    What Jof actually said:
I drug my feet on even looking into it for years for various reasons. I used cost as an excuse, but the real reason was more that I didn't want to have to workout next to chicks that could lift more than me and do more pullups

Hi, I'm in my third week. I complete all of the WOD last. Sucks being last but I'm just happy I am able to finish. Crossfit is so addicting. I love it and hate it at the same time lol

The coaches at my box are great. I haven't heard any stories of anyone getting injured. The coaches play close attention to form.

Finishing DFL is better than not finishing at all (which is better than not starting at all).

Perhaps you'll find this link helpful: http://crossfitice.com/Blog/dfl-and-proud-of-it-you-finished.html

Take the night off! You need to take rest days until most of the soreness is gone. That is especially important when you are doing more difficult workouts than your body is used to.

What did you think of FGB? Is it really that hard?

Yep. From all I've heard, FGB is crazy hard. You're better off waiting until your muscles heal from the last workout before you attempt it. It will be the WOD other times, so it isn't like that is your only chance to ever do it.

How did you deal with it then?

I'd be worried about bailing on the 'graduation ceremony' don't you think it would be better to tough it out and finish that piece as long as you aren't injured?

Perhaps, although I suspect once I warm up, I'll be mostly fine...and since this is the last class of on-ramp, I can't exactly reschedule it. Oh, sure, I *could* sit this one out, but I'll just do the best I can. Besides, if I didn't workout every time I was sore, I'd get no more than two workouts per week.

I am not fond of it... but mostly of the way they do kettlebells. :p

That said, if you have proper coaches, and proper recovery time, and proper form -- have at it.

The only thing I've done so far w/ KBs is what they called an American swing. Seemed benign.

What awful things do they do w/ them that I've not yet experienced that I can look forward to? =P

Haha, you just did it ;) I don't like the American Swing. I am much more fond of the RKC/HKC style swing. It does not go over the head. Snatches do -- but not the swing.

Ah, good then. I didn't mind them...as long as I generated most of the power from my hips at the beginning of the swing, the impact on my shoulders at a less-than-advantageous position with arms extended away from the body was minimal (which I am assuming is your biggest problem with it).

You could call in sick. And it would be the truth because from what I read, your body is in no condition to attempt such a difficult workout.

Beyond that, if you are that sore after every workout, you really need to scale things back and ask your trainer for modifications.

You can always take the day off from class. Every now and then, it's good to take some time off and get extra rest so your muscles will have time to completely heal. It's not healthy to be sore all the time.

This is the first time I've been this sore after working with this particular trainer. In all the years previous to that, I had a really crappy trainer* who frequently pushed me too hard to do too much too soon. I finally wised up and fired him when I joined this local crossfit gym a few weeks ago.

It's amazing that the human race has survived as long as it has if doing physical activity while in a fatigued state is as dangerous as you make it sound.

Ultimately, the difficulty of this particular workout is entirely on me. There are no minimum numbers to reach per round. If I am unable to complete a rep in any particular minute interval, then my score for that minute will simply be a zero.

    * yeah, that "really crappy trainer" was me.

Nope. The Russian Swing is done with the hips too. I just don't like the American one. I don't see the point of bringing it overhead. Between belly button and chest height is all you need. And I don't think I could ever swing 48kg bell over my head! But I can swing that much Hardstyle. I would think going overhead prevents a person going heavy.

Funny because if I'm not at least a little bit sore, I feel like I didn't do something right. This could be a dangerous way of thinking, but it's what truly goes on in my head. Now, if I am extremely sore and can hardly move, that's a different story. Then I know I did too much and should rest until the soreness is gone.

But I am biased. Super biased. Pavel's way of kettlebells have helped me lose 50lbs and add 10lbs of muscle on me. Kettlebells is all I train with. Some swimming for fun. But for strength it's all about Strongfirst way of doing kettlebells (for me!)

I've never done them any other way (because I never touched a KB until CF)! I might have to try the Russian style and see if I can go heavier! Thanks!

Fair point. I guess as long as it's just superfluous and not inherently dangerous, I'll live with it. Given that I'm just now learning these movements, I'm light enough that I haven't run into the extra overhead aspect of it holding me back. I believe they use the "regular" Russian swing too, so I'll eventually get to experience the potential impact of it firsthand.

With Russian style or Hardstyle you can also swing doubles. I am starting a whole program on Monday with doubles. Double swings, cleans, snatches, double high pulls, squats, and snatches. But to reiterate with the swing -- you can go super heavy WITH proper form with the swing. I love heavy swings. :) makes my body happy! There is another kettlebell method called girevoy Sport too. It's such a unique way of doing things too.

Yes. I am a kettlebell addict. I know this.

(How did I miss this??? I am a huge Nicolas Cage fan. Oh, wait...I mean, I *was* a huge fan...and then I saw Snake Eyes...(ugh...what an awful movie that was)...and I stopped watching all of his movies under the assumption that they would all be just as awful...but this one looks decent. What other post Snake Eyes Cage movies haven't been awful?)

I have been doing boot camp classes 2 or 3 times a week since late winter, and I don't mind being a little bit sore, but there's no reason to go beyond that point. It's a matter of knowing your body, and not letting anyone motivate you to go beyond what you know you can safely accomplish. There are also times that I know I need to take an extra day off and rest from exercising so I can stay safe and come back even stronger for the next class.

I'm training for a powerlifting meet in August, and have hired a well qualified trainer to help me prepare.

In a single session (of which I do about 5 per month), I pay my trainer to do exactly what you're talking about, and pay him almost as much for that hour as these folks pay for an entire month of crossfit.

I asked about 'Lord of War' because this reminds me of that scene where Cage gets 'arrested' for a day out in the middle of nowhere:
Since your so concerned with the law, you must know that I am legally permitted to hold for 24 hours without charging you. You might ask why I would do that, and I can assure you its not because I enjoy your company because I don't. *No*. The *Reason* why I will delay you for *every sec* of the permissible 24 hours is I'm delaying your deadly trade and the deaths of *your* victims. I don't think of it as taking a day away from you but giving a day to them. Some innocent man, woman or child is going to have an extra day on this Earth because you're not *free*. So I will see you in 23 hours and 55 mins.

    Also:
(How did I miss this??? I am a huge Nicolas Cage fan. So do I...

...but not quite as much as I currently hate push press. As a man, I should excel at this movement (generally compared to women)...and yet my 3 rd score today of 20 was completely obliterated by a woman using the *same weight* for 55 reps.

    Ego crushed.
