scared of potatoes,noodles and rice

Should I be scared of potatoes,noodles and rice. I do use brown rice. These carbs. I have heard it takes them longer to break up and they store fat. Do ya eat these?

I eat brown rice, brown pasta and boiled potatoes quite regularly. On average I'd say I have brown rice 2-3 times a week, brown pasta once a week and the boiled potatoes 1-2 times a week.
I've lost quite a bit of weight and still losing, so in my experience it's fine to eat them in moderation (as with most things).0 -
I can't eat pasta of any kind - my ulcerative colitis hates it. I still have potatoes or rice (white basmati) once per week. I do better if I minimize grains/starches in my diet.0

Hi. I use steamed cauliflower in place of rice. Instead of mashing as potatoes I would lightly blend until the steamed cauli breaks up into small pieces and it looks like rice. I will put a stir-fry over it or whatever else you would do with rice. Add whatever seasonings to it you enjoy.
Hope you try it...it's healthier and less calories/carbs.0 -
I eat them all aslo. The only one I don't touch anymore is macaroni noodles. there are 450 calories in a cup. So much more than I knew. I now try to eat more whole wheat items and brown rice for the health benefits. All in moderation. There are no bad foods, well okay pop tarts are kind of useless.0

Yes moderation is the key. Rice, potatoes and pastas are starchy carbs which get broken down quickly and converted to sugars if you are not burning them off. I think the biggest problem people have with these is over-eating. A serving of pasta should be 1/2 cup, not a full plateful.0

I eat EVERYTHING (well, almost everything) but it's all about portion size. These foods are all part of a balanced, healthy diet. Don't be afraid... just watch how much of any one food that you eat. I even ate ice cream last night, but it was one of those little single serving size Ben & Jerry's... 200 calories of ambrosia! Not something I'd eat every day, but a small amount once is a while is just fine! If someone told me I could never eat potatoes or noodles or rice again I would be one very unhappy camper!0

barring any kind of food allergies, you don't have to fear any kind of food {IMO}. Just accurately {as much as possible} count those calories!0

I usually eat at least one these, at least once a day. They are food staples and I'm not about to give them up. 50lbs lost so far, they've not done me any harm.0

They are a trigger food for me. I do believe in eating them in moderation just not for me. I do eat sweet potatoes though.0

Agree with the above.... No reason to fear any of them as long as you can fit them into your caloric intake... I tend to stick to brown rice and whole wheat pasta's these days but do still it the white ones when I want them.... Best of Luck to you....0

Well, when I eat pasta, it has to be after I've worked out at the gym ...... because a small portion won't do ...... I want BOWLS of the stuff :laugh:0

Have you tried rice pastas or corn or quinoa noodles? I have to follow a strict gluten free diet but there are a lot of quality pastas that are gluten free that might not irritate your UC.0

I eat bread nearly every day, (white) pasta & potatoes several times a week and white rice every now and again, and I've had no trouble losing fat. Unless you have a specific medical issue with them, or they trigger you to overeat for some reason, then just fit them into your calorie/macroutrient goals and don't worry about them.0

I've struggled with various health issues, and found I'm a whole lot healthier and happier not eating grains. So yeah, they don't scare me, nor do I believe they will make me fat.
It's not a must that one cuts out those things in order to lose fat. Plenty of people have had no trouble losing fat and eating grains and starches.0 -
I eat them pretty regularly - but I generally go with whole wheat bread and pasta and brown rice. I prefer them though, generally, so it's not like I'm giving anything up. As long as you keep track of your portions, and can fit it into your calorie allowance or macros, you should be fine!0

I enjoy whole wheat couscous, pasta and brown rice in moderation and I'm almost at goal but every few months I go to my favorite Italian BYOB and eat a huge plate of the best freshest most garlicky linguine and clam sauce before which I eat a large fresh seafood salad!!!!!!! I blow my calorie count all to heck but oh well.0

No, if you were i'd seek professional help. The actual differences between brown rice and white rice, white/whole wheat bread etc aren't as big as you're lead to believe0 -
I lost a considerable amount of weight whilst still eating carbs but now I am at a point where I am looking to tone up and lose my last 5-10lbs I am cutting down on them.
I no longer eat pasta (If I do it's a once a month type scenario) and I have switched to brown rice, couscous and sweet potatoes as they are better for you than the white alternatives.
You do not have to cut out carbs, they are good for you and particularly if you exercise they will help give you the energy you need to power through.
It's about making the right carb choices, not cutting them out.0 -

I eat them all. I do eat brown rice instead of white rice and I prefer sweet potatoes to white, but that's because I can eat them plain and I like too much butter and salt on white potatoes. Make sure you're eating protein and add bulk to your meal with veggies and you'll do great. Kudos to you for getting healthier.0

I eat brown rice and whole wheat pastas as well as other whole grains (quinoa, barley, etc.) I don't really eat potatoes but it isn't because I think they are bad, it is simply because all the ways I like them prepared have a lot of added calories and fat (mashed potatoes, fries, even roasted with butter). I will eat sweet potatoes, though. All that said, I eat everything in moderation measuring/weighing everything and only eating one serving a day.0

I'm going to repost something I put on another thread because it seems relevant...
Just my 2 cents... for me.. when I have "bad carbs" (white bread, white rice, white pasta etc) with supper I am almost always up a pound or two in the morning. Think of it this way, carbs are "sugar energy" meant to help you run around and do stuff.. what are you doing after dinner? Sitting on the couch? Do you really need that sugar burst to get you going at that point? Nope... and if you don't use it up where does it go? ... you guessed it... fat stores for the next time you need a boost. I don't worry about carbs in pure vegetables though and that doesn't seem to matter and in the first half of the day whole grain bread, pasta and brown rice are fine.. even good!)
Since I've switched up my suppers to be clean lean protein and vegetables, I'm losing an extra 1/2 lb a day!!! No joke.. and I'm 45 yrs old! I put the majority of my carbs in the morning or at lunch but I stick with whole grains and unprocessed.0
