    It's only directed towards MILITARY personnel on base during their non-working times. They aren't going around giving tickets to civilians outside of base area, although... I wouldn't mind never having to see someone's buttcrack or underwear again unless I decide that I want to see it on my own terms.

    That's untrue. If someone is on the base dressed inappropriately they will be dealt with accordingly. It doesnt matter if you are military or civilian you cannot go to the PX/BX dressed like some thug gangster or hoochie mamma. Thats what Wal-Mart is for. Holla!!

    My town would be a lot prettier if the military would enforce a dress code here for civilians. Not that I really want that, but it would be great if people would choose to make a little extra effort.

    Well, if that's true... Then still, it's on base, and you shouldn't go into a military area dressed like a doofus. She made it sound like the outlying areas were going to have a dress code. The only people that have any type of dress code from the military OFF base, is military.
    Also, wouldn't it be fabulous if you could go shop at Walmart just ONCE without seeing something disgusting or just downright sad? Man... that would be great.

    If you live on or near a military post you might have to watch what your wear regardless of your military status. This kind of poster will be posted around the post and is enforced. Is this going to far? What is YOUR opinion....

    Makes all the sense in the world to me. Even at a civilian venue and at a civilian event, when escorted by a military officer, it is imperative that the civilian's dress code complies with the dictates of what is appropriate to complement the officer's military dress, as one would too, when attending military academy balls or select officers' balls, in full formal. [What I understood via NZ, Australia and the UK]

    It may matter what base you're on. Here I see kids with sagging pants and such around base all the time. Same for workout gear. There's a dress code but it's only for actual military members and doesn't include their families or civilians.

    This is correct. But the reason for enforcement is because these individuals are a military service member 24 hours a day, 7days a week, 365 days a year. Civilian attire is also considered a uniform which is actually a PRIVELAGE to wear. As with any other uniform that is worn there are regulations prescribing how it shall be worn.

    If youre in the military and have a hole in your jeans at the mall will the military police come and arrest you? Not likely, but the service member would be considered out of uniform and is subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

    Its a PITA to some and not a big deal to others, but it is one of the many sacrifices that people make when they sign up and take the oath.

    My experience has been once you are on a military base you are then governed by military law enlisted, civilian or otherwise.
    Frankly i'm envious If i could impose most of those standards on the general public it would save a lot wishful eye gouging.

    The military owns you when you're a member. So they do have the right to say what you can do off-duty, especially on a base or post. You also cannot wear your uniform in certain political situations, so as to avoid the appearance of the military endorsing a candidate.

    So THIS is why everybody gets naked when they get out of the barracks and come to our off-base house and yells "FREEDOM"! So much makes sense now! :tongue: And as we're in Hawaii, I do agree with lots of booty shorts! And when they do car washes, the guys aren't allowed to go shirtless (if on base). I was very disappointed.

    If you go on post, you follow the base rules. How is this possibly something to complain about? This is such a non issue it's ridiculous.

    Not an old rule at all. There have always been rules about dress code for military personnel, on and off duty, it's just not always enforced. As far as civilians, I feel the bases have the right to enforce a dress code on anyone, military or civilian, if they are on military property. It's the same as dress codes at work, in stores, even in some people's homes.

    I cant see any difference between schools enforcing school uniform, clubs/hotells having minimum dress codes, some religious places having dress requirements etc - if you don't like it, don't go there.


    I know some posters were tongue in cheek but I certainly would NOT want it enforced in the public arena in general though - that's a slippery slope to enforcing our arbitrary preferences on others for no good reason than they don't things how we would do them.

    I retired from the military almost 6 years ago and this is not anything new.
    The dress codes have always been there...sometimes they are hard to enforce so when they see the code being violated by many or they get lots of complaints they will reissue notices like this to re-emphasize the policy

    1: This is by order of the "Commander".
    Meaning, a member of the Military ON THAT POST must abide by these rules.
    I am a bit suprised by the "no swinsuit" rule. I have never seen that in all my years as a Soldier.

    The post commander can make the rules as he or she sees fit.
    Some are good and some suck.
