My dad always said "treat people the way you expect to be treated" and I say that to my kids now.

My sweet grandmother was 90 when she died.. her favorite pearl of wisdom: "Never trust a fart"

    Truer words were never spoken.

When you say you are gonna beat somebody up:

"You gotta bring *kitten* to whoop *kitten*."

You can always talk a good game, but never know when you'll meet your match.

My mom is amazing even if she drives me up the wall... she always says:

"Do as I say, not as I do!"

"I love you more"... ALL THE TIME!

"I'm proud of you, never forget that, you're my baby."

I'm the oldest of 2, but I'm the girl, so I'm the baby and my brother is her "bum".

"Get an education, a degree, and a job and work for at least one year before you marry. That way, you will never need to rely on a man to support you. It's nice to have them in your life, but they aren't necessary for survival." said the woman who has been married to the same person for 60+ years.

My favorite though had to do with religion. I was raised Catholic, and we never read the bible in our home (only the priests were allowed to interpret scripture). Mom didn't like the Southern Baptist mentality of "being born again". She told me to say this, anytime I was ever asked "Have you been born again?"

"No, I did it right the first time."

Now for the wisdom we have passed onto our children:

"We are not your friends, your 'best bud" your "BFF". We are your parents. It's our job to raise you up to be productive, responsible adults, not losers. We will give you rules and set boundaries, and you will follow them. And, when you're older, married and have kids of your OWN, THEN we can be your friends. But for now, we are strictly your parents, and you will follow OUR rules."

Me: But so-and-so's mom is letting her go!

My mom: Well, I guess so-and-so's mom doesn't love her as much as I love you.

Haha! I will have to use that. I always say that I'm not so-and-so's mom.

The best one that always stuck with me was ... "By the grace of God, that could've been you!"

The second best, which was used often, but had just the right effect was .... "F-word!"

    Thanks Mom!!

When I turned 30 and was one of the few of my high school friends without a child and/or Master's degree and up:
"Don't ever say you haven't accomplished anything. You work hard and have achieved all of your goals so far, set another and go for it... I don't care what it is, as long as it makes you happy."

When I was thinking of breaking up with my then boyfriend (now husband) because he was moving faster than I was prepared for:
"Talk to him and give him a chance. He had a life changing experience in Iraq and could have died. He probably just realizes now that you can't take anything for granted, and wants you to know that he loves you."

My mama always said " A mama always knows everything you do, even when you don't think she knows." I didn't know if she was serious or just trying to scare me(it worked).
