I LOVE salmon cakes, but I hate cleaning the canned salmon. Totally didnt know you could get it without the skin and bones....(bones never bothered me, I would mix that in, but the skin creeps me out really bad)
Gotta get some more when I hit the store and try some of the recipes posted here!0 -
Growing up my mom made awesome salmon patties and I love the stuff. Now I make salmon patties with a lemon caper sauce, and steamed spinach. Yum!!! My daughter love them too. We also like to eat the bones, they are a great source of calcium and add a bit of texture to them.

Add Canned salmon, sauted mushrooms and onions, garlic to light pasta alfredo sauce. Serve over pasta with fresh ground pepper.
Hollowed out tomato filled with canned salmon, chopped celery, chopped green onions, chopped dill pickles and light mayo. Again with fresh ground pepper.
Excellent as posted earlier in white chowder soups.
Mix quinoa into salmon patties for added texture and protein.
Can be added to already intense flavored/spiced foods like chili for added protein and negligible taste difference. Stir fry dishes
Add smoked salmon to spicy pizza. Experiment with wraps, enchiladas and taco dishes. If you are sensitive to a "fishy" taste, disguise it in spicy dishes. Salmon is an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids for your heart health. Fish bones are softened by canning process and are a great source of dietary calcium.0 -
I make salmon patties instead of crackers I use Italian bread crumbs. Since the price of canned salmon has gone up over the past year or so I now use canned mackerel instead.0

I like canned salmon a lot, bones and skin!!
Try adding it to a cream sauce with a bit of onion, peas (canned, drained or frozen) When it is nice and hot serve it over split, fresh baked biscuits. Yummy!0 -
Mmmmmm! Salmon patties! My mother made really good ones, but I've always had trouble keeping them from falling apart, so I make salmon loaf instead. Tastes about the same, but it's easier for me to make.
ROUND SALMON LOAF
1 egg
1 c. milk
1/4 c. melted butter
3 slices soft bread, cubed
1/2 tsp. salt
2 (1-lb.) cans salmon, boned and skin removed
In large mixing bowl beat egg slightly; mix with milk, butter, bread cubes, salt and salmon, blending well. Pack firmly in greased 9-inch pie plate. Cover with waxed paper. Microwave at high for 9 to 11 minutes, rotating dish 1/2 turn after 5 minutes (Not necessary in microwaves with turntables. This recipe dates from pre-turntable times.) Let stand 10 minutes before slicing. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
I've been known to halve the recipe (except for the egg) and it still works just fine.0 -
Costco's canned salmon is good. In fact, we just had it tonight. Just be sure to buy the boneless skinless kind. There is some you can buy with skin in it and it is super fishy (we couldn't even eat it). Our favorite recipe with it is Rachel Ray's salmon cakes. It calls for 3 cans but I made it with 2 and with only 1 egg and it was enough for 4 of us. Even the kids (9 and10) like it!0

Salmon Patties it is!
My wife LOVES em' but she has to cook them on a day I work because they make the house super smelly. I can tell from the driveway when she's made them. They don't taste near as bad as they smell.0 -
I adore salmon in all its myriad forms - raw, cooked, frozen, fresh, canned, smoked - you name it, I'll happily eat it. Personally, I prefer the canned salmon with the bones in: loaded with calcium, and I love the texture. Still, it's not to everyone's liking.

What did you use for calorie count on this. I just made some, my favorite, with the Double Q brand, town house light cracker, onion, egg, then baked it. Creole seasoning...very good.

I make a great crustless salmon quiche
2 cans salmon
sauteed veggies (mushrooms - zucchini - yellow squash - onion)
1 T flour
1/4c reduced fat cheddar
3 egg whites
1 egg
Tabasco
1t pepper
Cook up your veggies
mix flour with salmon and cheese
whisk egg whites and egg together - add Tabasco (few drops) and pepper
combine salmon mixture and veggies in a pie plate
pour egg mixture over
bake at 400 for about 45 minutes
It's delicious - very low calorie - and high in protein.0 -
I like fresh salmon, I like frozen salmon, I like smoked salmon and I really like lox.
However, canned salmon is a no go...That stuff is putrid imo; my cats won't even eat it lol (believe me, I tried to get them to eat it because I didn't want to waste the can of salmon just because I discovered I didn't like it.)0 -

I agree. The salmon with bones and skin is really fishy. The smell really gets me because it is so strong. It really grosses me out. I like canned tuna or salmon without skin and bones.0 -
I use the smaller canned 'wild' salmon ( crown prince or wild planet) and add:
-some variety of light mayo
-finely chopped onion
-chopped dill pickles
-a tsp or two of stone ground mustard
-some lemon pepper
and smash it all together with a fork. Then I either use it as a dip for crackers or as a sandwich spread. People tend to gobble it up either way. Sometimes I add avocado or celery, and sometimes instead of pickles I use capers. If I'm putting it on a sandwich I usually add a layer of romaine lettuce over top of the spread.
Plus, I could be wrong, but I don't think the wild salmon tastes as fishy as the non-wild kinds.0 -
Fresh salmon is incredible.
Oh I know. I wish I could have it all the time. My fave is to get a whole de-boned fish, stuff it with lemon slices and fresh herbs, and throw it on the grill.
Canned is really different, though, huh?

I have no problem with canned salmon and I usually have a couple of cans in the pantry.
I like to do a "salmon salad" just like I do tuna salad. Mayo, mustard and greek yogurt combination celery, crushed pecans, some dry cranberries,or chopped grapes if I have any, curry and pepper seasoning. Spread on bread with lettuce and tomato or I stuff 1/2 a papaya. Both my husband I like it that way.0 -
Salmon patties would be my stand-by answer (egg, crushed crackers, salt, pepper, minced onion, etc), fry in a pan w/ cooking spray and enjoy w/ tarter sauce, ketchup or alone.
But my healthier suggestion would be to make a fried rice w/ it. If too fishy you open the can, press the liquid out, add a little water (to rinse) and press the water out again - then use it. Add veggies of choice, cooked cooled brown rice, scrambled eggs, a little soy sauce, chopped garlic and rice wine vinegar.0 -
With canned salmon? Personally, I eye it suspiciously from across the aisle at the grocery store. I try to pass quietly, lest it become aware of my presence.
This... I'm lucky enough to live on the east coast (Rhode Island). We have some pretty great seafood places that I can get fresh fish at. Canned stuff just stays on the shelf around here.0 -

2. Feed it to the dogs. Seriously, I tried to make a salmon salad and it was inedible. The dogs appreciated it, however.

ah yes as someone mentioned - used to have when we were kids. I love canned salmon - best quality - on a bed of lettuce with vinegar and a sprinkle of salt. Also lovely mashed with a bit of venegar - put on toast and pop under the broiler - yum! Kipper snacks are fabulous this way too and those little bones - so full of calcium - we all used to fight over them
Of course you can not beat fresh wild caught copper river salmon, mmmmmmmmmmmmmm0 -
