I heart milk and I drink 1 cup (skim) after workouts with frozen blueberries (blended). I think the workout is helping me lose weight more than drinking that milk but it sure is yummy!
How is that show still on?0 -
Your RDA is 1000 mg/day. Go to Reports and pull up your calcium history. If you're under, eat more. If not, don't sweat it.
P.S. Your body can only handle 500 mg doses, so split it up during the day.0 -
I think we should all hire a barrister because i have become apoplectic towards this quack and i'm about to say something scurrilous. This guy is deceiving the masses and using his status as a Dr. to lead us astray like sheep. He'll have anyone on his show to get ratings. BEWARE of this quack.0

I saw a documentary proving that a diet based on high dairy consumption prevents the absorbtion of fat. They took several people and put them all on diffferent diets and analyzed their poo abstracting the fat. Everyone was given the same amount of calories and the same amount of calories from fat. It was quite gross but the conclusion was that the diet that was dairy based abstracted the largest amount of fat because the dairy made it somehow less able to absorb. It is probably because only 20% of the population (mainly in Denmark) does not have lactose intolerance.0

I would suggest a supplement to any woman really....I generally get the bare minimum in my diet and should also take a supplement...
I did switch from dairy milk to almond milk though because I was consuming a LOT of milk in the run of a day and the calories added up to big numbers...not to mention my daughter has a constipation issue and I was instructed to limit her milk intake...but, I was using it in coffee, cereal, smoothies, etc....almond milk still has all the good stuff milk does (except protein unfortunately) and it made a big difference in my calories....I still eat cheese in moderation....and I dont eat yogourt as much lately simply because my budget hasn't allowed it but I do think calcium is very important so I consume as much as I can....0 -

I adore your vocabulary.
ETA: I also like skim milk. Noticed my nails getting WAY nicer, less brittle, more white once I increased my intake. Haven't noticed an effect in either direction on weight loss. I think its tasty!0 -
His wife is a vegan isn't she? You can simply take a calcium supplement without having to pay too much into the dairy industry which is full of not only corruption (and yes government corruption as well) but also full of cruelty. You don't have to completely cut it out but almond milk gives you even more calcium, and calcium is also in many foods, even vegetables! I wouldn't worry about it too much. No one food makes you lose weight faster, it's all about what you eat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAdqLB6bTuQ < That video changed my life How to lose weight without losing your mind!0

Dr. Oz is a quack.
But i have seen many articles and studies lately regarding milk and it helping to keep pounds off. I'm not so sure about helping you "burn fat" or anything like that. But it can help by keeping you satiated and giving you lots of vitamins and minerals. Moderate amounts of whole milk are great for you, the non-fat stuff probably not so much.0 -
I went vegan and lost weight effortlessly. Gave up all dairy and the pounds fell off. Have kept off 40 pounds without exercise for 3 years now. Cholesterol improved tremendously. You get plenty of calcium from veggies. Milk is not needed. Try the www.21daykickstart.org site.0

You do need calcium, but it's not a "more is always better" nutrient.
Read this:

It's evidenced based information from someone not trying to sell you something, or sensationalize anything so you'll watch their TV show.0 -
"Calcium is no magic bullet. What the study says is that ... higher-calcium diets favor burning rather than storing fat. Calcium changes the efficiency of weight loss," - WebMD0

LOL... Dr. Oz.
I think something else you should consider on the calcium topic, should you actively try to increase your dietary calcium is the ratio of magnesium that should go with it. I KNOW I don't get enough magnesium, even with a multivitamin.
"Without magnesium, calcium may be not fully utilized, and underabsorption problems may occur leading to arthritis, osteoporosis, menstrual cramps, and some premenstrual symptoms." - Check it out: http://www.mgwater.com/calmagab.shtml0 -
" Oz from all his bios is a very good surgeon, but as a diet specialist he is the proverbial disaster. Nearly every week he announces some new revelation or result of a personal study, yet as the ultimate sophist these news releases have minimal foundation. "

Yogurt makes you lose belly fat? Wrong.
Milk makes you fat because it is only meant for baby mammals? Wrong.
What makes people fat is eating in excess. Fact.
Did you read the cited studies? No one here has said that dairy alone causes weight loss. The studies are stating including dairy along with calorie restriction is beneficial. I think most people posting in this thread are well aware it still comes back to cals in vs. cals out but if there are studies out there showing that calcium with diet restriction aids in burning more visceral fat (the more dangerous type of fat) and retaining muscle vs. calorie restriction alone burning muscle at a higher rate than visceral fat they why wouldn't you be open minded to it and researching?0 -
Almond milk has 90 grams of calcium per cup and whole milk has 30. Collard greens, spinach, and broccoli are also good sources. You can get fats from nuts (also has calcium) and avocados. Almond milk and nuts have magnesium to help absorb the nutrient too.0

This has been the buzz in the nutrition community for the last few years...
One study I pulled to substantiate, but there are a few others that refute.

Increased consumption of dairy foods and protein during diet- and exercise-induced weight loss promotes fat mass loss and lean mass gain in overweight and obese premenopausal women.

Abstract
Weight loss can have substantial health benefits for overweight or obese persons; however, the ratio of fat:lean tissue loss may be more important. We aimed to determine how daily exercise (resistance and/or aerobic) and a hypoenergetic diet varying in protein and calcium content from dairy foods would affect the composition of weight lost in otherwise healthy, premenopausal, overweight, and obese women. Ninety participants were randomized to 3 groups (n = 30/group): high protein, high dairy (HPHD), adequate protein, medium dairy (APMD), and adequate protein, low dairy (APLD) differing in the quantity of total dietary protein and dairy food-source protein consumed: 30 and 15%, 15 and 7.5%, or 15 and <2% of energy, respectively. Body composition was measured by DXA at 0, 8, and 16 wk and MRI (n = 39) to assess visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume at 0 and 16 wk. All groups lost body weight (P < 0.05) and fat (P < 0.01); however, fat loss during wk 8-16 was greater in the HPHD group than in the APMD and APLD groups (P < 0.05). The HPHD group gained lean tissue with a greater increase during 8-16 wk than the APMD group, which maintained lean mass and the APLD group, which lost lean mass (P < 0.05). The HPHD group also lost more VAT as assessed by MRI (P < 0.05) and trunk fat as assessed by DXA (P < 0.005) than the APLD group. The reduction in VAT in all groups was correlated with intakes of calcium (r = 0.40; P < 0.05) and protein (r = 0.32; P < 0.05).
Therefore, diet- and exercise-induced weight loss with higher protein and increased dairy product intakes promotes more favorable body composition changes in women characterized by greater total and visceral fat loss and lean mass gain0 -
I find this hilarious considering he had a show last year saying NOT to drink milk as it is "pure sugar".
Cue Green Day...Oz is just a Walking Contradiction.0 -
He got it all wrong, milk makes you fat since it's only for baby mammals and adults cannot digest it properly
All the more reason to drink it then. If you can't digest it, you don't have to count the calories, right?0 -
