1200 Calorie Diet???? Seriously???

You meant well buddy.. you meant well.6

Different things work for different people.
I am 4'11", I weigh just under 105lbs and 1000 - 1200 works just fine for me.
True, yet I think you would agree that majority of people on this site are taller than 5' (statistics) and overweight.5 -
I'm only 4'11 I can't eat 2000 calories worth of food, and when I did, I got so fat I was off the BMI charts. I'm slowly working my way back towards being on there and then into the healthy range... by eating between 1100-1400 calories depending on how active/hungry I am that day. Calorie intake is different for everyone, I don't need anywhere close to what the average height woman needs, much less a man over 6 ft.5

1200 calorie diets work well for some people, and to each his/her own. But this is how I feel about them:
4 -
That being said, I am fairly tall and active, and I work out a great deal at high intensity levels with lots of lifting. So that's probably why I have to eat more.0

I am currently sticking to a 1200 Calorie diet and it works for me... thanks for your insight, but perhaps your advice would be better received if you didn't seem like such a know it all
Exactly! Each of us does what works for us.. I would think that if we're smart enough to live life day to day in this world that if one is hungry on 1200-1300 calories a day, they would bump them up a little.. 1200-1300 is far from starving yourself.. Also, it seems to me that most everyone on here (that I've noticed) has an exercise/workout routine as well..2 -
500 calories a day for weeks or months is starving yourself. 1200 calories a day for weeks or months is just fine and healthy. I get all the nutrients I need on those calories. I'm full with each meal, full of energy, and happy.3
-
I used to be able to eat eat that amount, but the lifting 4 days per week has made my hunger a bit out of control. I have been told this will level out soon, and I have just been upping my protein intake to deal with it. it is driving me a bit nuts at times.0

Water all day long eh...I drink when I am thirsty...too much water isn't good either.
Well, let's get this silly thing out of the way.
I know it's all the rage on these forums to say how there's no such thing as too much sugar, fat, and how all the "cool kids" have a pint of B&J's each night, but now water can be bad?
Just like everyone here says we don't need cleanses, since our body can handle it, we certainly don't need to worry about drinking too much water. That's why we urinate.
Show me an example where some non-ridiculous (e.g. a gallon in few minutes) amount of water was actually harmful to an individual. Note: Bear in mind that replacing water with the diet sodas everyone here seems to love would be just as "bad" for you as the pure stuff.
Drinking water is a good thing, and not some hippie conspiracy.

Me too! I'm pretty satisfied with my 1200 cals /day. I listen to my body. If it's not hungry, I'm not going to shove food in my face just so I can reach a certain number.2 -
In for the ensuing arguments.1

1. You do not need to "eat clean." (you can eat a variety of foods, lose weight, and meet nutritional needs)
2. Drink the lemon water if you like the taste, but it will do nothing for weight loss.
3. Meal timing is personal preference.
4. You can eat lunch meat and still lose weight. (and be healthy)
5. You do not have to limit condiments. (if it fits into your day, go for it.)
6. You do not have to limit dairy. (unless you have a medical reason)
7. You do not have to limit fruit. (fruit has numerous nutritional benefits)
8. The only reason somebody should be restricting sugar is because of a medical reason. (sugar is carb, so track that.)
Im not going to disagree or a agree with this statement. I will say that some people are so addicted to food that these are some suggestions to help them take the first steps from liberating themselves from the chains of being slaves to food. for some it not a matter of the food it a matter of not knowing how to get started. For others its a matter of not caring about what they put in there bodies (a lot of money or no money will do that) Ive found that after years of knowing the truth and disciple that I still need to get back to the basics after years of not caring about my eating. But now im back with an understanding of not only myself but others that ive come to observe and the courage to share what I know.2 -
Are you not serious about losing weight?2
-
I should eat around 1800cals a day to lose 1lb due to my 3hrs+ workouts a week, but after starting some new medication I have 0 appetite and feel sick after eating so my intake is around 1200-1400 a day now if that. I think if you cant make yourself eat more then not to worry too much. If I am ill or no appetite then I wouldnt force myself to eat just to make up the calories.0
-
I think saying a 1200 calorie diet is starving is a bit of a broad statement. I am only 5'1. I can not eat as much as someone who is 5'10 and lose weight. I do fine eating 1200 calories and my exercise calories.
^^This. For that matter according to the various TDEE calculators online my maintenance will only be around 1400 (most have me a little over 1370) Now, if I become more dedicated to consistent exercise I could eat more every day.5 -
9 times out of 10 when you see someone claiming that MFP has them on a 1200 calorie diet, it's because they are already close to being within the healthy weight range and incorrectly put 2 lb per week weight loss as their goal. Only someone who is overweight to the point of being obese (or close to it) can safely and consistently maintain the kind of deficit needed to see that kind of loss.3
-
OP...Listen, you do what works for you, and let people do what works for them. Just leave it at that.3

"All of these cases are associated with more than 5 L (usually 10-20 L) of water intake during a period of a few hours."
Thanks for proving my point.
It's funny. When someone mentions ice cream is "bad" for you, all the choir here preach about "moderation."
When someone says water is good for you, you get those discussing drinking unreal amounts (not very moderate, eh?) could possibly be detrimental.
Oh yeah, and make sure you post those links the next time everyone mentions how "good" diet sodas are, since that amount of them would also cause "water intoxication."4 -

I agree with the whole 1200 calorie diets but that being said....
"Starting every day with lemon water??? why...it can't hurt but no reason to."
Because as a cancer survivor I know that lemon provides a wonderful antioxidant that is a cancer preventative. Nothing to do with weight loss.
I am also losing a steady 1 pound a week eating between 1780 to 2100 calories a day. BUT, I work my butt off at the gym. When I was eating 1500 calories a day I starting gaining weight. My body was starving.1 -

I drink plenty of water and feel fine. My authority is just as good as yours.
Hint: Neither of us has any.4 -
Not even someone who is extremely obese should carry that level of a diet. Nutrition science consistently states that 1200 is the bare minimum a person should be eating.
I'll give you that smaller people don't need as much as bigger people but I have a really hard time believing that so many people of varying sizes and weights are at that bare minimum.
I weigh over 400 lbs and my doctor has NEVER recommended that I do 1200 calories. With a 1k cut every day, my goal is set at around 2600 calories. I tend to undereat, and I've noticed that if I do come in under, EVEN IF I AM NOT HUNGRY, I don't lose. Only when I upped my calories to the correct level did I start losing 6lbs a week.
I think most of this is bunk but I will support the idea that you need to really do what's best for you. Just because you're not hungry doesn't mean you don't need more. Your body will adjust and stop asking for food if you're not giving it food. The key is, if you have a high calorie day and you eat and you find yourself famished afterwards, you probably need more than what you're getting right now.11 -

Sorry, I feel the amount of water you listed (which no one recommends) is "ridiculous."
But carry on with water being "dangerous." Just don't forget that drinking the same amount of those wonderful diet drinks is just as bad.2 -
Losing weight realistically requires a very simple concept...take in fewer calories then you are burning (regardless of what those calories are) and don't restrict yourself to "clean" foods or limit something you love...why because you are setting yourself up for failure. If you want to exercise choose something you love that way you know you will stick to it....
This person knows what's up. I've lost almost 50 lbs eating "clean" when I want to and eating Taco Bell when I want to. I walk and hula hoop. I eat sugar if I want. This time it's actually working and you know why? There are no "Bad Foods!" just me using common sense day in and day out.6
