Sorry, been really sick this past week. Anyone ever had a severe ear infection that ended up affecting their jaw and lymph nodes? I have a chronic problem with infections of the ear - this is my worse one ever.
Started on Tues Night (keep in mind that I was picking up my father from rehab to come home on wed morning) - went to doc on Wed morning before picking dad up!! - got an ear wick (something they put in your ear when it closes up too small for drops to get in - the wick basically absorbs the medicine and takes it into the ear) anyway got the ear wick and the antibiotic drops. Was worse on Thursday to the point of crying (embarrassing) and not being able to stop - was at work - that was the worse part - my husband called on his way to work and ended up taking off work himself and cane to get me and take me to a specialist - (I don't believe I could have driven myself - the pain was bad) the specialist then took one look at my swollen "FACE" and put some numbing drops in my ear to temporarily stop the pain while he examined me - --it was bad - my ear didn't even have indention's or a curve in it any longer it was swollen like a balloon along with my jaw and that side of my face and neck - CRAZY for an EAR INFECTION. Went home with 4 prescriptions - 1 ear drop antibiotic, 1 oral antibiotic 1 numbing ear drop and pain meds. Pain was bad all day and got worse before it got better - hubby stayed home for two days and took care of me and my father along with my daughter's help. Laid in bed for 3 days trying to manage swelling and pain - The first night was awful - I cried alot and was embarassed - but my husband just took care of me and helped me get through it - he has never had to take care of me before - i am always the one who takes care of everyone else - at one point he had to call the dr in the middle of the night and ask what to do since the pain meds were wearing off before time to take more - dr told him to give me 800 milligrams of iburophen during those times - so vidocin at a high dose and the ibuprophen and ear drops and my husbands continuous love got me through the next few days -- got out of bed yesterday and tried to make it without pain meds - didn't work - ended up back in bed -- tried again today - made it out of the bed and with only minor pain pills - Going for follow up with specialist later this morning - face is still swollen and can not hear out of that ear - very annoying but the best part is the pain is controllable now after what 6 days - like I said CRAZY for an EAR INFECTION!!
Don't even really care about what the scale says this week - I didn't eat or drink right this past 6 days and not sure if I should even weigh-might wait until next week after I get back to my routine - because if I loose then it will be due to not eating enough and then I might gain due to eating again but not back to exercising.....oh well - time will tell and as long as my pain goes away - sooner or later so will the weight!! Happy Tuesday all... well I got to the gym last night and did 30 minutes on the stairmaster, worked up a good sweat and my ankle felt pretty good... so I am hoping that is a good sign. I got to the gym at 4:45 this morning and did my chest workout, light weights today since it is a deload week... but it felt good and my day is off to the right start.
Goals... Saturday I start a new cycle of my workout... each new cycle has resulted in new Personal Best for each of the 4 lifts. I want to continue that trend over the next 4 weeks... and hit the 300lb squat mark!
Kinn-- Glad to hear your daughter was ok, couple days she will be good as new!
Susan-- sounds like a busy day, tired is not the end of the world, and I hope the boobs are good... if you need a second opinion I can give a hand
skinnyjeanzbo - lucky you with that pasta! It is what I miss most of all since giving up carbs.. sunday gravy with rotini. Have a great week at the gym and get ready to run from those Zombies!

Lauriek70 - nice work with the run! Breathing is the key to a strong run for sure, but it should not hurt your throat!

pienthesky32 - You explained why on days off I work out very first thing in the morning. Given the chance to be lazy I will take it every time! So days off I wake up, get gym gear on and head out the door!0 -
@Charlotte~I’m glad to hear they determined what was going on with your daughter and were able to perform the surgery without complication. What a bonehead your SIL is, I can’t believe he was sleeping while she was in surgery. I’m glad you are able to be there to help out with the kids.
@Eeyeore~Ouch, I’m so sorry for the ear infection. I’ve never heard of them getting bad like that, but guess they can. I don’t have experience with ear infections so can’t relate, but when I had my tonsils out (I was 35), I experienced ear pain that I cannot begin to describe – had me in tears, that pain was 100x worse than my throat! Glad your husband was good about helping out and taking care of you, hope you are back to 100% soon.
@Karen~That sounds like a cool site, I enter a few races a year but hope to expand that next year. I’ll have to keep that site in mind.

@Gorilla~I'm always impressed with how early you get to the gym, if I went before work I'd have to go at 4am - that is just too early!
@Laurie~Hooray for the run! Breathing is hard to control at first, your trainer is a runner so I’m sure she’s giving you some guidelines but the clue is to breathe from your diaphragm and not your chest – a hard habit to break. There are breathing/yoga exercises you can do though to help you strengthen your diaphragm to make that easier though. Something I learned from a running coach a long time ago is to time my breathing with my footsteps – breathe in, take 2-3 steps then breathe out.
Tuesday Goals~I need to be a little better about getting my dinner logged, my evenings are busy lately and time gets away from me. So my goal this week is to be more conscientious about getting my dinner logged.
Exercise Goals:
I am nursing my quad right now, not sure if it’s from running Saturday but a huge knot seems to have formed in my left quad and it’s a bit painful, so I didn’t go to the gym yesterday – went home and played Wii Tennis/Wii Fit. Then did some yoga and foam rolled my quad, which was very painful. I’ll have my trainer look at it tomorrow if it isn’t improved.
Monday~Wii Tennis/yoga DONE!
Tuesday~Rest Day
Wednesday~Training Session
Thursday~Rest Day
Friday~Gym
Saturday~Running Drills (gym or outside)

For those that don’t know or are always looking for exercise ideas without the use of equipment or a gym membership, MFP has a new partner site on their blog, Sworkit, I downloaded the app to my phone yesterday (free or $.99 for premium version) – it’s interesting. You indicate the type of workout you want (strength, cardio, yoga, etc.) and the amount of time you want to spend at the workout, then it puts you through a routine. There are videos to watch if you aren’t familiar with a specific move. Kind of a cool app.

Ok, so my usual routine on Tuesdays and Thursdays is to drop everyone off from 6:30-8:30, come home, have breakfast and check FB and MFP until 9:00 and then work. Today after Gorilla and skinny jeanz encouragement and request for a full report, I decided to try my first "running" in 16 years. Here's what happened... Walking, walking.. Hey no problem, I've got this. I'll try a jog from the end of the path to the bridge about 25 yards. First observation: my legs won't move. Well, they kind of move. My knees don't lift, I am WADDLING and if my ligaments could talk it'd be four-letter words all the way, baby! So, I kind of did my little goals five tiny "runs" that my walking self would have lapped twice, but I am going to enter 3 minutes of "jogging" into my exercise log anyway. Yeah, yeah, first steps and all that. I'm not discouraged. It did, though, feel like an out of body experience. It was like borrowing a friend's car - unfamiliar even though you know how to drive... and... "Dude...! When's the last time you cleaned out your car?!" Yep, nothing like starting to get at the denial cobwebs like a little huffing and puffing. I felt like I was shining a flashlight on the cockroaches in my fit memory of me corner and instead of scattering they were hunkering down and giving me the finger. I didn't get to do my sixth little run because of not one, but two charley horses in my calves, "Honey, we tried to give you a chance to stop, now we're pulling out the big guns", but I walked them out and did my last minute burst, anyway. So then, I now have a little route which I shall repeat on Thursday. I'll spare you the details from now on, but since I was composing this message to you all as I was "running" (someday I may be able to write that without the quotes), I thought I'd share it.
Now to the important stuff:
@Charlotte, God is good and your daughter sounds like she was in great hands. I hope for the speediest of recoveries for her. I'll say a prayer for you and your son-in-law, too. Your daughter was a gift to you... and she picked him You all sound like good people who love your wonderful daughter a lot.
@Eeyore, I'm so sorry for the pain and frustration you're feeling. That stinks. You're a strong woman, but I hope some of that burden is lifted soon.

Hi Everyone! I must apologize that I have not been the most supportive recently. I am completely stressed to the point I have gained 7lbs. I am still going to thereapy and working on me which has unleashed some demons I had, college has started back up which has me busy, my son is a senior and pics are driving me nuts preparing for them and learning how to fix my house has me on edge. I basically am just trying to maintain without feeling like a failure.0

Eeyeore - OMG - your ear infection sounds horrible and so painful. You're so fortunate to have your DH to take care of you - I'm glad the pain has subsided and you're on the mend now. I hope your hearing in that ear is coming back. :flowerforyou:
Gorilla - what are the 4 lifts you're doing that your meeting your Personal Bests in and at what weight? I'm just curious I'm not competitive (yeah, not much, I'm gonna copy you of course, you're the one that got me started on my squats, thank you very much!)
And what is a "deload" week?
Kah - you give such good advice - that yoga is infusing your wisdom thoroughly. Hope your quad is feeling better by tomorrow.
Elena - when I first started WALKING I was disgusted in that I waddled to. I don't know if you're just being funny of if you felt you were actually waddling or not, but its a frustrating feeling. I am so impressed with your efforts to incorporate running into your walking sets and you will do so good if you keep it up. Your a winner in my book. And you write pretty darn funny too! :laugh:
WalkingQueen - with so much stress in your life, it is very smart to just concentrate on maintaining as you said. I know the stress of therapy and personal discovery and it is like earning a PhD in personal growth, its like pulling teeth out the back of your head. I'm so glad you stopped by and let us know how you're doing. I think of you often and was just wondering how you were doing. Work, school, and a senior is a lot on your plate. Don't sweat the 7 lbs. Just keep working on yourself.

Well today I am faced with 2 problems. My brother left the old stove sitting next to the condo dumpster and now I am told it has to be INSIDE the dumpster. Hmm.. And I need someone to change the electrical cord on the new stove. And my brother is not going to help on either problem, he's busy after work for the next week, so I'm on my own. I've got my thinking cap on. I'm considering exploiting these A/C/ repairmen and offering them money to toss the old stove into the dumpster for me. They are big and young strapping men - so its a possibility. Well I'll let ya know!0 -
WEll I guess I can list my goals here.... for you Robin.
I am following a routine called 5-3-1.... http://www.strstd.com/ Using that site you put in your max lift for each of the 4 exercises and it builds your routine with weights you should use. I lift every other day. Week 1, you do 5 sets of 5 reps. Week two it is 5 sets of 3 reps, Week three is a set of 5, a set of 3 and a 1 max lift. Week 4 is deload week to let your muscles recover.
Right now I am at for this months goals
Shoulder press = 170
Deadlift = 315
Bench = 250
Squat = 290 (I really want 300 here!)0 -
@Elena~I’m sure it didn’t feel funny at the time, but your description of your first try at running was quite entertaining. There are a couple of things to consider – first and foremost I think you “woke-up” some muscles, they just thought “what the heck is this woman doing to me?” :laugh: Without getting too descriptive, there is something happening with your body that makes it feel like your “waddling” when someone overweight attempts to run. Because the thighs are bigger our legs tend to whip around to compensate for the “thickness” that is there; this can cause pain or discomfort in different areas, especially hip flexors and IT bands. Its not fun to think of, I know. As you lose weight and inches, this reaction goes away. :happy: The charley horse in the calves occur from pounding the pavement too hard, so the clue here to is try and run “lightly,” easier said than done I know. But try to jog very slow at first, almost do a jog at a quick walking speed (say you’re only walking at 3.5mph, just make a jogging motion instead of walking) and land on your mid-foot not your toes. Landing on your toes will cause shin splints and calf pain – this form is something that will change as you lose weight and become more fit, but it’s the way you need to start out. Okay, second bit of advice. Say your first walk/run out of the gate is 30 minutes – do a five minute warm-up, then alternate with a walk/jog for 20 then a 5-minute cool down. With your jogging segments, start out at 15 seconds (very slow pace) and build up from there; as you become more fit and your endurance improves so will the duration and speed at which you can run. I'm so proud of you for trying. Remember, it’s a process so don’t get discouraged because it was a little awkward the first time – I will get easier, I promise. Oh, and most of all don’t forget to stretch really well afterwards – hip flexors, quads, hammies, calves, etc. Skinnyjeanz and Gorilla run a lot more than I do, so they may have some other advice. But that’s my two-cents.
@Holly~I’m sorry for all of the stresses you are going through, don’t forget to take time for “you.” Take all of the stresses one day at a time and try to work in a short walk at lunch or in the evenings to clear your head.
@Robin~I remember one time when I lived in an apartment I threw out an old sofa and the office called to say I needed to place “inside” the dumpster. Geez, like I could lift heavy furniture! I found two kids in the neighborhood and gave them $20 to do it.0 -

Eeyore that sounds so horrible about your ear. I have had some bad sinus infections that made my face swell with bad pain but nothing like your describing. I am so happy you are starting to feel better.
Elena I loved your running story. You write very descriptively. I am sure as you continue it will get easier and we have some gret runners on here to help cheer you along.
Holly good to "see" you. Everyone else is right. Things sound pretty stressful right now so just take it one day at a time and take care of you.
afm: I had a great time yesterday. I finally got back to zumba class which kicked my butt, but I still had a great time.
After that got some pre cleaning done in preperation for todays big cleaning and then it was off with my mom and a family friend to the Alabama concert. We had an awesome time and I am fairly sure I must have burned a ton of calories since I was doing what I call chair dancing during the whole thing. I love music and sitting still when somehthing I like is playing is pretty much impossible. Between exercise calories and just being really busy all day yesterday I came in way under and it felt good to finally do that again. My main goal at this time is to enjoy having my husband home but to not let it slowly deteriorate all the habits I have been building like it did last time. Tuesday goal: Go walking/running again today. I had a killer headache when I got up to go to the gym this morning. It only went away about an hour ago.
Skinny: He never gets to a gallop, just a brisk walk and maybe a little trot. He used to run all the time when he was an apartment dog.
Charlotte: Hoping for a speedy recovery for your daughter. Glad they figured it out and took care of it.
Eeyore: Oh wow I've had one bad ear infection but I had ruptured my eardrum and I don't think it was nearly as bad as what you have been going through. I hope you get better soon.

@helena--yeah, I'm so slow and gunner's so big that he only gets to a gallop if I'm doing a sprint (rare when I have him with me) or if I'm going downhill. :laugh:
@tammy--I'm glad you got back to your zumba class--I know you really enjoy that form of exercise. As far as using the hubs as an excuse for bad behavior, I know what you mean. I quit smoking in March, but I have a couple of friends who smoke and I use them as an excuse to cheat and have a cigarette now and then. And I know it's me and not the proximity of the cigarettes b/c I live with a smoker and that doesn't induce me to cheat. :ohwell:
@gorilla--thanks for the info on your routine. I'm trying to move more and more into the free weights section of the gym using both barbells and kettlebells. I've been doing 5x5 for the compound lifts and then 2 or 3x5 for the isolation exercises. I'm not even going to list my max weights b/c they will sound really wimpy compared to yours.
@robin--hope the AC and stove issues are both resolved quickly.
@holly--YAY--you're back!! I just worte on your wall the other day b/c I was missing you and voila! you're back! :flowerforyou:
@elena--I loved your description of your running. (Notice I didn't use quotes) I also used to think that I needed to run at a certain pace for a certain amount of time before I could truly call myself a runner; however, that's just not the case. You wil continue to do it and you will feel inept or inadequate at times. You will even feel like a fraud as you lace up your shoes and don all of your running gear knowing full-well that most of your time will be spent walking. You will worry about what others think of you (I used to start all of my running stints as I rounded a corner b/c then when I had to quit 30 seconds later, anyone who saw me wouldn't know I could only run for 30 seconds--for all they knew I had run 5 miles before rounding that corner :laugh: ). In reality, anyone watching you admires you--and when you see other runners out on the road, they will nod or give you a wink, or even some kind words of encouragement. Still you will doubt whether you are truly a runner, but somewhere along the way that will all change. You may not even realize the transformation happened, but you will find that you miss running on the days you can't get outside or to the gym. You will sign up for races and friends will say "You're doing another one?" with admiration (and maybe a bit of jealousy). You will not care about who you beat on the course as long as you beat your previous time. You will go shopping for cute shoes and come home with yet *another* pair of running shoes.
@kelley--sorry about the quad injury--those are the worst! It seems you can't do anything without using your quads. I really injured mine when I did the Rugged Maniac and it took weeks to heal (of course it didn't help that I ran a 5k while it was healing :blushing: ). Take it easy.
@eeyeore--sorry about your ear infection--that's stinky. :grumble:
@charlotte--glad your daughter's surgery went well--hope she recovers quickly.

Tuesday goal.... catch up to Tom and Kelley's steps on Fitbit- HOLY GUACAMOLE! Those two get some steps in! This may be a long term goal, because I am pretty sure I would have to walk to work in order to get close to what they log.... but it is at the top of my list. :bigsmile:
Short term... get at least 3 days this week where I log over 5k steps. Baby "steps", right?
I did take the stairs once today... my little Fitbit is pushing me to do my best.

Ok so not nearly as active tonight after school. In fact I came home feeling like I was catching something ate a snack (chicken breast) and slept for an hour before getting Izzy from her dad's. Then we ate supper (roast beef from the crock pot) and visited my parents for a bit. I have some grading I need to do because Midterm grade are due Friday (how in the world are we to midterms already!) Izzy has ballet tomorrow so I can get some done while waiting for her.0

Gorilla and Kelley- I know running should not hurt my throat but I think my sinuses were acting up which made it harder to breathe normally while running. Just to remember to breathe through the nose and not the mouth. Needless to say, I hope I am not getting a sore throat.
eyeore- Hope the ear infection goes away quickly.
Kinnurse-Glad your daughter came through surgery without any complications. Hope she can come home soon.
Another busy day for me but at least I did go out and socialize with my meet up group. I really enjoyed the conversations and started making plans for the weekend.0 -
so just a quick fyi. I was craving comfort food tonight so I put together a casserole my mom made with just a couple small tweaks and was pleasently surprised when I put it in the recipie tracker that it came out to the calorie count it did. I mean pasta ground beef and cheese should only net bad results but under four hundred for a normal sized piece. Going to have some cheesy broccoli with it and still come in under for the day:bigsmile:0

kaye- my knees are totally good. I have 125 degrees flexion and only a pinch of pain when i ride my bike up hills.....as i discovered tonight. Otherwise no pain. I find that my legs ache at night though....probaly because i am doing more walking than i have been able to do in many years.

charlotte- box your SIL about the ears!!! your daughter will still need to take it easy when she is home. Hope he picks up some slack0 -
@karenleona--that's great that your knees are doing so well. That's a testament to your hard work and strong fitness going into the surgery. :drinker:
@tammy--the casserole sounds yummy. I find that in general, meals we prepare at home from scratch tend to be lower in calories than prepared foods or restaurant fare. Of course, when I say "from scratch," I mean cooking store bought pasta and such, but didn't Carl Sagan say "If you wish to make apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe"? :laugh:
@laurie--I know there are some nasty cold bugs going around our school. A lot of my colleagues and students are sick. I hope you aren't coming down with something. Try Zicam--I was a skeptic, but it really does work if you take it at the first sign of a cold.
@anna--I know, right?!?! I can't believe it's almost midterms for us as well. :noway: Good luck with the grading. :flowerforyou:
@nicole--that's great that your fitbit is motivating you to move more!
AFM--well, I only got 1 paper graded. :ohwell: After posting here earlier, I started grading and then looked at the time and realized I still needed to go grocery shopping and do laundry. I thought I might get more grading done at home, but I got caught up with phone calls to my parents and then my friend who's supposed to do the Zombie run called to say she can't make it. I'm sad she won't get to come, but I have a couple of other friends coming so it's not a big deal. Anyway, it's almost 11 pm and I'm still finishing laundry, and I'm just too tired to grade now.
Fortunately, my juniors are watching a movie Thursday and Friday, and I've already talked to my student teacher about running one of the two classes so I can grade. He will observe my lesson with the students during 7th period, and then he will take over for 8th period. It's really just discussing the archetypes in the movie and similarities in themes and characters to the novel they just read. Most of the period they are just viewing the film so pretty easy to teach.

Hi All, Another late night. My daughter is home from hospital, and I've been running the kids around to their various activities, preparing supper, doing cleanup and trying to get my daughter to rest. Feel like I need to take a hammer to someone (sil would be first choice). Not being helpful or compassionate at all. Even balked when I asked him to go to the pharmacy to pick up some pain meds for my daughter. Want to shake him but he probably wouldn't understand what the problem is. Fortunately, she's doing okay other than being sore and tired.
The kids have been great but tomorrow I have to take the 14 yr, old for a dental extraction. She's being sedated for it so will have to watch her carefully in the car. Its about an hour and a half from where they live and then I have to go home for a bit to grab more clothes and medication as I think I'll be up here longer than planned. Will need to check my cat as well. She's used to me not being around much but I hate to leave her for more than a couple days without someone checking on her.
I've managed to stick to my food plan for the most part but not getting in enough water the last couple of days. Need to check that.Got to run and get some sleep. Need to get the little ones on the school bus before I head out with the older one. Will probably check in late again tomorrow. Drink your water everyone. :drinker: :drinker: :drinker: Charlotte0 -
Karenleona--I'm jealous that you are pain-free. I just don't know why I am still having pain. I would think that after all of the weight I have lost and all of the walking that I do, I wouldn't have pain. I am starting to feel like the original story of the Little Mermaid. When she traded her tail for legs she had pain for the rest of her life. I'm starting to think that I have traded my bad knees for pain. I sure hope not!
Charlotte--so glad that your daughter is okay. Sorry SIL isn't stepping up to the plate.
Tuesday goal: I'm starting to think long-term, and wondering if I could set a goal of reaching 100# lost before Christmas. If I can do that, I could possibly reach my goal weight by my birthday in May. In the meantime, my goal is to just stick to the program, and "just keep walking, just keep walking, just keep walking."

@ Anna - I struggle with squeezing in exercise. I hate getting up early, but if I don't I'm so exhausted by the end of the day. I worked out tonight about 6:30, but it took everything in my power to go. Normally, if I can squeeze in a morning workout, I do a lot better. It's all about balance that's for sure.
@ Elena - You've got some great advice on here. I've learned a lot myself so thanks for bringing up the topic.
@ Pie--I'm thinking I need a mental health day very soon. I've been going non-stop it seems. Calgon, take me away!!!
@ Skinny - I just get back last Friday night and we're traveling this coming weekend, but we're coming to your beautiful city. I'm bringing Cyrus and my sister to Chicago for a quick weekend. We arrive Friday night, going to Wrigley on Saturday for the Cubs vs. Braves game, then touristy stuff on Sunday before we fly out. I can't wait!!!
@ Charlotte - Thoughts and prayers that your daughter has a speedy recovery. I know she's very fortunate to have you helping out during this time especially with the kids. I'm sure this is one less thing on her mind. You're a sweetheart!!!
@ Kelley - We'll be right behind you on the cruise. We go in April. Princess has the ticker going so it's been fun watching that go down. Cyrus is getting so excited and it's 7 months away.
@ Kaye - I really thought some of my aches and pains would go away too. Even tonight on the elliptical and treadmill my shins were throbbing. I keep hoping one of these days I'll be pain free. You too!
@ Laurie - I agree with Skinny. I never thought Zicam would work, but it did wonders for me too. Hopefully, you can get some rest this coming weekend and nip this thing immediately.
Today was a good day with my eating and hit the gym tonight. I'm still feeling really tired for some reason. I'm about to log out and head to bed, but I keep stressing about the days ahead. Will I get my work caught up? I need to find a new bread supplier in Houston. I'm working on a roast beef project. Salads are in round 3. I need to pull together a soup analysis. I've got dessert suppliers coming out of the wood work. I need to verify the monthly pricing. I need to send out the rest of the invoices for our convention. Personnel changes taking place in the office. Possible office relocation. This is just work stuff. Cyrus has all accelerated classes in middle school and he's stressing big time so I'm trying to keep him calm. The scale is moving so slow even though I believe I'm doing everything right. Trying not to get frustrated, but why is this so slow from some and quicker for others? Sigh. When will I work out tomorrow? I get worked up when I can't squeeze in an exercise. I need to get ready for the weekend away in Chicago. My mind is just going non-stop all the time. Thanks for listening.0 -
Wednesday... I have open house night for my kids school tonight, so I did not have to go to the gym before work and will do some sort of cardio after. I am thinking treadmill but it always ends up bothering my legs so maybe row machine and elliptical. We will see how the mood strikes me this afternoon.

Wednesday Wish: Patience. This was my wish last week and I'm sticking with it. I stay so focused on so many of you because you've been making these life changes and I know it didn't happen overnight. It's been years for some, but you're getting there. This will be me too and I just need to be patient. I was reading an industry magazine and the article was "Come Get Happy." I really needed this today and thought I would share the highlights with you. Enjoy!!!!!
Most of us think that if we're successful at work, we'll be happy, but we've got it backwards. Being happy will lead to success.
1) Put a positive spin on things: You may have had a stressful day, or a difficult week, but if instead of seeing this as bad, you can turn it around and view it as a learning experience.
2) Start really appreciating the good: Write things down that are good in your job and your life, and you'll start retraining your brain to think in different patterns.
3) See the big picture: View your job as part of your career, even if its just a stopgap to pay the rent for a few months. Whether this is the right job or not, going to work every day is part of your career plan.
4) Surround yourself with happy people: AMEN!!!!! Start off by being one of them. If we see someone smile, yawn or complain, our brain wants to copy these emotions. If you find people toxic, stay way. AMEN!!!
5) Don't forget things are short-term: Knowing something is bad is temporary is key (like eating that candy bar or piece of cake). When our brain thinks something is permanent, that effects everything. Keep things in perspective. Remember - this too shall pass.
6) Changing your mindset towards the pursuit of happiness works best if you share with someone else. MFP friends!!!
Make it a great day. Smile. Post often. Make good food choices today. Try to move a little more than normal.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I'll be gone for a couple of weeks. Taking our 'summer' vacation in the fall and going south to Tennessee and Virginia. Really looking forward to the r and r. Taking gym gear and hope to work out while I'm gone. I may not be able to log in. See you soon..0

Karenleona--I'm jealous that you are pain-free. I just don't know why I am still having pain. I would think that after all of the weight I have lost and all of the walking that I do, I wouldn't have pain. I am starting to feel like the original story of the Little Mermaid. When she traded her tail for legs she had pain for the rest of her life. I'm starting to think that I have traded my bad knees for pain. I sure hope not!
Charlotte--so glad that your daughter is okay. Sorry SIL isn't stepping up to the plate.
Tuesday goal: I'm starting to think long-term, and wondering if I could set a goal of reaching 100# lost before Christmas. If I can do that, I could possibly reach my goal weight by my birthday in May. In the meantime, my goal is to just stick to the program, and "just keep walking, just keep walking, just keep walking."

Kaye - after I had my knee replacement I continued to have pain - where exactly IS your pain - is it in the kneecap area or in the back of your knee?
You might want to consider going back to a PT and being evaluated on HOW you walk and see if there are strengthening exercises you can do for your knees. I'm not telling you to do squats like I do - at least not as far down, but doing a very minimal squat will strengthen the muscles around the knee quite a bit and make all the muscles involved in walking so much more strong you won't believe it. Again, I am not pushing you to do deep squats - I started with very shallow squats - only going down a few inches. But I think seeing a physical therapist would help your pain a great deal!0 -
Weds. Wish - I wish I had more energy and less pain in the mornings. Here it is 12:30 pm already and I have done nothing but sit on my *kitten* since 8:30 am, drinking coffee and corresponding and watching tv. This is an average morning for me. My wish is to change my morning routine to where I am more active in the mornings. Of course, this is dependent on my prednisone kicking in and allieviating my aches and pains. I tried tlh's suggestion to wake at 4:30 and take the meds but found that did not work for me. I have to take the meds with food or I have a stomach ache, so no good. Sorry for the whine.
Yesterday I did get my new air conditioning installed and it works great. The guys were so nice and they threw my old stove into the dumpster for me. Today the electrician came and got the stove plug end changed and the stove is working. The house it all torn up and I have to vacuum and put back chairs and pots and pans and other kitchen items and all will be back to normal then.0 -

@Kaye~I agree with Robin, you may need to consult a PT (or your doctor) for some suggestions of exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles around your knee. I didn’t have knee replacement, but had to do a lot of strengthening exercises for those muscles after my knee surgery last year – it helped tremendously.
@Robin~I’m sorry for your continued pain, wish the prednisone would kick in sooner. As a positive spin, sometimes it’s nice to have lazy mornings.
@Tammy~I get excited when I put recipes through the MFP recipe builder and it comes out healthier than I think it might!

Wednesday Wish~The next couple of months are going to be super stressful, so wish for things to go as smoothly as possible so I don’t go crazy and so I can stay focused in other areas of my life.
My quad feels a little better today, still going to have my trainer evaluate it though.
