I rarely look around, I'm too focused. But I am also there at 4 a.m. so there are very few people there & trust me, the folks there at 4 a.m. are all about business

I look around, maybe not constantly, but I totally do. When I'm doing cardio, in between weight machines.... I don't stare, hell I'm lucky if I can make out specific features since I don't wear my glasses or contacts. Everyone talks about being so focused but I have yet to achieve that intensity. Blame it on the ADD baby.

When I'm on the elliptical or treadmill or somesuch, I'm totally into a book or TV show or trying to remind myself not to sing out loud, etc... so I never notice others, what they're doing, how fast they're going, levels, etc. I am totally oblivious to the rest of them.

When I'm doing my weights or the circuit - I can't help but look now and again. Just checking out what's going on - or wandering around during my rest bits. I've smiled and made eye contact a few times - friendly style, and with folks I see all the time. Really hoping I haven't been creepy... I'm just glancing about, that's all.

I had to stop myself from looking into the studio rooms, once. I caught myself watching their workout and making mental notes...
so, I told myself I'd just have to show up for that class next time, no staring! :-)

The only time I look around is when I'm on the elliptical, and that's because it faces towards the weights. I don't stare, I just kind of watch, look away constantly, or if someone's back is to me, I'll watch their form. But I don't ogle, I keep my head down when I'm in transition to another machine or set of weights. I don't need people staring at me, hell I don't even want anyone striking up a conversation with me, I'm there to get my work out done and get home ASAP.

I love the way my gym has it set up....you NEVER are facing another section. You may face their rears, but never their face ;)

I think its funny how many people are so serious in gym they cant have fun and look mad and pissed. I have a blast when I'm at the gym and met some pretty awesome people while there.

I understand some people are short on time, I'm talking bout people who actually get mad or appear mad when someone "disrupts" them. Give me a break. hahahahhaha!!!!

I don't look around because I don't want to see how many creepers are looking... I work out on military bases though: there's a crap ton of guys in every gym. Especially the weight rooms! I get frustrated walking to the pullup bars, so i just keep my head forward and ignore the fact that i am surrounded by guys who oogle.

I'm not that social with strangers, especially in a gym setting. I'd be there to get it done and leave.
It's not a hang out, chit chat, look around environment for me. I prefer to be alone when I work out.
Probably why I'm a runner and not a gym rat.

I try not to look around to much for a variety of reasons. Primarily, I am highly engaged in lifting my weights and have no desire to break that concentration. Beyond that however, I do it for the purpose of being polite. When I first stepped foot in the gym I was very self-concious of my form and of my body. Not having people looking and judging me helped me grow over the years, and I pay it forward by not looking at others who may also want some 'gym privacy'. Further, being a male in a university gym, I find it important to respect the privacy of all members (regardless of gender) who wish to workout without being ogled.

Not saying I don't ever sneak a peek, but I try not to.

Everyone should be like this! I'm super self conscious in the gym cuz of how much I'm sweating and red in the face.... not what I want the world looking at lol... but when I realized no one cared abt what I looked like- that's when I was really able to start focusing on my form (with running, not lifting).
I try not to look at other people cuz u never know who's in the same boat...

I try not to look around because I don't want to be rude or come off as staring. If I do get caught looking around, though I tend to give a nice smile and start a conversation if the situation calls for one.

Oh I would soooo not get any working out done on a military base gym. I once visited my friend on a base and every morning, I would sit out on the front porch and watch the guys PT on the field across the street. Absolute bliss.

Well, first of all, let me start of by saying my stats are about 6'0 120 lbs. Pathetic. I know. I've been like this for all my life, a walking stick. Well, I've decided enough is enough, and said I'm going to join a gym.
Well I was terrified, A skinny piece of crap like me entering a gym, everyone's going to laugh, point, and kick me out, but I just told myself, remember all the people who ever made fun of you through out life, it can't get any worse then that, and use that as motivation. So I did.

I entered the gym and my freakin legs were shaking, no joke. I have a routine that I am going to use, but today I said I'm just going to go in there and get a feel for the place, try a few excericises and gtfo. Well I walk in there, and I just see a bunch of bikes and treadmills, then the weights behind them, I was about to throw up i was so nervous, so I just jumped on the first treadmill in front of me. I turned it on, and watched the lifters.

F, these guys were HUGE. I mean MASSIVE, I said no way in HELLO am I going to go in there, so I got off the machine, and started to walk towards the door then stopped myself, I said no way, I came this far, and I'm sure they wont' really care. So I mustered enough courage, walked over there nervous as hek, and just walked straight to the curl rack.

There was an average guy next to me curling, I don't know looked about 30 lbs, so I figured I can probably do 20, so I try to pick up the 20's. AND I COULDN'T. The guy next to me was staring at me, and told me "Try something else" then points at these pink ones on the floor. Apparently his friend behind him was watching and started laughing. So I turned around and I wanted to say something, but I just couldn't, I pick up the pink dumbbells and start curling. Well his friend starts making smart remarks like "WHOA THIS GUY IS A BEAST" "AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHNOOOOOLLLD" and other things. I swear, I was getting so angry, I started to get a flashback of all the people who ever made fun of me in my life, one by one, and his voice in the background. I was steaming, all of a sudden i turn around out of sheer anger, it was as if I blacked out,and fling the pink dumbbell in his face. BAM, I HIT HIM. Then I realized, OMG DID I JUST DO THAT??!

He yells out WTF, then he pushes me against the rack, and him and his 2 friends surround me thats when I realised these were a couple of guys who were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and she said "You're movin' wth your auntie and uncle in Bel-air". I whistled for a cab and when it came near the licence said "FRESH" and it had dice in the mirror but anyway I could say that this cab was rare but I thought nah forget "YO HOLMES TO BEL-AIR!" I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 and I yelled to the cabbie "Yo holmes smell ya later!" Looked at my kingdom I was finally there to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-air

Looking mad and pissed is how some people pump themselves up before a heavy lift or intense workout.

Some like to breathe deep and visualize the lift.

    Different strokes.

    EDIT: ^^^ aware strong copypasta

Maybe my point was missed. I mean no matter how focused you are on your workout you can still be civil and pleasant to others

Not sure how that is relevant....Yes, even when I was at my heaviest I always showed common courtesy and nice to others.

Are you surprised that fat people can in fact be happy?

generally people are really chill in my gym. More family-oriented than anything else. Everyone is in their zone so it "seems" intimidating but we're all just regular people.

I can multi-task... I can smash it on my workout and still check the talent... plus I'm watching for a free space on the racks... If someone looks at me, I'll ALWAYS smile...
