OMG Watermelon Calories!

Hi,
I was munching on some Watermelon for my lunch today and decided to log my calories. I used to use MFP faithfully everyday but stopped as i started Slimming World. Watermelon was a (super?)free food on SW that you could eat as much as you liked of, and I wondered what the actual calories would be.
so.. 1/4 watermelon logged in at about 320 cals.... i didn't believe what i was seeing so i googled it too... and yep... 1/4 watermelon IS that many calories!!
I've been doing 30 Day Shred the last few days too and i feel all those cals burned were such a waste on watermelon!!
i've searched this forum and some people say a calorie is a calorie... fair enough..., some people say to disregard the sugar content...again, fair enough... but when you have a budget of XX amount of calories i simply cannot justify 350-or so calories on watermelon.
Rant Over ... lol x

That's is quite of a bit of watermelon. o: I mean, your average watermelon weighs something like 20 lbs, so even without the rind, you ate something like 3 lbs. of watermelon. It can be surprising how many calories watermelon does contain.0
-
I had 3 cups of cut up watermelon with lunch yesterday and that was only 138 calories. 380 calories is a LOT of watermelon! I would be totally stuffed, lol.0
-
I eat entire watermelons. It's one of the most cleansing foods there is.
Such a shame people are afraid of fruit calories when they are consuming thousands of calories a day. Whatever else you're eating is not going to be healthier than the fruit.0 -
That's a lotta watermelon!0

I am seriously in love with watermelon and will budget my cals accordingly. That said I've never eaten that many cals in watermelon in one day. But it is sooo good that I can understand doing that conceivably.0

I can justify that. Its watermelon and its delicious! I could eat a ton of it.

320 calories for 1/4 a watermelon is a good deal to me, but maybe you should put it in to weight terms 1 oz of watermelon is 8 to 9 calories or 144 calories per pound that is pretty calorie light to me, especially when you compare it to other food lets say chicken breast the same ounce is 35 calories. Instead of one ounce of chicken you can have just over 4 oz of watermelon.
Also we men might not want to throw the rind away, since that is where the highest concentration of citrulline is located. Reference "Watermelon may have Viagra effects" http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/080630165707.htm0 -
That's a lot of watermelon.
Why aren't you eating a variety of foods for lunch? There's no protein in watermelon. Your body needs protein.
When I eat watermelon, I eat like a cup or so; 40 to 70 calories.0 -
umm...I can eat watermelon until I'm miserable and it's only like 400 calories. That's a LOT of watermelon as others have said.0
-
A quarter of what size watermelon? That's a vrey subjective and arbitrary measurement.0

Watermelon is delicious so who cares?! I eat 1/4 of a watermelon almost every day and I love it. They are only in season for such a short time, enjoy them while you can! Watermelon is good for you anyway. Lots of vitamins, lycopene, and it's very hydrating.0

Now I want watermelon! Yum!0

I know I say this about 300 times a day, but
Kitchen scale.0 -

I don't think some people understand that you'll end up peering a million times and watermelon helps burn belly fat. Its funny seeing people complain about fruit calories /sugars.0 -

otherwise, it's just guessing. I second this.

I envy the fact you had some watermelon to eat *omnomnom* I would love a huge chunk of it! Or watermelon slushie!0
-
That's actually not that many calories for that amount of watermelon.0

Agreed. Some watermelons are quite large, others are smaller. You need to measure in terms of cups, grams, or ounces. And if you do that, I'm sure you will find the calories to be much, much lower.0 -

Fruit contains a lot of sugar. Sure it is a natural food and has lots of vitamins, etc, but you still have to keep your calories in line. And I am fairly sure that the OP is not consuming THOUSANDS of calories per day.
If you eat 500 cals a day in fruit, you may be using up all your carbs for the day and taking away calories for proteins and healthy fats.
In all things, moderation is key.0 -

Yes. Watermelon has 0.3 calories per gram; weighing is the only way to know how many calories you have really consumed.0 -

I LOVE watermelon, but it can be my downfall because I can easily finish off a 3-4" slice in one sitting. Yes, I am peeing a lot for the rest of the day, but I don't pee out the sugar. A slice that size is probably about 8 cups of cubed, if not more. So that equals at least 400 calories, or 100 gr of carbs.
If I stick to only one or two cups, that's ok. But that can be very difficult to do, because it is so YUMMY!
Altho, in the summer time, I could probably live on watermelon alone. But that wouldn't be too good for my protein and fat macros. :ohwell:0 -
OP, you must be mistaken
If it's juicy, it has no calories. imho0 -
but at least some of it counts as water0

I was surprised the first time I did that too. I mean, most of the time, watermelon isn't even that ripe when you get it from the store. It's mostly water, and the sugar hasn't had a chance to store in there.0 -

Another voice praising the wonders of a kitchen scale. Scooped up a nice Oneida digital on clearance at WalMart for 18ish bucks. Best investment ever.0 -
That seems like a lot of watermelon, personally I can't eat more than a cup or two.
Unless it's watermelon jam...which i made last weekend. And I probably consumed about 800 cals of watermelon jam and crackers. Every last tasty calorie was worth it.0
