Was there a food that you looked up and were shocked at the amount of calories it contained?
For me, it happened last night. I have those little 3 ounce bottles of Bailey's. They are 327 calories for that tiny little bottle. I knew they were bad, but I didn't know how bad... Ouch! But I'm glad I know now!

OK now I know why I gained so much weight over the holidays. Bailey's was a staple, LOL
I had never in the past counted calories until I joined here. I was surprized how many calories are in meat,
even lean meat. Not giving that up though.9 -
Nuts and cheese, love them both but now am careful about how much I have18

Air! Because everything I enjoy eating, I inhale like I am just gulping in air..before I know it, I have inhaled a couple hundred calories!19

Chorizo sausage.
I haven't eaten it since November when the last of my sausage casserole was removed from the freezer!
Using a lot of smoked paprika in other foods though.j3 -
Strawberries! I just entered 1 c fresh strawberries and it is 200 calories!7

8 calories in one tiny hazelnut? (and who eats just one?) Really?7
-
Weirdly flour! I used to think my homemade pizzas were really good cause they were, well, homemade! Then I logged it on mfp and found the base alone to be nearly 400 cals. Then add topping. I used to have two!!15

Avocado14

cranberry juice has the same calories pretty much as coca cola9
-
I have to say nuts and trail mixes.7

Definitely peanut butter!
This, and it makes me so sad, because peanut butter is delicious and healthy. But I can only allow myself a little each day or I'll ruin my calorie goals6 -
Beans. That is a staple in my diet but I definitely take a big hit every meal I eat them.13

Sushi. and not fried either! I was just curious the other day about how many calories were in one Crunchy Shrimp roll, come to find out it was almost 1/2 of my daily intake of cal's I freaked out! How can 1 small roll of Sushi have 500+ Calories??! So upsetting I could eat sushi everyday..7

same here for the homemade pizzas! grrr tip use small tortillas instead! works just as well and 1/8 of the cals!
and bloody nuts of allsorts i love nuts  yes yes in all ways!8 -
Kids' sized Wendy's frosty is 200 calories. It is so small and completely not worth. I will always choose decadent Ice Cream over that!8

Rosy...you need to weigh your food, not put it in by the "cup". And when you use the MFP logs for fresh food, always look up the food with USDA after it. People on here make up the WEIRDEST stuff. But 90% of the time, the ones that say USDA after are more accurate. A cup of strawberries should cost you roughly 100-120 calories, not 200. But it will be based on the density of the strawberries you're eating. I always recommend hulling strawberries because the hull it's dense and doesn't provide many nutrients, so you may think you're eating a ton of calories of strawberries, but you're actually not.38 -
Agree with peanut butter and nuts. Also, certain fruit. I used to eat a lot of grapes, but they add up fast.5

The Stuffed Peppers I made, MFP said 700 + Calories!5

The stuff from fast food restaurants. I don't eat Whoppers at BK or those burgers topped with eggs at Red Robin, but no wonder we have an obesity epidemic!
Two days ago I had an Einstein's bagel and it turned out to be 290 calories, even without a topping. I wont' be eating those very often.4 -

If you get Natural peanut butter, it's so much better for you! It may be a little higher in calories/fat, but if you stick with just a tablespoon or so, it isn't bad at all- it actually has good fat in it!2 -

I recommend a paleo pizza. You use cauliflower for the crust instead of dough. Works like a charm. Unless you do it wrong...then it's soggy.2 -
I definitely agree with the lean meat notion. Even grilled chicken has more calories than I thought. I've definitely learned to pay attention to portion sizes when it comes to my protein. About the strawberries... 200 cal for a cup??? I feel like someone had to have made a mistake when entering it to the database!!! :flowerforyou:5

I just double-checked the database. The actual calories for 1 cup of strawberry halves (fresh) is 49. Did you perhaps get 1 cup mashed (which is much more!)? Or maybe you found one that someone else entered incorrectly.
Anyway, you can breathe easier and enjoy your strawberries :happy:18 -

Katie, great point! I think people get too worried about the calories in some foods. Avocados, nuts and peanuts may be calorically heavy but they provide essential oils and fats that we all need!5 -

Great tip on how to choose the right option. Thanks for that.6 -
I used to eat a "healthy" wrap of egg whites and diced tomato every morning - until I found out the wrap was about 350... add the egg whites, tomato and the coffee and my breakfast was costing me nearly 500 cals - almost half my day's cals.... yikes!7

Honestly?
Most of them.11
