detox and fasting

I'm trying to detox my body i've already lost water weight with the diet and exercise I'm on but I feel like i need to detox all the sludge in my colon so I'm starting a saltwater flush regimen and I'm starting my fast tomorrow I've slowly lowered my food intake to 1 meal a day and now I'm not eating nothing for 2-3 days to allow the saltwater flush to work it's magic my question is other than not thinking about food how can i feel full. I know sucking on peppermint and eating ice works but i'm wondering if there's any vitamins i can take to help me with the hunger pains?

FFS. Did they put something in the water today?

Please, stop this nonsense. Your colon does not have sludge in it. You are not dirty, bad, or unclean, no matter what some quack told you. Your digestive system was made to digest food. That is its function. You have not hurt it by eating your entire life.

Eat at a moderate deficit and move around. repeat.

Eat. That is how you feel satisfied. Your colon is pretty well designed to take care of itself if you provide sufficient nutrition, water and dietary fiber.

Your body is designed to detox itself by digesting food and eliminating any toxins and waste through the bowels and colon, there is no sludge left behind. A saltwater flush sounds so dangerous, and could seriously damage your colon. Please do not do this, it could kill all the good bacteria in your gut that you need for proper digestion of food.

If you really feel the need to cleanse, eat a very high fibre diet for a couple days, but make sure you also get good proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

NOTHING will help your hunger pains except food

    EAT. NOW.

Your colon will thank you for the food

Don't do it. Food is how you fight hunger. The "cleansing thing"? Yeah, NO.

    Yep.
As others have said, there is no need to "cleanse" or "detox" your body. Just eat at a moderate calorie deficit and the rest will take care of itself.
But if you really want to poop, add lots of fiber and water to your normal diet. That should do the trick.

    Specific Salt Water Flush Dangers:

altars critical pH and mineral levels in the body
    kills all beneficial intestinal bacteria
can overwork the kidneys as they attempt to regulate the sodium level in the blood, which has just been dramatically thrown off balance.
excess sodium the kidneys can't eliminate quickly enough, accumulates in the blood, essentially "thickening" the blood, making the heart work harder and causing your blood pressure to rise.
    causes electrolyte imbalances
    can cause edema
some individuals have reported "bad reactions" to the salt water flush, ending up bedridden for several days.

I am confused, OP. Are you trying to live a healthier lifestyle or are you trying to commit suicide?

I don't understand why fasting and detoxing is all the rage. The only time anyone should fast is when their doctor tells them to for a medical procedure, but that type of fast rarely goes more than 24 hours.

Please go and have a nice meal and maybe do some good exercise.

Why....do that to yourself, anything you would lose from all the bathroom breaks you will be taking. Will come back full force and you will just end up where you started.

I hope that no one who is just starting on this site see this thread and think it is a good idea. I am sorry, but this is the most ridiculous idea! Detoxes are not needed! Let your body do its job instead of doing something stupid like a saltwater fast.

The longest I've ever managed on a fast was 2 weeks, and I sipped water with about 1/8 fruit juice in it. What happens is your stomach shrinks. the first three days are the hardest, after that you sort of get on a high.

As to the salt water flush, I remember that being a groovy thing to do in the late eighties (along with the fasting). One friend did it. He said you sat on the loo and drank six litres of water absolutely balanced to be electrolytically correct, and instead of going through kidneys and treated as water, because it was balanced it went through the colon and came out like water out of a hose. Is this the one you're doing?

Here's my response to it all:

    1. there are some complete, complete nutters out there. Evolution has had millions of years to get your alimentary canal right and it hasn't been designing it around colonic irrigitation techniques. During the victorian period where people basically only ate meat and bread, and no veges at all, they did have compacted muck in their bowels most likely. But you won't.

    2. vegetables are an incredibly good colonic cleanser. Amazing. Have a huge, and I mean huge, plateful. Make a giant coleslaw and eat the whole thing. You will poo like a trooper the next day and it'll all end up squeaky clean in there! And you won't have ruined your mucus layer and bacterial flora (or is that fauna?) all the way through your digestive system.

3 and by far the most important to us dieters:

I worked out last night that if you don't eat at all and your maintenance requirement is 2050 cals a day: guess how much fat you are capable of losing?

2 kg a week. That's right. That's all you can lose. 2050 cals is equal to 293 grammes of fat (If I did that right.)

It is so not worth it. It is so incredibly not worth it it's just a joke.

Starvation, complete lack of eating, is a con. it really is.

This is one of those bad ideas that totally deserve all the mocking they get.

OP, please don't do this to yourself. Diarrhea and starvation are horrible weight loss tools.

    Plus one from me.

The only thing the detox industry successfully detoxes is all that nasty green stuff that otherwise accumulates in your wallet. They feel the need to 'helpfully' remove it by transferring it from your wallet to theirs via the magic beans they sell.

You have a liver and kidneys. Their job is detoxification. By which I mean an actual useful process that, if it stops happening, will kill you within days. If these organs weren't doing their job you'd know about it very quickly. You wouldn't merely feel 'bloated', 'run down' or whatever other fake 'symptoms' the detox industry lies about in an effort to get their grasping hands on your money.

When a body isn't detoxing properly it's in desperate need of medical attention, and the symptoms are very obvious indeed.

  • people fast all the time it's not going to kill me for a day or two, and i forgot to mention i have bad digestive problems and sometime I need a little help and i've been on RX fiber to help me go, I'm not crazy two days without food isn't bad i went four in the hospital when i had to have surgery i'm going to eat clear liquids like broths but i really need this and no salt water isn't going to hurt me just google salt water flush it's a hell of a lot safer and gentler than laxatives. It's very safe, It's like an internal bath, like an enima for your entire digestive system, if everything you say is true people shouldn't use enimas at all, things do bulid up, thank you for your concern I need to detox my system if i'm ever going to lose weight I've done it before and it kick started my diet pre-baby and after two days of fasting and detoxing i felt refreshed and my body was back on schedule and after two month dieting I was down to 140 lbs. I didn't fast the entire time just two days let me get that straight. Also if someone was taking money from me then why am i doing it for basically free with sea salt in my kitchen and water from my tap?
  • Your body detoxes itself. There is. NO evidence that detoxes help regular people. They're given to people with medical conditions, not folk who need to eradicate colon sludge
Just eat. Your body is made to get rid of toxins.

I believe in natural healing. I know not everyone thinks it's a good idea but please leave the rudeness and reply with a halfway intelligent comment. I don't understand why attacking someone who has a different opinion on how THEY are losing weight mean I should be bombarded with negativity and childish comments from some people, i respect the fact you think it's bad but you really should grow up and respect my question.

This weight loss approach you are considering is not sustainable and may be harmful for you.
If you want to keep the weight off long term then I recommend that you adopt a dietary approach you can keep at for years and as part of a healthy lifestyle. Research published just this week describes the mechanism of dietary yo-yoing of sudden fad-diet weight loss followed by weight gain. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-16/research-finds-key-to-why-dieters-ultimately-fail/4960536
In my experience, it was the adoption of a wholefoods plant-based (vegan) diet coupled with regular intense cardio workouts that has led to success. But not just success in weight loss, but improving my overall health and wellbeing.
If you are suffering from constipation - eat more fruit. Have some prunes in the morning. I also recommend that you take a good quality probiotic, something which has in excess of 20 billion bacteria. This will help to recolonize your colon with beneficial bacteria and get you feeling like a million bucks.
    All the best,

    Ben

Hi, I'm sorry you're feeling dis satisfied with the advice given to date. Do believe this though, we're all trying to assist.
I do 5:2, which 'may' be of interest to you, it certainly works for me and I can include gym and weight sessions with no problems, also there's a 5:2 group on MFP. A lot of folk don't support the 5:2 either, but at the end of the day it's about making sustainable, hopefully informed choices.

To be honest I don't know about your salt flush regimen, but enough folk have raised red flags on here that I'd suggest you investigate it more than just a Google search on 'salt water flush', I'd also look at 'salt water flush dangers' for one. I did the same on the 5:2 looking for flaws, but to date the fears expressed have proved to be unfounded, to me at least.

All advice proffered on here is just that, advice. You don't have to do any of it, but please remember you did post seeking comment and folks aren't just tapping away on their keyboards because it's Fun.

Hope you find what you're seeking, but colonic cleanses on a regular basis imho don't seem a healthy option to me.

Ok, this is one of my pet peeves. If you ask a question and want honest opinions, then please start a thread, and try and listen to the advice. If you want a friend that agrees with you, even if you are wrong, ask the guy that makes money off the idea that he is selling you.

Actually, I got it wrong. You drink the saltwater flush. And from the sound of it - it would be far less dangerous if it was used as an enema. 2tsp+ of salt in several litres of water. It wouldn't be doing your kidneys or heart any good, that is for sure.
