The Miley Cyrus Eruption

Honestly, I'm over it... I was really over it a few minutes after I watched the video (as I didn't watch the VMA's to begin with)...
I am more concerned with us possibly entering another war in the Middle East that we have no business going into...
As for the person I am quoting here. I completely see your point. The thing is I already have two strikes against me. If I were to talk about the extremely wasteful endeavor of going in to a country that has been engulfed in war for over 2000 years it would be a divisive topic and it would get locked down and it would put me at risk of writing something within that thread that could get me a third strike.
So in a way the moderators have trained me to play it safe and only talk about topics like this one.0 -
NOBODY CARES. And if they do, they have no life.
you cared enough to click this thread AND to respond. id say lots of people care.0 -
I dont think its so much shocking its more embarrasing becuase she is try WAY to hard to break from the disney channel imagin!0

Who wants to talk about Syria or various political breakdowns in this country? Too serious. :grumble:
I think a woman expressing overt sexuality always brings a certain hypercritcial crowd to the yard. People who want to argue she must be on drugs or lack self respect. Also, in this instance the people who would "SSSHHH" the modesty crowd are like WTF, because Cyrus's performance was also crazy awkward . I don't think it was really that raunchy given the venue (the VMAs). It wasn't the Teen Choice Awards. But seriously, girl needs some twerking lessons or to embrace that she's not a very good dancer but dancing anyway. I mostly feel bad because it was a bad routine and people let her do it. Like, I didn't get the impression it was supposed to be a goofy play on ripping off your childhood -- but more a literal expression. Somebody, somewhere could have injected some humor into the whole thing or Cyrus could have appeared more self aware and like she was taking part in the joke. Also, the whole issue of using African American women as props (which is hardly new concept, side eye Gwen Stefani and her harajuku girls).
I mean yeah. I get why people are talking.0 -
Oh and also in more important news. Neil Armstrong died at the age of 82.
Wasn't he someone's backing singer, that's terrible...................... I remember, it was the Police "Walking on the moon", knew I recognised the name0 -

Hahaha... I see your point. So I will stop right there... It's just frustrating that there are more important things going on in the world... and while I see the place that entertainment and controversy has in our culture.... DANG!!! Does it need to permeat our headlines for days? (granted I realize it's only been two mornings but still).... it's just not that critical... either let your kids watch or don't.0 -
I thought the same thing, Soldier. I could care less, the crap rap music shocks me more than anything. Who wants to hear "Stanky b****" (segue after Miley)?
I remember when MTv played not only music, but GOOD music. That's why I love youtube. Spent Sunday night listening to a Burton Cummings special.0 -

You're right, why would anyone bother about something that wasn't likely to affect them in any way when there are more important subjects.0 -
Thank you for caring enough to write the OP.0

You raise a very good point.
Perhaps it's because she, like many other celebrities, became famous as "innocent youth", and once they become older and try to shed the innocent image they original had, it's often over-the-top and shocking compared to the image they previously had.
Now, I'm also a little too young to know the process by which other stars did the same (other than Brittany Spears) so that might be why it's shocking to me. Shocking, but not surprising in the least. Perhaps it's shocking because of how completely vulgar, inartistic, distasteful and sloppy the performance was. I don't mind if a celebrity is wanting to do something shocking to get their name out there, but what she did just leaves a bad taste in your mouth opposed to just leaving you shocked and intrigued. Perhaps that's why people are shocked.
I also think that if it didn't shock ANYONE that would be a big problem - what kind of world would we be living in where explicit and vulgar sex acts on stage by a young girl whom is more than likely still idolized by many many children is normal and does not bother anyone? I guess we are already living in that kind of world, sadly.
ETA: Oh yeah, and Lindsay Lohan..and now Amanda Bynes...Xtina had her little stint too. I forgot about all these people - probably because I don't really care all that much about them. But I guess talking about them just disproves that last comment too
I wonder if it is really a case of these people being shocked because they a such good a decent people or is it more the case that they just want to be seen as good and decent people so they are acting shocked.
In my past I have started threads about conflicts in the middle east and the government overreaching with its authority and the responses are always things like, "Can we not talk about politics." this is my first thread about a pop culture event and I am seeing people coming out of the wood work suggesting that we talk about topics more in line with my regular threads like Syria.
Some of them might actually be people like me who enjoy talking about heavy topics but I am sure some of them are actually people who just want to be seen as deep people who care about heavy topics when in reality they don't care about politics and religion either. Since I can't distinguish this through the internet I generally give people the benefit of the doubt but I know it isn't 100% either way.0 -

Heaven help that people might actually want to talk about things that actually might affect them and will have a bigger impact on our lives than a girl trying to be a woman... or just shocking people so that we will talk about her, instead of based on her merit and talent anyway...
I believe that "artists" that have to shock people into talking about them probably don't have much of a talent, otherwise their talent would be what gets people talking.0 -
I actually think she has a nice voice. She has a lot of potential as a singer but she'll be remembered for this instead.
With that being said, i think I've seen blow up dolls with more sex appeal and less latex. Eat a burger. Put on some clothes and do some squats.0 -

i love how people look at the past with rose colored glasses. do you know who Madonna is? when MTV was quite young she was getting the same kind of attention and being accused of being vulgar just like Miley is now. nothing has changed.0 -
If I had been her mother, I would have been mortified. Why such talented people feel they have to cheapen themselves to get MORE attention is a mystery to me.0

I'm mostly complain about how it seems to be the "news" story that is permeating from the news outlets... in the forums, whatever... who cares what or who we talk about... but I don't see why it's a major story worthy of news ticker space... or space on the top of the news lineup. While potential war is buried beneath it all. I expect people on social media (including MFP) to be talking about it at least some... I expect to hear about it on my morning drive in... but I don't expect it to be the major headline on the front page of a news outlet.0 -

MFP is so ridiculous they dont allow for political/religious discussions. thats why they dont last long.
and lots of talented acts have used shock value. Elvis probably started it all.0 -

yeah, a year ago.0 -
I had no idea who she is/was until maybe yesterday. Not that I do now, but the news and the name are all over the internet, and yes, in multiple threads on MFP, too. Which sort of proves the OP's point, someone's really cashing in right now.
I don't want to know who she is. Can I please please stay ignorant about this one? Thanks. Really hard to unsee something once you saw it.0 -
Oh, ppfftt! I'm a 63 year old grandma and her performance didn't shock me or offend me. As a "dirty dancer" from the 1960's, I'm sure a lot of my moves caused a few gasps. Ha, a male friend and I even got kicked out of a school dance once because we were too "provocative." ***Snicker*** It's just 'dance.'
I went to my grandson's wedding last month and still rocked it. He loved my moves and said, "Grandma, I think it's amazing that you can move like that! I could watch you dance for hours!"
So hell, I rather enjoyed Miley's performance. (The foam finger was a nice touch!) ***Snooort***0 -

That dance probably broke Billy Ray's Achy Breaky Heart0

Hey people talking about her that don't like her:
You do realize you are providing free advertisement for her?
The more clicks she gets on YouTube from people being curious about the fuss, the more advertisers make, the more it sells, the more it will happen.
If you don't like it, quit providing free advertisement for her by talking about it.0 -

Not all attention is good attention0 -
Why would anyone be shocked? By and large our society has reduce the value of women (especially celebrity women) to the sum total of our body parts. How "attractive" those body parts are. What we are, or are not willing to do with said body parts. And, how good we are at what we are willing to do with said body parts. Whether it's fashion, beauty, athletics, childbearing, parenting, or the activities that go into making a baby, we are judged largely by how our bodies look/work.
Hers looks good. She apparently put on quite a show as to what she's willing to do with her body. Good for her. I hope she enjoys the attention. My 13 year old daughter thinks she's nasty. Which doesn't hurt this mamma's feelings at all.0 -

true. if she killed someone while drunk driving that would be bad but the attention she is getting because of last night is great for her and her career.0 -
Who?
I am SO glad at times like this that I neither watch TV nor follow the news. I assume she is some vapid "celebrity" who is trying to use shock tactics to gain publicity because their career is suffering?
Life is too short for that ****. Facebook, TV, the constant misery that is "the News" are just utter wastes of existence. There is much more to life than the modern day equivalent of The Coliseum. People should get outdoors.
...he says... typing on a computer... reading about someone called Miley Cyrus... oops...0 -

:ohwell: Darn you "The Christian Left group" on Facebook for posting the story today!!! ABC news had today's date on the article about his death on my phone so I assumed it was today... You are right. It was a year ago.0 -

I personally am not shocked.
I'm a little disgusted at people who believe Robin Thicke didn't know what was going to happen and who critcize her, but feel sorry for him (???!!!).
Also, I'm sad that she felt she needed to do something like that for attention. She's a talented actress (surprisingly) and could have a great future in the industry based on that and her connections alone. I'm sad for her that she doesn't recognize that and I hope she isn't Lindsay Lohan: The Second Coming.0 -

I get bored... And I knew you weren't talking about me... I just wanted to throw that out there.... misspellings and all.0
