I buy things when they are on sale/store special + I have a coupon. It saves money, but it also means my grocery haul changes from week to week. Even so, there are a few things that I cannot do without:
Almond milk--three times the calcium and a fraction of the calories of milk
Vegetables that are in season--they're cheaper in season (I also happen to subscribe to "The Fresh 20" and they offer lots of ways to prepare vegetables that are in season)
Fruits that are in season--they're cheaper in season (my favorites this time of year are blueberries and strawberries)
Citrus--Lemons, limes and oranges to cut up and put in the bottom of a big tumbler with water; the taste helps me drink more water all day long
Ice cream sandwiches--I generally buy the store brand (usually cheaper), it's a portion controlled snack that's got ice cream + chocolate; what's not to love?
Chicken broth--it's the base for so many recipes that I always seem to use it up
Eggs--great as an ingredient, great as an entrée; I love eggs
Rotisserie chicken--eat as is or use as an ingredient in other dishes; at Sam's Club a 6 lb. chicken costs about $5 (I can't roast a raw chicken myself for that amount)
Frozen chicken or beef strips (fully cooked, not breaded)--convenient go-to on weeknights, a great starter for quick home cooked meals; because it's frozen, you can keep a bag on-hand for a long while
Frozen vegetables (corn, butter beans, peppers, onions, etc.)--great as ingredients in dishes, and because they're frozen they'll keep until I need them0 -

I'm new and I've just started watching what I eat and I am trying to eat healthy. What are some good choices for simple foods? Right now I have:

i love smoothies with frozen fruit and protein powder. i also make pancakes using 1/2 a banana mashed with one egg and baking powder...cook it like a normal pancake, top with almond butter, and you have a great breakfast.
ooh, thanks for the tip on the pancakes. I need to try those and I need to try almond butter too. I already make smoothies every day but I didn't think of adding in protein powder. Do you just add the protein powder with your fruits and whatever else you put in the smoothie? I generally just do skim milk and frozen fruit in mine.0 -

100 calorie English muffins with 8 g of fiber, chobani yogurt, grapes, apples, cantaloupe, cauliflower, mixed greens for salad. My favorite dressing is light raspberry vinaigrette with walnuts from Newman's Own. Add a little low fat feta, and it's delicious! I pick up a couple Lean Cuisines just in case I'm desperate some evening. My faves are Glazed Chicken or Braised beef with sweet potatoes.0

I must have carrots, cheese sticks, lots of fruits and veggie, high percent dark chocolate (because I like it better ), Greek yogurt, chicken, spinach, butter. cheese, wine, etc.
I guess what i'm saying is I must have the entire grocery store in my kitchen.. lol0 -
