    I say baby to anything female. We wouldn't get along OP.

    I also say Chief to all my buddies. Is that annoying?

    It could be a little demeaning if you said wassup Chief to me and then Tom walks in and you call him chief. What? I thought I was your Chief? =)

    I don't mind pet names in a relationship, but I dislike when strangers call me honey or baby - especially when they're young enough to be my child.

    My hubby and I use "baby" more than our real names and I love it!!! I don't really like anyone other than him calling me baby though.

    I don't really like being called ma'am but I appreciate the respect aspect of it.

    I dated a guy that called me this and I thought it was sweet...until I found out it was because he was "dating" so many women this is how he kept from calling them the wrong name...

    No matter how happy I am, I will still dislike the term 'baby'. I'm not a baby, I'm not your baby, so don't call me that.

    I really dislike Ma'am unless it's said with an American accent (by an Aussie it just sounds condescending).

    It's funny you threw in the exception of it being said with an American Accent. If you're ever in the southeastern US, you'll be called ma'am. And I assure you, no matter the age of the person saying it, it's almost never meant as condescending. I respond with "yes ma'am" to most women at least occasionally, regardless of age. I even call employees whom I supervise ma'am, even when they are 15 years younger than me. Had one tonight, that was only 22, ask me a question about how to do her job and my response was , "yes ma'am, that's exactly how you need to do it." She laughed and told me that where's she's from in NY, you didn't get called ma'am unless you were over 50 and even then it wasn't all the time.

    Here in Savannah, Georgia, if I don't say Ma'am and Sir, I'd be looking behind me for my Daddy to smack me in the back of the head. It is alright if the person asks you to call them by their first name. But here in the south, we would call them Mr. Jimmy or Miss Joanne.... never by their last name! That is considered so rude here in the south!

    I am 37 and I don't mind ma'am at all. I didn't even mind it in my 20s.

    I have noticed a lot of service people only use ma'am with women who present themselves nicely. I don't mean dressed up or necessarily professional but "proper" in a way. Women even at my age who are really slovenly, trashy, etc, just don't get ma'am as much in my observation - so to me it's not an insult.

    It is just a matter of habit with me, an automatic response. All guys get "sir" as well during a casual encounter. It is just a matter of politeness.

    And how does one go about obtaining a causal encounter with one such as yourself?

    You can call me sir.....or daddy......whatever you like.

    I call people petal all the time! I hate being called bab tho, which is quite common where i come from. Especially by men young enough to be my son!
