Donuts?

I am new to the site and just saw someone say he ate 800 calories in donuts. That would be way too much sugar, right? I go over sugar if I eat a few pieces of fruit.

I see a lot of people claiming to eat ice cream and cake and pizza and I just don't see how they can lose weight this way.

Also a friend on my list sent me a message and told me to make sure I "set my macros" right? What is right?

Should I not use what MFP gave me?

People lose weight eating all kinds of foods, including donuts, ice cream, cake and pizza, by counting calories and staying within their allotted calorie amounts for the day. Simple as that.

    Too much sugar for what?

I wouldn't eat like that; I'm not sure what kind of health benefits all that sugar and stuff would add, besides pure energy. Seems like a huge waste to me; calories that could be better spent on something delicious and full of nutrition.

But people will tell you its fine and that calories are all that matters, I'm sure.

Calories are indeed all that matter for weight loss.

For health and body composition, you want to pay attention to nutrients. Get enough protein and enough fat, eat a few servings of veggies every day, and forget about the rest.

You can lose weight eating the foods you enjoy, regardless of how much of any one particular macro- or micro-nutrient it may contain.

Set a reasonable calorie deficit, and stick to it. If results aren't as predicted, adjust calories as appropriate.

If you want to lose fat instead of muscle, get plenty of protein. Don't fear fat, you need it. Make sure you get your five a day fruit and veg. Stay hydrated.

Beyond that, the health benefits of eating or avoiding particular foods are marginal at best.

If 800 calories in donuts interferes with your overall micro/macro needs then yes it's too much. There's no need to remove foods you really like, that's just a disaster waiting to happen, include them and be mindful of your overall needs and goals.

You're going to get lots of different opinions - for the most part, it's all about calories. For example, yesterday I ate pizza and oreos and managed to stay under my calorie goal. May not have been the "healthiest" day, but I like to be able to enjoy foods that I love. ;-) Good luck!

Eh I recognize a lot of them that will tell all sorts of unsupported feel-good lies about having to avoid sugar, that fast food is toxic, etc. A bunch of people who will do their best to scare you away from foods you love that they don't approve of.

Let them go. Embrace food freedom.

It's all about moderation. I eat 2 donuts holes every morning and loose weight.

You can eat whatever you prefer, and still lose weight... so long as you stay within your calorie limits.

I'm not saying you should eat nothing but junk, but occasional donuts, pizza, burgers, candy and beer can be part of a healthy overall diet.

This calorie/macro breakdown is similar to what I started with! I easily lost 66 pounds and have kept it off for almost two years now. :-)

That's too little protein. Probably pretty good for fat. You want your protein intake to be around 1 gram per pound of lbm, or around 1.75-2 grams of protein per kg of body weight.

Treat fat and protein as minimum targets. Hit your calorie goal every day. Eat some veggies and maybe some fruit. Do resistance training 3-4 times a week. Enjoy becoming awesome.

The macro thing is a bit tricky. There are accepted percentages, but sometimes they don't work so well.

Better to set your protein so your target is 1g / lean body mass (for me that's 25%). Your fat target should be 30%, carbs whatever is leftover.

For protein and fat, take those targets as a min, not a max. You want to hit them. It's fine to go over, but you don't get bonus points for doing so. You can just let the carbs fall where they may.

Don't bother tracking your sugar. It isn't important (I'm assuming no diabetes, etc). You might want to track your fiber, depends on any digestive issues you may have. Tracking vitamins and micronutrients is difficult because so many database entries don't include that info, but you might find it interesting so long as you don't obsess over them.

Now following those rules, and sticking to your caloric needs, eat what you want. Easy, yes? And you can indeed fit donuts into this kind of diet.

Search for topics describing 'If It Fits Your Macros' for more info. And don't use my diary as an example. I'm usually under my protein macro - but I'm trying to change that :)
