the world is making incredible advancements in science and technology. there is less violence today than at any point in history. civil rights are improving. etc...
but all of it is going too slow.
if this post is really asking about the news that broke a few minutes ago...that news makes me sad.0 -

I am a little bit more positive about the world, now0 -
Well, we are headed towards overpopulation within the next century unless there is some sort of catastrophic global event that reduces the population significantly.
I do think we've attained an unprecedented era of peace globally, even with things unstable in the Middle East. I believe that the internet has been a driving force in helping people understand that foreigners aren't evil and helping us to understand other cultures.
Technology hasn't progressed quite as far as I would have liked so far, but I have hopes for awesome things during my lifetime.0 -
a lot of data is showing the world population will plateau at about 10 billion in around the year 2100.0

I think the world has always been crazy.

powerful advances in medicine offset by even greater powerful advances in more ways to kill more people more efficiently.
Poverty and starvation co-exist side by side with wastage and wealth, education and healthcare should be available for ALL.
But, at least there are more good people than bad.
Oh...and all corporations are evil.0 -
In a word..... .. No, I don't think we are doing great.
Yes, we have great advances in technology, on average we are living longer and in the main we have better standards of living. But at what price?????
Pollution is everywhere now, be it oil spills, or discarded plastic bags and bottles. It kills the natural wildlife in ever increasing numbers so as a race, we are having to increase our technology to clean it up efficiently. Natural habitats are being eroded to fuel the demands of mankind.
And what is the result????
We can do so much more, so much faster. Information is everywhere and is regarded a good thing - the mobile phone really has become The Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy (guess I am showing my age there!), we have machines that go bing to tell us to do things, and with this faster paced world we still don't have enough time to spend with the wife and kids. Everything has to happen NOW! Great swathes of countryside have been buried under Tarmac and concrete. And this is progress?? Personally, since getting a dog and taking walks in the country to exercise him, I long for a time when we don't have emails binging out of every device, being on demand 24 hours a day via a mobile phone, having to drive at stupid speds to get to where I need to be, and not doing it because of the incessant traffic.
Take me back to a time without all this hassle so I can actually enjoy living without the ratrace and excess baggage that goes with it. There will always be the rich and the poor - and always will be and there will always be different issues to deal with in the world back then. Pick your own era but on the whole I think people had a far simpler and better quality of life without the modern technology and 'progress'.0 -

No. We can definitely do better. (my simple answer) I don't want to get into specifics and offend anyone so I shall just keep my mouth shut.0

I think we are a slave to the Media. I believe that the Media dictates how most people feel, how they view things and how they react. It's ridiculous. We will self destruct because of the Media...0

Actually, everything is fine.
As the population expands, new technologies will emerge allowing innovation in farming beyond what we can even imagine now. The idea that were crowding the earth is ludicrous. There is so much space available for people to live on that it's ridiculous. And, the food supply will be fine. It is not finite.
The main innovation is going to have to be eliminating imaginary boundaries that we have created. As humans, we will have to begin coming together, like the Beatles suggested years ago. We already have. We are very tightly tied by economics with several countries, and while some see this as negative, I am optimistic that it's a start of good things in the future. We HAVE to work things out with these countries now. We can no longer villinize them. They are part of our fabric now. As this continues to develop, and the old school people die, and the new school people will have more optimistic views about creating partnerships with other countries which could lead to melding together. Ultimately, this could lead to less or no war. Less or no hate toward other systems and beliefs and more understanding. It could be several powerful countries helping to rid of war by joining forces and not allowing the atrocities that occur today.
The fake boundaries humans have created with brute force is a major component that keep the human race from progressing more than it has, IMO.
Whilst I admire your optimism, I cannot share it. As long as there is religion, there will be war, and that is not a poke at religion. Religion is the single greatest cause of war and tension in the whole of history. Humans are just too cmpetative and dominating to live in perfect harmony, so even without the religios angle I cannot see your utopia.
Its a short life and I would like to enjoy it without the social pressures that we have engineered for ourselves - but being realistic there is a fat chance of that! As a race we are just too materialistic and must have the best we can get as fast as we can get it! Not a great quality!0 -
I feel like I had something insightful to say, but then I got distracted by the turtle.
Me too!0 -
Two things; there are too many humans on the planet, and we cannot seem to control our birth rate. This is so important to me ( zero population growth) that it's one of the reasons I chose not to have children.
And the other thing; global internet is one of our best achievements and possibly our worst curse, as well.0
