    and finally this...

What if it's November 2013, and I finally hit goal weight and it's starting to get cold out and I need like 5 pairs of jeans STAT. and 5 sweaters and a coat all in my new size. and I researched my purchases late at night on the internet and know exactly what I want. and I have precisely 20 minutes to make that purchase so I run in the store. and precisely at that moment the kiddo's school calls to tell me he needs something. and I take all those things worth nearly a grand to the checkout counter. Are you gonna tell me you are gonna get all butthurt over whether or not I ask if you had a nice day, and are gonna d!ck me around for my receipt and play 20 questions with me if the manager can see I'm non communicative as much as they can see you at least tried? This is not customer service. It's just not. Most places I shop already have all my email phone "capture" anyways. Nice to feel like prey though, thanks for the lingo. And thanks for the small talk to make me feel special when I'm buying but how about at MY convenience okay. As the customer and all.

    Wow.

call me crazy but I'd have told that cashier to shove it up her **beep beep beep** I'm there to pay for my goods, I'll say my hi's, thanks, and byes but I'm going to be on my phone and if she still refused please feel free to find yourself another job, maybe in a call centre where you can talk to people all day long because I would kick up the mother of all complaints ! Where exactly does it say in a stores policy I a. have to talk to you, b. aren't allowed to be on my phone at the time !

    kmt.....craziness, don't be wasting peoples time !

admittedly I've never done it...I hate talking on the phone, but for those who need to or like it/want to, it's their right !

You will not be a happy camper if Im standing behind you in line. About 6 months ago I twisted off on a phone clown holding up the line at Subway. I then stepped in front of him & told the sandwich preparer to put his order aside and fix mine.

My favorite tactic is to honk loudly at a red light when I see someone playing with their phone. The dummies hit the gas without a thought and lurch forward! LOL

BTW If you give your zip code, phone number, or address, your contact info will be used to market you. There are "Location Services" that the store will contract with that will get your name from your credit card and index it with your zip code and bingo.

Wow what? Someone can't imagine that someone might be super busy one day, and that it might be super rude to DEMAND that person's attention and just make themselves the center of the universe when it's actually their JOB to make the other person feel like they are? I've worked on that side before, it's not that hard to read people and to adjust yourself to the customer's needs and to get over yourself enough to do your job. I'm so tired of the "oh we're the little people" and everyone has to cater to us mentality. It's a fatal flaw in character to beleive that the whole world has to revolve around you SO MUCH that you can't even understand when it's your job to help someone else and that it's your JOB on the line. No one is advocating kicking cashiers on the shins or calling them "little people" just have some decency and make the process easier NOT HARDER and don't be judgemental. It's not in your job description. Neither is making up rules just cause you think you're too important to handle a transaction for someone who doesn't chit chat with you.

Yeah but only one of them is getting paid to be there and should suck it up. The other one can just take their business elsewhere.

Guess it makes me a jerk... but if someone said to me "Get off your phone or I won't serve you" I would say "Get me your manager so we can chat about how I'm probably not shopping here again". :blushing:

I don't feel that ME being on the phone is anymore rude than the cashier and the bagger discussing their weekend plans... or the cashier saying "How are you today" and not even looking me in the face because it's just automatic to say it and not give a damn about the response. Not there to make life long friends with the clerk... I'm there to get my stuff, pay for it, and get out.

I usually do say to whomever I am speaking to "Just hold on a minute, I'm checking out" and keep quiet long enough to swipe the card and answer questions if there are any from the clerk. Good enough for me... and seems to work for the clerks in my area too.

I agree with you. Most of the time the cashier isn't talking to me or even looking at me.

If you knew how to read you'd see I'm against phones in the car. but I'm also against weirdo's using that as an excuse to do something more stupid and dangerous. I'm not condescending just some people are so self important and entitled. And think things are funny, that are not. And how do you know what I tire of, I hardly know you and think this is the first time I have seen a post from you? Have you been ridiculous in the past and imagined I was talking to you when I was talking to someone else? Probably in jest?

....and the honk is seriously childish but not even in a funny way. in a desperate way.

I actually am, most of the time. The workers I see are just regular people not putting on airs or demanding a pedestal. We all get along great and get thru our business with the common goal of completing the transaction in a polite and efficient manner. Nobody thinks they are so self important to demand anything out of line from the other. Maybe I only shop at good places though. Maybe it depends where you are shopping?

In all fairness, it's normally company policy that the cashiers not carry on their own conversation while serving, why is it different for the customer?

Because the cashier is a resource, and the customer is a consumer.
And yet, we're both people and manners cost nothing. I wouldn't do it as a customer either, even as an obnoxious teenager. I always knew what was rude and what was not.

Manners do 'cost nothing' but... on the other hand... Here's what changed my mind about it / drives me to the self check out...

The local grocery store started a 'small talk policy' with their employees.

I was really happy with the hi, how are you. Did you find everything OK? Yes/No Great/Let me get someone to help you. Quick, efficient, whatever.

But now... it's a crapshoot. Either you get an interrogation when you get to the checkout lane "Oh, magnums, cucumbers, a blindfold and a cheese grater, what are you doing this weekend? And then a bunch of follow up questions." Or, the Cashier gives you a random life story and holds you up in line.

Or worse, the person ahead of you is a chatty cathy too, and now the whole line is held up while the cashier and customer, long since finished with the transaction, carry on like long lost friends.

So at least in that particular grocery store, the phone comes out of the pocket and up to my ear. - Except - and this is going to sound really sexist - if the cashier is a dude. Because then I can get through with a simple "Sup" and I'm out the door in two seconds.

Of course in any circumstance of a transaction that requires conversation, put the damn phone away. Next time I see someone trying to hold a cellphone convo while arguing about coupons and item substitutions with a clerk, I'm going to throw their phone through a closed door.

A small talk policy would drive me to the self checkout as well, and I hate those things. :noway:

I am annoyed standing behind a customer who is talking on his or her phone at the cash register. It delays the transaction process and I frankly don't care to hear about their personal business while I'm trying to get through the line because I don't have all day to wait for some rude *kitten* to act like they are that important that they can't put the phone down.

it's the craziest thing ever, but this is what i do... are you ready to have your mind blown??

"hang on a sec, i'm at the front of the line"

This -- I have a limited time to talk with my best friend (who lives several states away) ... We both use ear pieces and both will do the same thing, ask the other to hold on a moment. I pay attention to who ever is helping me, cashier, teller etc... Once done, a simple I'm back... We pick up our conversation where we left off.

what is there to pay attention to? you walk to the cashier...say or nod hi...then unload your basket.

Its very rude to be on your cell phone speaking to someone while leaving any or either person that you are "interacting" with waiting on either side of the call. Unless its an actual emergency, it shouldn't happen at all.

The level of self importance in this thread is ASTOUNDING!

Note to egocentric twits everywhere, despite your personally held beliefs, you are not the center of the world and do not need to have 100% of a person's attention. It's not a slight, it's not rude, it's just not about you.

It is part of my job to get at least 80% phone capture, and 50% email capture. If I skip through those steps without asking the customer for them and a manager sees, that's my *kitten*.
Now this is what I find rude.
It's not the cashiers fault but it is the fault of the business.
I hate being asked this question every time I shop.
If I've said no before I said no. live with it.
The cashiers unfortunately have to live with being told to be rude to customers this way
They should talk to the union.
Some cashiers in Australia have managed to get the upsell and intrusive details type questions stopped thru negotiations.

That's assuming the cashier has a union. Most retail and grocery stores in the US are non-unionized. If they were to try to fight to get the upsell and other type questions stopped, they'd lose their job. It sucks and is one of the reasons I am very happy to not work retail anymore

I work in a deli and it is super annoying when customers are on the phone and you have to say something four or five times because they're on their phones. It's also annoying when we call a number two or three times and no one answers, so we go on to the next one, then someone starts yelling we skipped their number. Well maybe if you weren't on the phone, you wouldn't have gotten skipped.
