hello everyone, i would love extra support!
i have been over weight my whole life, so i want to change this! i want to lose around 110 pounds, but that number is not exact.
I have never been skinny, so i have no clue how it will feel, thus if i weight 160 but im truly happy i will be fine with that:)
i work out very often, but i have a problem eating in moderation, and over eating when snacking.0 -
@ron2e - I had to read your reply to me twice because the first time I read it, I thought you thought I was talking about marijuana. Haha! I thought, "Oh no! They are all going to think I'm a druggie now!" Alas, I slowed down the second time through and my brain kicked in. I can understand your angst over buying tobacco for your best friend and obviously someone you want to see healthy. Would it turn into an argument if you told him, "I don't want to contribute to your demise!"
When I read "Szechuan prawns" I instantly got hungry! I know Gordon Ramsey and his LOVE of swearing. I think, if I were ever in his kitchen and he started yelling at me, I would really have to fight the urge to punch him in the throat, haha!! 100% agree with you on healthy recipe's being hard to find. Especially recipe's that taste good. I have friends give me healthy recipe's to try and I can tell sometimes when something is going to be gross and it's disheartening. We shouldn't have to give up taste!
My pic was taken on my son's 3rd bday! We took him out to eat for breakfast and he loved his pancakes. I had to take away his plate because I was afraid he was going to vomit if he ate any more.
@needtobefitt - Hi! Have you just started on MFP? What was your motivation to start getting healthy?
I can tell you right now, being skinny isn't going to make you feel any different if you are going through emotional stuff. However, getting healthy does have a positive impact on self image and lifts your mood so if that is what you're going for, then you will feel great!
My problem has never really been eating bad food, it's always been the portion and I too have an issue with curbing my snacking. I used to snack a lot at night and when I started logging what I ate on MFP I was a little horrified and disgusted at seeing the amount of calories and sodium I was eating after dinner time. My goal weight is about 160 lbs as well, but like you wrote, that number isn't exact. May I ask how tall you are? I'm 5'7" and I've read that someone my height could be anywhere from 125lbs to I think 160-170 lbs. 125 lbs seems insane to me and I read that Angelina Jolie is 5'7" and 125lbs but she looks too skinny for me. I'm not looking to be that slender... or that hungry, but in high school I was 160 lbs and had a decent amount of muscle and I looked pretty good.
I am making chicken and vegetable coconut curry with rice tonight. I added the recipe to MFP; http://www.mylifeasamrs.com/2012/05/chicken-and-vegetable-thai-coconut-curry.html, and am stoked to find out it's only 220 calories per serving! I did not add the rice calories though, but I will be eating maybe a cup of white rice with it. I am sure if I substituted in light coconut milk it would be less calories... but I like that strong coconut taste. I edited the recipe to only 2 Weight Watchers chicken breasts, deleted a green pepper bc when I made this before it just seemed like too much peppers in there and substituted the frozen peas with one cup of mixed organic vegetables with edamame instead of peas... since it's difficult for me to eat them. Oh, and I added garlic. I LOVE garlic.0 -

I just need to make a post in this thread as I so belong with this group. I am a big guy that is currently sitting at 364 and I have at least 100lbs to go. I am to busy right now to get involved with this thread and I will be away all next week but I want to find this thread easily as there seems to be a lot of like minded people in here.

Hello, new to the community, new to weight loss. I am a wife and mother of 2, a two year old and a 5 month old. I work part time and I am in school full time, so finding time and energy to exercise has been a huge challenge of mine. I don't eat well, generally eat my feelings and stresses (which there are a ton of!). I am terrible about planning ahead for snacks and meals and generally when I am hungry I just eat everything in sight. I have been feeling particularly bad about my 100lb excess especially since my sister has been seeing good results (we are pretty competitive with each other) and we signed up for a 5k at the end of the summer. I am looking for a supportive group and it sounds like this is it. For starters does anyone have tips to squeeze in exercise?0

@britzy3199 - I understand your struggles. I am in school full time with a 3 year old running around. May I suggest you looking into freezer cooking? Saves a lot of time and money. As for exercise, girl, you just gotta make time. Wake up early and go for a walk or anything you can do like an exercise video or youtube has a lot of cardio that you could do if you don't want to leave home. It will suck at first but soon you'll be looking forward to having that little bit of time to yourself to get healthy!0

@salemnye, I'm not sure I really intentionally conditioned myself. I started off by doing a LOT of walking. And then walking just wasn't enough, so I did intervals of jogging. Then one day on my lunch break I decided to walk, but then had to run in order to make it back on time. And then I just decided to run on my lunch breaks. Only a mile an half on the lunch breaks, that is all I have time for. I did a couple sessions of c25k, but I was too far into it myself to make that work for me. And today was totally random. Just, BOOM, run a 5K.
Thanks. That's what I usually do for running/walking. I may just start pushing myself more to run (jog lol) because walking really isn't enough for me Thanks for your tips!
Anyone have tips to get the original inserts out of your shoes? I have some inserts that will help me with shin splints that I got last summer when I was running more I just need to take the originals out and put the new ones in.0 -

Not so glamorous as it sounds, I am attending an IT conference so it will be death by Powerpoint for four days and I'll see nothing of the real Cyprus. I fly back Friday night and have to sleep over at Heathrow airport to catch an early flight out to Slovakia on Saturday morning as I have a project going live.
Yes, I see what you mean about the weed and marijuana, we tend to sometimes refer to tobacco in the UK as the 'weed'. Regarding my friend, yes I could say that to him and he wouldn't be offended, but I'm sort of torn, I know he relies on me getting it for him and as I say he's such a good friend I'd do anything for. It's really difficult.
I know I'm not female, but as far as height and weight goes, the fittest and healthiest I have ever been was about (mumble) years ago in the air force when I weighed 135 lbs and was super fit (it was sort of forced upon us) and I am 5'6". I was around 140 when I gave up smoking.
I have to admit I am a garlicaholic! I can't get enough of the stuff and even enjoy breathing on people to share the joy! One of my favourite meals is to fry up about 12 cloves of garlic in a little olive oil, throw in a steak for a couple of minutes max each side so it is nicely rare, finish with a touch of butter for flavour and eat with a salad.

@britzy - I think more important than fitting in exercise is to follow the MFP guidelines for daily calorie allowance. You will lose weight this way (I am living proof!) and once you lose weight feel a lot more like exercising. And please don't put your feelings and stresses into eating, that way lies even more pressure (don't ask how I know that!).0 -
Hi there! I been on MFP for about 2 weeks now. Im 42 5 ' 5" and need to lose about 100lbs. My weight starting on here was 232.5.
I am struggling to lose the weight. My calorie goal was over 1300 but I feel like I am starving even when i eat back my exercise. I bumped it to 1400 but still not helping.. grrr.
anyway I could use some friends that want support and to give support... My diary is open for friends to read.. (even though I am embaressed some days of what I have to log..)

Today, is my hubby's birthday so I made his favorite breakfast and had only a small bit and am just putting his favorite dinner in the oven (turkey) so if I can hold myself to a single cupcake later I should be within my calories for the day. The best part of the day for me was that he loved his gift. I got him a new comfy bike. He has talked about going on rides with me for a couple of years but didn't have a bike. So, I took a bit of a risk getting him one. Unfortunately today was very rainy here in Seattle so we didn't really get to go for a ride.0 -

Anyway... Hello everyone. I'm looking to liberate 85 pounds or so. I've been on this site since early Feb of this year and am finding it quite helpful. I'm a night shift RN (12 hr) considering retirement. My point of clarity came when it was nearing time to buy new uniforms and I refused to buy a larger size! 10 weeks into this, my uniforms are too big and I'll be ready for smaller ones (at least 1 size smaller, perhaps 2) soon. This group seems an interesting mix and I'd like to join.0 -
@salemnye - Are they stuck in your shoes? I am supposed to wear orthotics bc of my silly flat feet but unfortunately lost them in our move across the country. My only guess is if you could somehow warm them up to the point where you could kind of tug them out without ripping your shoes to shreds. Maybe try a blow dryer on them? I don't want you to ruin your shoes though!
@ron2e - It sounds like you get to travel the world but not really see it. I hope that's not the case. Please tell me you get to do some tourist activities!
Shall we start a garlic-aholics anonymous? Spreading our love of garlic to people who have not discovered it? Haha, the visual of someone breathing their garlic breath on others is hilarious and disconcerting at the same time. My husband likes to take about a half cup of good olive oil and crush a couple garlic cloves in it and let it sit while he boils the water for pasta. After the pasta is done cooking and it's drained, he will strain the garlic out of the oil and add the oil to the pasta, let it sit for a minute and add a little parmesan cheese. It's SO good and oh so bad.
@jagkat - Hi! This might sound silly but have you thought about foods with a little more fiber? Fills you up quicker and you stay satisfied longer!
@sjo68 - I just wanted to say hello. So. Hello! I love Seattle and we are actually going to move there closer to the end of this year. Forgive my ignorance, but are there lots of places to hike around Seattle?
@rnbecker711 - Thank you for being a nurse. Two of my best friends are nurses and they are saints. Nurses and teachers definitely need to get paid more! There is nothing like realizing your clothes are getting too big and it's time to go shopping, no?
As a note, I'm so happy I found this thread. I hardly know any of you and I've only been on for a couple days but it feels great to know there are other people with names and faces who have/had struggles similar to mine with weight. So thank you!0 -

I'm afraid I get to see airports, offices, hotels and restaurants in all sorts of countries and don't get much time for tourist things unless I'm lucky enough to have a weekend off in the relevant place. So far that has only happened in Barcelona, Hong Kong, South Africa and Netherlands. The long haul destinations are easier of course as it's not so quick and easy to get home for a weekend.
Yes I think we should spread the love of garlic, the more people who eat it, the more people you can kiss :laugh:0 -
Hi everyone.
Wow, its been almost a month since I last posted on this thread. There are so many new faces and I'm having a hard time reading all the previous posts. I've been counting calories on and off for the past few weeks. As for the exercise, well I suffered setback after setback. When march ended, I promised myself that I'll start again this april. Unfortunately, I have been having serious back pains and had to go to the doctor and have it checked out. Long story short, got my x-ray and I found out I was suffering neck arthritis. I had to take up a few PT sessions. I just started doing yoga again. It seems that my neck pain is getting not too intense now and I even stopped taking pain killers. So now, I'm starting it slow again. I'm taking in one day at a time.

My name is Helen and so far I've lost 18lbs with about 50 to go (my slider says less than that I think but I've set my goal weight about 14 lbs above what I'd like to be)
I have worked as a registered nurse for most of my adult life but have worked in the Medical School of our local Uni for the last 5 years. I have chronic back problems (possibly caused by innappropriate lifting techniques used in my early years nursing when Health and Safety wasn't as strict here in the U.K. as it is now) I am unable to do very much exercise except walk which I love.
My passions in life are off loom beadweaving ( I make only small projects like earrings) and world travel, I've been lucky enough to visit places such as Borneo, Oman,Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.
I need friends I guess to help keep me motivated and on track, some days I find my new healthy living regime easy other days its all just pretty hard.
I'm glad I found this thread and will check in everyday when I log my food.

Hi everyone, I know I've been MIA for the last week. To say I did not cope well with the return to work is an underststent. None of it helped by my husband working overtime every night last week and both days this weekend. I fell apart and ate and ate and ate. It wasn't the right way to handle it but it is what happened. I am feeling much more positive today and am goin to start logging again. I will read all the posts at a later time. Hope you are all doing well!0

@vanessa, glad you've taken the step to quit smoking! Excellent choice. Sounds like you've got some good exercise lined up. Keep at it with the Zumba, I do that too and I love it, even if I can't do it very well...
Also, I wouldn't call myself a chef, but I do cook a lot. Not necessarily by choice, but because it's healthier for me and my wallet. I've got a whole slew of recipes, a lot of which are very good for you, and some that aren't. I love freezer cooking too! I make double batches of what I'm cooking for dinner sometimes, and then on the busy days it comes in so handy just to thaw something out.
I need to join this garlic lovers group. If I make a recipe that calls for a single clove of garlic, about 6 of them make it in... lol.
@Ron, that is great news about the pants. Not that you have to do the hitch 'em up shimmy, but that you're shrinking! I'm doing the same thing, did my laundry last night, and got rid of two different pairs of pants, and two shirts! Pretty soon I'm gonna be down to the bare minimum and I'll be forced to go shopping.
@Needtobefitt - I know how you feel, I've never been skinny either. Lowest adult clothing size I've worn is an 18. If overeating seems to be a problem for you, make sure you log your food, and drink lots, and I really mean lots, of water. As in about 10-12 cups a day. Our bodies really need that much, and it also helps you feel full.
@Bigandtallsection, welcome, and looking forward to hearing from you.
@britzy3199 - welcome! Sounds like you have some motivation to get moving with that 5K coming up. I don't know how early you normally get up, but try getting up half an hour to an hour earlier and squeezing in a workout before your munchkins get up. Or if you have a lunch break during work or between classes, go for a walk.
@Jagkat, welcome! I know that I can't get by with less than about 1500 calories a day, I just get ravenous by about 7 p.m. and want to eat everything in sight. And since I eat back exercise calories, there are days that when I work out, I eat up to 2200. I have my daily allowance without exercise set to 1722. That number is not random, I found a spreadsheet that helps calculate how much I should be eating. I have a copy of it on my computer, but I can't remember which MFP user it came from. If you're interested in it, let me know, I will try to figure out a way to get it to you.
@Sjo68 - you're in Seattle! I live in WA state as well, SW coastal area, about 2 hours from Seattle. Glad that your hubby liked his bike! I recently bought one for myself, and my older son, and we go riding together occasionally. I should get my husband into it too, and then he can be the one with a toddler attached to the bike!
@Rbeckner, welcome. Like others have said, as a nurse, you're a saint! I so appreciate people like you, because I know it's something I could never do. And we will be here to support you as you liberate that weight!
@Jehan, Sorry to hear things haven't been going so well for you, but glad you're on the mend. Medical issues are tough when they get in the way of your weight loss progress. It's happened to me, but it was a sprained ankle that caused me to be in a walking boot for 6 weeks a couple years ago... ugh. I had been making progress, but allowed myself to be totally derailed by that.
@Helen, welcome! You're so lucky to have gotten to travel to those places! Someday I hope to make it to Europe... Only ever been out of the U.S. once, and that was to Mexico on a mission trip. This group is really great, I love being a part of it. Everyone is so supportive, so you'll be in good company here.
@Stephaniezoundi - I'm sorry your week didn't go well! Just remember though, look forward, not back. Just because the choices made last week weren't the best, you don't need to beat yourself up about it.

Wow, hadn't replied in a while, so had some catching up to do! Like I said on Saturday, I ran a 5K. Then I decided yesterday that I would run again, and did 2.75 miles, just under a 5K. My legs are kind of making me regret that decision today though. I have this tendency to compete with myself, see how far I can push it. Guess I'll be taking it easy today. I did walk my son to school this morning, and it took 40 minutes round trip! 10 minutes longer than usual, but I think that was because my 3 year old was not wanting to walk, and I refused to carry him since my legs were tired. It's a 1.45 mile round trip, and he has walked it many times, so I knew he could handle it today.
I'm looking forward to this evening though! My husband and I are going to go out to dinner and a movie. Not sure about where we'll be eating dinner yet, but I'm hoping I'll be able to stay in my calories. And, I'm going to sneak my own snacks to the movie. Yeah, I'm a rebel like that.

evdjohnson- yes there are tons of places to hike within an hour or less of Seattle. It is great because you can do some nice easy flat hiking or climb a darn mountain if you want to.
stepahniezoundi- sometimes we fall off the wagon but as long as weget right back on you things will be okay.

megblackburn- again congrats on your 5k and running. I am working through the c25k running program and am on week 5 (I know you said you are not using it).
Had a great weekend and totally enjoyed my cupcake for hubby's birthday last night. And when I weighed in this morning I lost over 3 pounds this week. Yay, I am almost at 30 pounds. I have been inspired by megblackburn's post and am looking into 5k races/runs in the Seattle area. I found one a color run in September (right near my birthday) and/or a 5k Ole! on May 4th.0 -
stephaniezoundi - I totally understand your being upset. Whenever I am feeling needy or upset I go straight to pizza or Chinese food. Glad to read that you are feeling positive though, as that is always a great frame of mind! Go get 'em girl!
debbiewillers - Ah, I love doing nothing! Being busy is good but sometimes it's even a treat to go by myself grocery shopping. My favorite alone thing to do is take a really hot detox bath and then drink some wine with a book or a movie.
Nadine - That is totally great you have small goals in mind. It's overwhelming to think about the total amount I want to loose - about 70 lbs or so - and it's much easier if I stick to smaller increments like 5 or 10 lbs.
megblackburn - Glad to find another freezer cooking fan! I do a lot of double batching as well. And yes, please join our garlic lovers group! I laughed out loud when I read your comment about adding 6 cloves when recipe calls for 1. It's like why? Why only one? What good is that going to do? I love that garlic is good for our heart's as well. Whenever I make stir fry, the addition of at least 5 cloves is an absolute must. I have a 3 year old son too! Good job on all that exercising you are getting in. I can't wait until I am able to start running again.
ron2e - At least you have been able to do some visiting in the great places you've had to work at. I think I'd die of jealousy if you ever got to work in Bali. It's looks SO gorgeous there. I can imagine myself in a cabana, laying on a hammock (if it didn't break - haha) and reading books all day. Sounds like it's almost time for new pants! I am going to guess you don't like clothes shopping since most men don't but still, glad to hear your clothes are getting too big! It sounds like we have another member in our garlic lovers group so let's keep spreading that garlic goodness, haha!
sjo68 - I actually did some flat hiking today and it was great. That is awesome to read there are great places to hike. I can't wait until we visit again to soak up some more Seattle!
I just purchased my first pair of hiking boots online last night. Very. Excited. So this morning we went hiking, the hubs watched my son so I could walk faster with Zeus (our German Shepherd) and I eventually did start doing a light jog. It felt great to jog, even if I couldn't do it for very long but I did push myself and I did combine jogging with fast walking. It felt great but afterwards, I developed an insane headache. Not sure what that was from but guessing it was bc my morning caffeine was not had.
It's getting really frustrating for me to find exercise clothes. After jogging in light sweatpants this morning, I understand now why most people like more fitted cuts. Let me explain my conundrum and maybe someone will have advice for me. My legs are pretty normal and muscular until the very top of my thighs and then my mid-section is much bigger and therefor, not proportional. The exercise bottoms I have almost always make my midsection uncomfortable because they are a little tight. But If I buy bottoms that fit my mid-section then my legs look like they are swimming in a sea of un-needed fabric. This is my plight. My only thought is maybe bike shorts? The ones I've seen around are pretty short though. Help!0 -
@sjo68 - congrats on the 3lb loss - that's a great result. And slightly belatedly, glad the presentation went well. It's such a good feeling to know that you've done it and that maybe the next one won't be so scary!
@meg - sounds like you've done your running stint for a day or so - I have a lot of admiration for people who run such distances. I've always worried about the impact on my joints - but I would love to do a 5k for a good cause. Hope you enjoy the meal and cinema tonight - what did you end up seeing? And definitely sneak in the snacks!

@debbie - don't worry about the weekend - it's a new week to get back into the routine and back on track. I always find the weekends the hardest - too much temptation from dessert and the like!

@evdjohnson - loving the sound of the pasta that your husband makes - must try that at some point. Although as you say, so bad!! And from your earlier post - the curry - you are making me hungry. With you on the coconut milk - full fat for me and I'll make it up somewhere else - I love the taste too much! I don't think I would call myself a chef - but defintely a cook. We cook virtually all of our meals from scratch with fresh ingredients and my husband tells me that we have enough receipes to feed us for life:bigsmile: I love finding new things for us to eat - particularly when I have more time at the weekend. I confess - they don't always tie in with weight loss goals though!
@rbeckner - welcome! Wow - keep saying this - so many new people. Although to be honest I'm relatively new - just doesn't feel like it which is one of the great things about this thread and group of people.
@britzy - I have to agree with Ron - it's easy to eat your stresses but it doesn't help in the long run. It is very hard to find time to exercise - I meant to tonight and just haven't got to it - but I am a firm believer that it can make you feel better in yourself. I managed to work out a lot this weekend gone and can honestly say that I had more energy than I had in weeks. Re: squeezing in exercise - how about squats when drying your hair, things like that. It sounds really small but I was amazed at what I could do in a relatively short space of time. Mind you, I have fairly long hair! If you have stairs at work or school walk up them rather than losing the lift. Those are my immediate thoughts - not much but it's been a long day! You don't have to get in loads of exercise to make a difference - start with little things and build it up slowly as and when you have time.
I think I've caught everything but welcome to anyone I've missed. I only came off the thread for about 12 hours and it's moved on pages! I had a really nice weekend - worked in the garden with my parents on saturday then sat out there with them with cups of tea and slices of cake - very civilised. And we have our rather belated housewarming coming up on Saturday so I need to prepare for that. Hope everyone had a good day!0 -

@evdjohnson... My first 5k was the scariest by far. I didn't do very well, but I stuck with it. I'm bottom heavy so I understand about wanting to lose some weight first. My friend is top heavy and has to wear 2 sport bras everytime she exercises. I feel bad for her. Keep us updated on the 5k whenever you sign up!!!!
@ron2e... Date night is simply when my boyfriend takes me out. We went to a symphony first. Then he took me to dinner. I'm never crazy when we eat out. I got yellowfin tuna with couscous and a side salad with dressing on the side. I also treated myself to a glass of wine. I know they cook the fish in oil/butter. It's better than getting the steak with potatoes or fried chicken. It was very nice. We only eat out like twice a month.
Well today was a bad day, not for food, but for news. I got rejected from my top pick for grad school. I didn't eat my feelings though. My boyfriend insisted on talking about how I deserved to get in. I told him I didn't want to talk about it. Hopefully, I'll get in my 2nd pick. If not, I may eat my feelings that day and not get out of bed. Fingers crossed everyone!!!!0 -
