I recently read The Fast Metabolism Diet (http://www.fastmetabolismdiet.com/) and according to that, eating clean WILL make you lose weight faster. It's something about how the chemicals your body needs to break down the food you eat for energy instead of storing it for fat are produced by your liver. But your liver also filters out all the toxins you eat (ie additives in food that aren't actually food), and if its busy doing that, its not making the chemicals you need to keep you from storing fat. I got the book from the library so I can't double check the exact reasoning for you, but that's the gist.
This is nonsense, and that book is bunk. If the best explanation is "your liver is too busy with those toxins to prevent you from storing fat" because of "something about the chemicals" then.... no.
Forget everything you read in that book.0 -
People are so quick to judge!
What works for one may not work for another, everyone has different circumstances (different exercise goals, weight targets, body fat targets, PB targets and different metabolisms).
Choose what you want to do, but Im sure no one whos commented is likely to be qualified to give there opinion.
Eat clean for one week see how you feel (sticking to calorie goal)
Eat unclean for one week see how you feel (sticking to calorie goal)
..... then choose the one that makes you feel the best (more energised and awake) SIMPLE.0 -

Especially considering you can get broccoli on a pizza, but can't get pizza on broccoli.
HA! I had exactly the same thought, you could totes do that!0 -
Healthful eating is a thing, you guys. And, it does matter. So, is enjoying food and having variety. Pizza, beer, ice cream is all part of life. But, you need to be mindful of your macros and think about health. If you don't think at all about it, why the fukc are you even on this site? Just stop being arguing douche bags and relax.
Yes, you need to be mindful of macros.
You don't need to be mindful of how "clean" your food is, unless you're talking about the absence of dirt.
So...you're saying I can't eat dirt? Douche.0 -

Sigh. I've got this one on my kindle, because I always read the junk science books tossed around here, but I only got 25 pages in before it made me hate myself. And, by association, hate the very idea of "clean eating" just a little bit more than I already do.0 -
no, its eating at a deficit....clean eating is not putting chemicals in your body. still have calories.0
-
I know what you mean by clean eating, and I have to say this.
You lose weight by a eating a calorie deficit no matter what the food is. if you have like 1,800 calories to eat in a day, some clean foods might have less calories and therefore you could eat more of it than some other food choices. Thats the advantage to some clean foods (i.e. fresh spinach vs frozen spinach souffle that you buy in the grocery freezer.)
Clean eating might enable you to feel better, because you would be eating more fruits and veg rather than hotdogs and cookies.
so if you feel better choosing those foods, by all means do so and dont let anyone tell you not to. if eating that way and you see weight loss, it is then shown to be working for you. Some people feel the need to eat cookies and cake on their diet, others feel they want to choose fruit and veg and that is fine too.
Do what YOU want to do, and dont let anyone stop you or make fun of you for wanting to "eat clean". Especdially if it works for you.
Well said.
No, eating "clean" will not help you lose weight faster.
thank the Lord, i finally worded it right0 -
Does eating clean have some advantages over just simple calorie counting?
As long as you are getting all your essential nutrients I doubt it. You can lose weight eating only twinkies... Wether or not you want to is up to you.0 -
just once it would be great for a discussion on the subject to not have people distort arguments, reduce points to absurd/extreme conclusions, or branch off into mini battles. once.0

This is 100% true, however twinkies are quite low if not entirely devoid of the nutrients our body requires. It's not impossible but quite likely you will find it very hard to consistently stay in a caloric deficit eating only twinkies to satiate your hunger.
When you eat "Clean" (notice the quotes) you're eating more nutrient dense foods that tend to be more filling for a number of reasons including the sheer solid volume of the food. This in turn makes adherence to eating in a caloric deficit much easier.0 -
Clean eating is better for your overall health. There is no argument about this, and if you argue, you're just being a douche.
OK, I'll be a douche: In about a year and a half, my resting heart rate has gone from ~120 to 51, my blood pressure is in the low end of normal, I'm off my BP meds, my blood work is "absolutely perfect" (doctor's words, not mine) and I've lost over 300 lbs — all while eating "unclean" foods. So by what standard, exactly, is my overall health worse because of the "unclean" foods I eat?0 -
I did mention IIFIYM, but of course everyone wants to ignore that part.
Because that part has nothing to do with your "eating clean is better for your health" nonsense!0 -

Absolutely... I was just pointing out that it can be done. I would not want to myself, nor could I imagine anyone else would, but you could do it.0 -

I guess the "health" part is relative. After a loss of 322lbs, your health is far better then it was before. Could it get better by eating "clean", maybe but not necessarily. IMO, if you feel good, look good and health markers are good... Full speed ahead.0 -
I eat clean and the only 2 major weight loss benefits ive experienced are 1. sodium (since i gave up processed foods and most restaurant food in favor of homemade whole food, i find myself less bloated and a couple of water lbs less on the regular) 2. clean eating enables me to eat less while feeling fuller
but at the end of the day its all about cals0 -
In terms of calories in and calories out.. no, that's just math
I've found, however, that when I eat clean I can eat larger portions and be more satisfied and less likely to binge. It also means that I have lower sodium, so I retain less water.
So for me, it helps, but its not absolutely necessary if you can control the portion sizes. And... when you hit maintenance, you can continue to control portion sizes0 -
To me it all works, just a matter of how you want to get there...0
-
Not unless you eat less clean calories than you would have eaten in dirty calories.

clean eating is the way to go, there is quality calories and junk calories, we fill up on quality foods now We dumped the junk, detoxed our cupboards and eating lots of veggies and fruit and good quality meat. We feel so much better with so much more I mean more energy, and we are geting lighter on the scales every day we do not miss the nasty sweet stuff.0 -
You'll probably just feel better if you eat clean.... or even clean-ish.... which is what I tend to do. But weight loss will be comparable.0
-
Not sure about losing weight any faster but you may feel a WHOLE lot better.0
