Whey is a type of protein. It is supposed to be "fast acting". Whey is supposed to be good to use for peri-workout nutrition as it is a quick digesting protein. That being said. Much of that is also bro-science. It is not necessary, for most people. I'm not sure where it comes from. I know soy is usually from soy products. Caseine protein is from dairy, and is supposed to be good for night time, as it is the slowest for digestion. There are also a few vegetable based proteins. They each have different benefits, and reasons for use in diet, but most come from natural sources, as well. Protein powders are usually easier to use, convenient, and can be used in meals that to many would taste like a "treat".

  • THIS THREAD RULES. I've been wanting new ideas. I usually do:

    - RAW Protein Chocolate Flavor
    - 1/2 cup almond milk
    - 1/2 - 3/4 frozen banana (sometimes I'll leave this out and use a couple ice cubes instead)
    - 1 tbsp flax meal
    - spoonful of chia seeds
    - 1/2 cup cabot low fat greek yogurt
    - a spoonful or two of peanut or almond butter if i'm in a nut butter mood (which I usually am.)

I want to try mixing in some almond butter and coconut flakes to make a DRINKABLE ALMOND JOY<3

Share your favorite protein shake recipes! I'm looking for new ideas. Here are a couple of my favorites:

    Coffee Coolatta Shake:
1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder (pretty good with vanilla too)
6 oz. unsweetened almond milk, or milk of choice
    3-4 ice cubes
    1 tbsp. nutella
1-2 tsp. instant coffee (to taste)
    SO good!

Peanut Brittle Shake (got this one from bodybuilding.com)
    1 scoop vanilla protein powder
6 oz. unsweetened almond milk, or milk of choice
    3-4 ice cubes
1 tbsp. natural chunky peanut butter
1 tbsp. jello sugar free instant butterscotch pudding mix
I like to mix ice in a blender with a chocolate low carb slimfast, 2 Tbs PB2 (and a small banana unless if you aren't allowed the calories). Extremely good and satisfying, if you omit the banana it tastes like a Reeses shake.
One cup almond milk, unsweetened, vanilla
    One cup frozen strawberries
    One scoop whey protein

    Fast and easy...
I call this my Reece's Protein shake :D

1 teaspoon natural smooth Peanut butter
1/4 cup nestle light and creamy caramel chocolate swirl ice-cream (or whatever low fat, low cal ice-cream you can find)
1 scoop low carb vanilla or chocolate protein powder
    1/2 cup light soy milk
    Crushed ice

    So yummyyyy
Sometimes I add 1/3 of a banana too
    Pumpkin Pie
    1 scoop vanilla protein
1 cup vanilla soy or almond milk
    1/4 cup canned pumpkin
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/4 tsp nutmeg
    couple ice cubes
couple packets sweetener or tsp sugar

    Blend it all up--deelish!
    Green Protein Smoothie

    1/2 C almond milk
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
    1 tbsp peanut butter
    1/2 sliced banana
    2 C baby spinach
    2 C crushed ice

    Mix all in blender- YUMMY!
1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder (or cookies and cream)
    1 cup frozen raspberries
    1 cup water

    Yummy!
    I make this often, it's super nutrient-dense!

    Macaroon Shake

    Chocolate Whey protein powder
    1 tsp flax seeds
    hemp protein powder
    1 raw farm fresh eggwhite
    ice
    cinnamon
    splash of canned coconut milk
    1/8 cup raw grated coconut
    vanilla extract
1 heaping tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
    small pinch stevia
    1 cup spinach
i drink this one every am
1 cup mixed frozen wild berries
    1 scoop whey protein
    one cup soya light vanilla
    1cup non sweeten vanilla yogurt
This is not a smoothie protein shake...but rather just a protein drink...either way it's super good.
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1 packet of any flavor of Crystal Light (the strawberry is my favorite - but I've been trying to reduce my intake of fake sugar so lately I've been using their "Pure" line. No chemicals)
Fill with water to your desired taste - eg: less water = stronger flavor
    Shake and enjoy!
    Low Calorie High Protein! ;-)
    Breakfast shake

    2 tbsp maple syrup
    Scoop vanilla protein
1/2 banana (frozen for thick/ice cream texture--also use 1/2 cup milk)
    1 cup milk
    3-5 ice cubes

Blend. Top with 1/2 cup cereal and eat with spoon.
Great recipes everyone, thanks for sharing! Here's another one I just tried this morning.

    1/2 cup almond milk

1/2 cup canned pineapple chunks (in juice, not syrup) or fresh pineapple
Chunk of banana (I used about 1/3 of a large banana)
    Handful of spinach

I just made this and it was DELISH!!!

    5-6 ice cubes--blend, enjoy

    1 cup unsweetened almond milk

    delicious!

1 scoop triple chocolate whey protein

    1 cup unsweetened almond milk
    2 or 3 ice cubes

    wonderful!
    1 scoop chocolate whey
    2 cups milk
    1/2 cup oats
    1 banana
    2tbsp peanut butter
    lots of ice!

mmm.... too bad this was my mass gainer shake
That peanut brittle shake is awesome but I call it Butterfinger Shake and to cut calories
use 1T of Chocolate PB2 instead of peanut butter. So yummy

1 scoop protein powder I use Vanilla but I think Chocolate would be wonderful
2 T Jello sugar free butterscotch pudding mix
1 C. unsweetened Almond milk (35 cal. in a cup!)
    1 T chocolate PB2
    about 6 ice cubes.

    Blend and enjoy
    1/2 scoop chocolate whey powder
    handful or two of spinach
    one banana
    frozen blueberries
    ...amazing.

Don't know if mine can really be called a shake because you have to eat it with a spoon but...

1 scoop protein powder (vanilla or chocolate)
    2 Tbsp Flax meal
80 g Frozen berries (Iuse strawberries and Blackberries)
    50g Low fat greek yoghurt
    1/2 cup low fat milk
1/8 tsp stevia (or to taste)

Blend it all really well and it turns out lovely and thick. 235 cals
Applie Pie Shake: 1 serving of vanilla whey protein powder, 8 ounces of Almond MIlk, 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce and cinnamon and nutmeg to taste. Delish!

Creamsicle: Vanilla whey protein mixed with 1/2 almond milk, 1/2 Orange juice and lots of ice.

I have also used extracts (like you would use for baking) to change flavours. Extracts I have used with chocolate protein shakes are banana, orange, mint, almond, coconut and with Vanilla protein shakes I love lemon extract.
    CINNAMON BUN SHAKE

1 cup milk of choice (I use partly skim milk)
    2-3 ice cubes
    1 scoop vanilla whey protein
    1/2 TBSP cinnamon
1/2 TBSP Sugar & Fat Free Vanilla Instant Pudding (dry mix only)
    1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Put all in a blender and enjoy! :drinker: It's like drinking a cinnabon! It's awesome and it's not a lot of ingredients.

I love the idea of putting extracts too. I'll try vanilla whey with lemon extract next, as Ivokins suggested.
Check out this site. There's quite a few tasty looking shakes :)

    http://dashingdish.com/recipe/dashing-dish-official-protein-shake/

This! I love her "base" shake. My favorite variant is mint mocha:

1/2c nonfat cottage cheese (90 cal, 14g protein)
2 scoops protein powder w/ instant coffee (I buy click, could prob mix the two) (120 cal, 15g protein) sometimes I'll add a second scoop of other protein powder if I have the cals and want the protein)
2 tbls psyllium husk (it's fiber, so does the body good an absorbs water making the shake thicker. Only prob is that you can't let the shake sit too long or it will need to be eaten with a spoon!) (34 cal, 6.7g fiber)
    A few drops mint extract
    1/2c water
    5 ice cubes

244 cal, 29g protein, 6.7g fiber keeps me full for hours!

I have a protein smoothie every morning for breakfast:

2 scoops PHD diet strawberry protein powder

This fills me until lunch - I just have a couple of cups of green tea inbetween.
Shakeology Chocolate Strawberry Cheesecake 365 calories
    1/2 cup strawberries
    1 scoop chocolate shakeology
1/4 cup ricotta cheese (part skim milk)
1/4 cup low fat plain yogurt

Any fruit you like or have but I like:

This one is my current fav, I have it every day.

    Heavenly Protein Shake

1 scoop chocolate or vanilla protein powder
    1 T natural peanut butter
    1/2 T unsweetened cocoa powder
    1 T ground flax seed
1/2 C original unsweetened almond milk
    1 banana
    1/2 C water
    2 cups ice

    Blend together and Enjoy! ;-)
If you are wanting to increase veggies in your day, Bolthouse Farms 100% Carrot Juice is very good in a shake along with some raw kale or spinach and some sort of fruit mixed in with the protein powder and liquid of your choice. Also, crushed ice makes it extra wonderful :)
    my very favorite:

    1 c. fresh baby spinach
1/2 avocado (diced and frozen works great)
    1 c. frozen blueberries
    1 tsp cinnamon
1 scoop vanilla or strawberry protein powder
1 TBSP virgin organic coconut oil
water-amount varies depending on how thick/thin you like it

The avocado adds healthy fats and it makes it so incredibly creamy and smooth! The coconut oil adds healthy fat too... and I'm not afraid of calories or fat... so I go for it. :) Not a low cal shake.
How about a plant based protein drink! Most of these have whey protein, we do not need that much protein! Do the research, any excess protein gets converted to sugar and stored as fat!

    3 raw kale leaves
    1/4 cup raw spinach
    1/2 banana
    1 small green apple
    1/4 cup raw walnuts
    1/4 cup raw almonds
1 small piece of raw ginger
    1 tbsp coconut oil
    1/4 medium sized cucumber
    fresh lemon squeezed juice
    water or coconut water
I use no flavor protein powder so I can add whatever natural flavor I want. My current favorite is this:

    1 scoop protein powder
    3 Tbsp Pb2
    1 Tbsp cocoa powder
    1/2 small banana
    1 tsp raw honey
    1 cup almond coconut milk
    Ice blended until smooth

Yum. It tastes like a chocolate shake.
Mint chocolate chip ice cream shake:

    1/2 cup skim milk
2 to 3 cups of spinach. (there is a recipe for freezing your spinach on bodybuilding.com that will make it thicker, and more shake-like.
1 scoop vanilla or chocolate protein powder. (vanilla looks better)
    1/2 tsp peppermint extract
    sweetener to taste (optional)
    1/2 frozen banana.
    1 tbsp chocolate chips (optional)

    Cookies and cream shake:

    1/2 cup skim milk
    1 scoop vanilla protein powder
    sweetener to taste
    1/2 frozen banana

    Chocolate Protein Frappe

    1 scoop chocolate protein
    1 scoop Click mocha protein
    1 cup soy milk
1 pump of sugar free Torani chocolate syrup
    6 ice cubes

blend until ice is crushed...its a party in a glass!!
    Cake Batter Protein Shake! Delicious!

1/2 cup Low fat cottage cheese

    1 Scoop vanilla protein powder

3-5 Drops butter or almond extract

2-5 Stevia packets (or sweetener of choice to taste)

1/2 cup-1cup Water (Alter this according to desired consistency)

5-10 Ice Cubes (Depending on how thick you like it, use less for a thinner consistency)

    1/2 tsp guar gum
    1/3 c. milk of choice

    100g blueberries
    1 small banana
    1 scoop strawberry whey protein
    1 tbsp. ground cinnamon
    Swiss Chard
    Carrot
    Green Apple

    Greek yogurt
    Trutein vanilla
    2 scoops chocolate protein
    1 tbsp peanut butter
    1 banana
    1 cup almond milk
    2-3 ice cubes
I like to add the Orange crystal light to vanilla protein shake. Makes an Orange Julius!
Frappachino Protein Shake (found on pinterest)

1 packet of Starbucks Via instant coffee, 1 scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder , 8oz vanilla almond milk, 8-9 ice cubes. Blend.
This is more of a morning breakfast shake but you could add more protein:

1 cup Trader Joe's Very Cherry Berry Blend
    1/4 cup Walnut Halves
1/2 cup Trader Joe's Strawberry Kefir
    1/2 scoop Vanilla Whey Protein
1/4 cup Trader Joe's Freeze Dried Bananas
    1/4 cup Rolled Oats
    taking notes:glasses:

    -2 scoop vanilla whey protien
    -4 scoop hemp protien
    -1 banana
    -1 tbsp of vanilla icecream
    -1tbsp of wheat germ
    -1 tbsp of flaxseed
    -3 cubes of ice
    -3.5oz of water
    Peanut Butter Chocolate Banana:

    1 scoop choco protein powder

    Vanilla or Chocolate protein powder
1/2 to 1 tsp instant coffee
    Water
    Ice

    Vanilla Protein powder
2 tsp smuckers sugar free seedless blackberry jelly
    ice
    water

    Banana Protein powder
    ice
    water
    warmed peanut butter
    2 Tbs oats
    Strawberry Banana:
    - 3/4 cup frozen strawberries
    - 1/2 or 1 whole banana (can be frozen or not)
    - 1 container Fage 0% Greek Yogurt
    - 1/2 cup water (and more if it's too thick)
    - 1 handful ice cubes
    - Optional: add 1/2 scoop protein powder (vanilla) for more protein; 1 packet of sweetener if you want it sweeter

    ~~~Blend frozen fruit, water, and ice first, then add the other ingredients and blend more.
    (I also make the above ^^ smoothie with only strawberries. I bet you could sub those fruits for a bunch of different ones)
    Chocolate Protein:
    - 1 scoop protein powder
    - 1 banana
    - 1 cup water
    - 1 tbsp cocoa powder
    - 1 packet stevia
    - 1 handful ice
    ~~~Blend protein powder, water, stevia, cocoa, and ice first. Then blend in banana.

    1 scoop chocolate whey
    1 cup of chocolate milk
2 tbsp peppermint hot chocolate mix
    lots of ice

now the macros would depend on the protein powder you use and the type of milk. i used 1% chocolate milk but obviously it would be better for you if you used almond milk or water. I haven't experimented with those yet. The peppermint hot chocolate mix is by presidents choice. I put over 2 cups of ice in mine so it was super thick and frosty like a milkshake
    Frappe Like Shake

1 packet Instant Coffee (Starbucks, Folgers, etc)
    1 tsp cocoa
    1 scoop chocolate protein
3/4 to 1 cup unsweet almond milk
    ice

    BLEND all... yum.

(sometimes I add a dash of cinnamon, or a squirt of low sugar hersheys syrup if I want more chocolate. I also sometimes add in 1 tsp of PB2 if I want a peanut butter twist)

Play with what you have in pantry.
    Black Forest Blizzard

    1/2 frozen banana
    1 cup frozen black cherries
    1/4 tsp almond extract
    1 tbsp cocoa powder

This is so refreshing after a workout!
Red, White and Blueberry (great for after cardio)
    1 blueberry greek yogurt
    1 scoop van protein
    1/2 c fresh strawberries
    1/2 c freshblueberries
    1 c skim milk
    blend and enjoy

    2 scoops of choc protein
    1 banana

    1 sm apple, diced

1/2 cup plain, low fat yogurt
    1/4 cup raspberries
    1/4 cup blackberries
    1/4 cup blueberries
    1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Place all ingredients in a blender and mix to desired thickness. (I use Designer Whey protein powder and frozen berries since I can't make it every day and don't want the fruit to go bad. I also like to add flaxseed and am thinking about trying it with chia seeds.)

    1 scoop vanilla protein powder
    1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
    + liquid of your choice

    My apple pie is:
    Half chopped fresh apple
1tsp cinnamon or more if you love
    1 scoop vanilla protein powder
    + liquid of your choice

Those are my favourites so far.
THIS THREAD RULES.

Bump this to save for later!

Yummy! Yummolishcious! It is full of Deliciousness! Thanks for sharing your low calorie recipe idea!

  • This is what I like to drink when my friends are having cocktails:

    SEX ON THE BEACH

    4 ounces diet cranberry juice
    4 ounces orange crystal light
2 scoops of unflavored whey protein
1 cup of frozen crushed pineapple in its own juice
    about 8 ice cubes

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Serve in a cocktail glass. Makes 2 servings.

  • I'm using the Vi Protein Powder and these two are my favorites:

    Iced Coffee (300 cal.)
    2 scoops Vi
1/2 Packet Starbuck Via Iced Coffee
2 oz. Liquid Sugar-Free Creamer (I've used caramel macchaito and vanilla caramel)
    8 oz 1% Milk
    4-5 Ice Cubes

    Strawberry Cheesecake (253 cal.)
    2 scoop Vi
2 tsp Sugar-Free Cheesecake Jello powder
1 c. Strawberries (fresh or frozen)
    8 oz. 1% Milk
4-5 Ice Cubes (if using fresh strawberries)
  • Its better if you can make your own whey from raw milk based yogurt.

Thanks to everyone who has posted their recipes on this site. It is my new favorite part of MFP. Today I reached a major goal in my journey - I have exceeded 100 pounds lost. Recently I had a friend assess what I have been eating and was told to increase my calories and to decrease my cardio. She also advised monitoring the percentage allocation among protein, carbs and fat. I was not eating enough protein to build muscle and needed to shift some focus from cardio to weight training.

Bottom line is that your recipes have enabled me to up my protein consumption so a big THANK YOU to everyone. Since I am new to protein powder usage, I will be glad to add a few recipes as I get creative myself. In the meantime I am thoroughly enjoying all your posts! THANK YOU for your help!

I made this on Saturday, and it was delicious:

one cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
    2 tbsp. PB2
    one scoop vanilla whey protein
    one banana, frozen
    handful of frozen strawberries

Next time I might add some oatmeal.
