Idea about what to do with space in the front yard
This is my front yard
We live around 120 feet from the road. A thought occurred to me the other day. Why not put a garden in the front yard. Honestly I couldn't give a rats *kitten* what other people are doing with their property. Grass, what good is grass to me? Fresh veggies, now thats another story. Considering our financial situation I think it would be a very intelligent thing for me to do. How would you feel about doing something other then what everyone considers normal?

I think a garden out there is a brilliant idea!! I've considered doing the same, myself, but, have a big garden already out in my too large of a backyard.0

i honestly thought what to do with the "front yard" was going to be code for personal grooming.0

That's what my husbands family did when he was growing up.0

Some simple 6x6 boxed plots would allow you to keep up a nice appearance and give you flexibility in planting and care. Probably no more than four of them.0

pretty space, you should get some baby lambs to eat that long grass.0

step 1) obtain cinder blocks
step 2) obtain rusty El Camino
step 3) place rusty El Camino on cinder blocks
step 4) remove wheels
your neighbors will LOVE you!0 -
Do it! Veggie gardens can be pretty too, just put some nasturtium seeds and marigolds around the perimeter:)0

A garden could definitely be good, plus not super visible from the road. If you're interested in less work and more chill though I'd go with a gazebo or something like that where you could put a fire pit and some comfy chairs.0

I have slowly converted my front lawn to raised veggie gardens and lots of fruit bushes...I'm ALL IN for edible landscaping! The key is to keep it neat and tidy. Otherwise the neighbors get pissy.0

Lots of people are doing similar things now, mainly due to food costs and concern about ingredients. There are some great videos on YouTube about urban gardening (saw one where a guy grew crazy amounts of stuff in a tiny front yard in L.A.). There are also a lot of books out currently about small scale "homesteading" and how to make the most food wise out of a typical suburban lot. I've gotten tons of them from my local library and there is some very good info out there. You really can make it look nice, too, if that is at all part of your goal. Personally, I hate to water/tend any plants that I can't eat! And, if the neighbors object, you might can bribe them with veggies...........0

Well we tried in the past with one in the backyard but, lets just say the animals had a ball, deers, raccoons, bears. When it was all over we had nothing and the animals had a feast. Gardens are actually quite nice looking as well.0

Personally, I like the idea of edible gardens... front or backyard and if I were your neighbor, I wouldn't care as long as your property is kept up... BUT more so than the neighbors, I would find out what the city ordinances are, if there are any. I know there are a few cities that don't look too kindly on people who are trying to live more sustainably.0

Do what you want, it's your yard. If anyone says anything to you about it. Say nothing. Stare at them in the eyes, without blinking. Then bust a flex, much like that of your photo.0

I've seen that! I think it's a great idea. My also inspire others. My husband plants veggies in oddball spots in the yard. If we grow them in our front yard I can see the neighbors picking our veggies.0

I put in pea gravel so I won't have to mow a lawn, even with as tiny as my yard is. Then we started lifting big rocks, so now our pea gravel is accessorized by atlas stones, rocks for throwing in the Highland Games, and other big rocks for lifting. Apart from the atlas stones, they just look like landscaping accents. And as far as the atlas stones go, well, too bad if people don't like them. Good luck picking them up to get rid of them! :laugh:0

My uncle would crap himself if he saw that! He has a huge shrine to the Skins in his living room.0 -
how about a redneck hot tub in the front yard like on a recent episode of Duck Dynasty?0

Sounds like a wonderful idea. We have a 4x8 foot planter in our back yard. Love it!! Out new backyard at the house we are closing on may not have the space in the backyard for the garden. We'll probably have to do it with the scrap of side yard we have. We have a good front yard but I'm sure our HOA will be all over us if we convert the front into planter boxes full of food. Got to love TX where HOAs are the norm... or at least this part of TX.0

While the ediible landscaping might be appealing be sure to check into local codes and restrictions. I have heard of numerous cases where the city /suburb/neighhood /homeowners association require and limit certain things when it comes to landscaping. that includes the ability to have gardens (vegetable and flowers) in the front yard or even visible from the road, ok behind a fence but not without. it would be bad to put in a garden only to have rip it up or pay a large fine becuase of silly laws. the other thing to consider since you mentioned a tight finanacial situation, is that new gardens can be pricey - soil, fertilizers, mulch, stakes, trellis, fencing, tiller, shovels, other tools, etc. so it might be a longer term project to get it all done.0

We don't have as much front yard as you do, but I did put a small garden into one of the flower beds this year. It didn't hold much, but so far none of the neighbors have come toting pitchforks and torches. Next year I'm putting a bigger garden in the back yard instead. I say go for it.0

That looks awesome!0

You know...
If you are creative, you could make a vegetable garden look like landscaping.0 -

Go for it. Digging up turf and making beds is really, really difficult - ie good exercise. For me, anyway. I need a rest every 15 minutes!0
