idiotic, and the female character a twit. If I had to read the phrases "my sex" or "my inner goddess" one more GD time, I would have smashed my laptop.

I liked the love story, loved the "empowerment" of Ana. Wasnt really into the domination thing, but I looked over it and loved the story.

He actually kind of got on my nerves with all his emotional hoop-lah. I read the 1st book and just could not get into it, so I didn't read the other 2. I did enjoy how the writer did the whole Ana dialogue with her inner selves. That was funny.

Yes, consensual BDSM exists in real life, but "50 Shades of Grey" is not a good example of a BDSM relationship.

Nobody said that BDSM was bad, just that it was used badly.

My wife read them, and I was the beneficiary.

My HUbby would agree with you! He asked when I planned to read them again!? LOL

My husband asked me the same thing.

lol... I read them all and loved every one of them, #2 was my favorite though. Haters gone hate...

One shade of grey: "No" she said. And he pestered her no more. And since she was obviously extremely attractive and great company she went off and found a guy who was rich and dreamy and capable of a healthy reciprocal relationship.

I like how everyone fawns over the abuser but hates on the victim. Rather telling.

    I read all three.

    I like E.L James.

However, I read 200 books a year of genre's that far exceed the Christian Grey's of characters. I was impressed with book 1 & 2. Book 3, like book 3 of Twilight Saga, the author changed the writing style. It screwed it all up.

The fact that media calls Fifty, "Mommy Porn" annoys me.

The fact that women say such things as, "OMG Christian Grey is so sexy, so this, so that....when will I get my Christian Grey?" The sad thing is there are millions of Christian Grey's out there. Dysfunctional, abusive, self loathing, butffaces. Many of which are NOT excessively rich, though I'm sure having money may shade the Fifty Shades of F***edup.

If you think his "Red Room of Pain" is what you are looking for, well there are many more HEALTHY relationships with sane characters I could refer you to.

Now, srsly. "Who else red 50 Shades of grey?"

"Light hair pulling" and "spanking" is not BDSM.
